Nina | 1 comments I read this when I was in middle school, it was in the children's section of the library, and it was before 2014. The only details I remember is that the girl is very afraid of everything, and this one scene where she was so hungry she found a tree with blue-dotted mangoes, ate one, and got very sick. When she came across another mango tree, she was very hesitant to try it before realizing it was normal and putting it in her bag. I THINK at the end, she flies on this giant creature and she finally goes home.

I ate a flour cake and brought out one of the five mangoes I’d picked from a wild mango tree along the way the day before. It was a small, strange-looking green one with blue splotches on the skin, but I figured a mango was a mango. I dug my nail into it and pulled the skin off. The flesh was a dull orange as opposed to the bright orange I was used to. Maybe it was a little overripe. I shrugged and took a bite.

The mango’s effect took about fifteen minutes to wear off. In that time, everything around me shrank to appear as if it could fit in my hands and then blew up to its normal size again; my legs grew long and lean, as if they were those of a woman, then they shrank back to normal; and I could have sworn I saw a large pink frog with gold speckles hop to my feet, humph arrogantly and then hop away. I would never eat a mango with blue splotches on it ever again!
