Read around 2008. A kid's grandpa (or other old relative) comes to live with his family. His mom puts zucchini in every recipe. The grandpa says something like "it's a good night for a murder," and then he takes the kid to smash up all the zucchini in the garden.

My first thought was The War with Grandpa, but it doesn't have the zucchini detail.

Did it seem like a newish book at the time you read it?
