I really enjoyed this police procedural. I guessed Emma's situation early on (on the run from abusive boyfriend) but was drawn in to the search for her sister, her friendship with her neighbor, and her involvement in the murder investigation. The crime was sufficiently complex that I didn't guess where it was going. It's interesting that Detective Mathias Honeywell is cast as the lead since as much time is spent on Emma as on the investigation. I like the dynamic between Honeywell and his partner. The setup of potential interest between Honeywell and Emma is left on hold as Honeywell ends up on a date with her yoga teacher friend at the end. To be continued...

GailW (abbygg) | 532 comments I have finished the book, giving it 4 stars, and I am very pleased with it. l actually like it much more than Dashofy's original series. This one reads smarter, I think. I did have a hard time though trying to figure out if Honeywell or his partner was the lead of the partnership and then at some point thought, oh who cares.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments I enjoyed reading it too, also gave four stars.
Thanks for the recommendation Gail!
Carol, I also got quite invested in the Emma Anderson character who was the early focus of the book. The plotting made sense that we were introduced to the detectives later in the book. The dynamic between the partners was entertaining.

Until the end when the missing sister is obviously a hook for book two, I kept wondering when we were going to get more details on her disappearance. It made sense that Emma would keep a low profile while she searched.
I hated that Joe did not survive the rampage of Clay Bauer. He was kind to Emma and I still wonder why his daughter was so hostile.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9513 comments Yes, it became clear (I thought, although Book 2 blurb confirms it) that Emma would continue her search in the series. A couple of threads are left unresolved, It's interesting that a non-cop will play as prominent a part as the cops will in the next book. Kind of the Three Pines series and the Sr. Thomas Lynely series where we follow the lives of several characters, not all of the the PI or PD.

I like that.

Also, yes, he was a good friend to Emma and I hated to lose him. This being a small town and all it's hard to imagine we won't run into the daughter and her family in future books, but who knows. I'd like that mystery solved too.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments Carol,I like that too! Following the lives of several characters definitely adds to the Three Pines books. I've never read the Thomas Lynley books. I will be interested in how this next "Detective Honeywell" book goes. I would expect his partner Cassie to have an equally prominent role.

I really didn't think he was on a date with the yoga instructor I think she wanted it to be a date.

I also thought that Emma should be the lead in the series and not Honeywell. She was in the book more than he was. I was kind of rooting for him and Emma. I always look for the romance end or the future possible romance in stories.

I also gave it a 4 rating. Thank you Gail for the recommendation.

That is how Hoopla compare it with those other series. I can't remember if it had a preview of next book in series at the end. I haven't returned the hoopla ebook yet I can look but lately I haven't been reading any of the end previews etc at the end of books. It's good they will bring that part of the story into the next book.
But lately with books that are in series they always leave you hanging at the end. Some more than others. I mean the Tate james series I'm currently reading book #1 and 2 were both on hoopla audio from my library but not #3 & 4 but 4.5 is there. So I was so into the series had to buy #3 and was able to request 4 on Netgalley wasn't approved so I gave in and ended up buying #4. For some reason I've slowed down reading #3 I think listening to the audio was going alot better than having to do the ebook LOL. Had to be the first time I ended up buying a ebook for that reason. If I can't find a copy of the book two in this series will I end up buying it. Who knows.

I happened to have the Kindle version so went back to check. In the last chapter, when Matthias comes to visit...

"..Emma was tempted to give the man a hug but resisted. Yesterday, over lunch, her new friend Kira had swooned about him and the date they'd gone on last Saturday. And the second date coming up this weekend. Emma didn't want to muddy those waters. Friends were too hard to come by."

If Matthias isn't intending these to be dates he's sending mixed messages, lol. I'm guessing it won't go on for long, but to me it looks like dates for now!

I really enjoyed this! More than expected. I love mystery series that have an overall arc like Louise Penny's so this hit the spot as some have mentioned.

I am so glad someone mentioned the daughter/Joe situation as being unresolved, I too wanted to know what was up with that. She seemed so angry and I wanted to know why.

Kira worked my last nerve and I don't trust her. I want to see how her character plays out.

Definitely will read the next one!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments Christina - good to hear you liked book one. I am in the middle of book two now and it picks up where book one left off! (also very good)
