SOLVED. YA Fantasy Book, set in medieval times in a mountain town. Read in 2000’s, wasn’t a very old book. [s]

The witch of the town is able to “read” people when they’re a baby/toddler and see if they will be good or bad or whatever. The witch also makes dolls, I believe. Two children are read (I believe one is a boy and one is a girl) and the witch sees that either could take her place, but she insinuates one is really bad but she can’t tell. Or something. The town assumes the girl is bad and treats her terribly. However, the witch makes them both her apprentice.

I don’t remember the middle part of the book, but the end is the witch narrating as the town tries to stone the girl. I believe the boy tried or did SA the girl. The witch finally convinces all but one person in the town that the girl isn’t bad, and they decide not to stone her to death. Except the boy that tried to SA the girl, he’s still gonna stone her. The girls dad ends up killing him with the stone.
