Perhaps, we the reader are privy to his thoughts about vows etc, so we know there is more to his story. If we didn't have that background, we would see a wealthy business man with self-defence training.

I think she should have but was almost embarrassed to pursue it. McKenna knew his skills were levels beyond simple defense training. She was struggling with a lot of emotions when it came to him and ignored her instincts, or, at the very least, shoved them in the background.
