May 2024 Not First in a Series BOTM - Thunderhead, by Neal Shusterman

[Alaina]

Rowan has gone rogue, and has taken it upon himself to put the Scythedom through a trial by fire. Literally. In the year since Winter Conclave, he has gone off-grid, and has been striking out against corrupt scythes—not only in MidMerica, but across the entire continent. He is a dark folk hero now—“Scythe Lucifer”—a vigilante taking down corrupt scythes in flames.

Citra, now a junior scythe under Scythe Curie, sees the corruption and wants to help change it from the inside out, but is thwarted at every turn, and threatened by the “new order” scythes. Realizing she cannot do this alone—or even with the help of Scythe Curie and Faraday, she does the unthinkable, and risks being “deadish” so she can communicate with the Thunderhead—the only being on earth wise enough to solve the dire problems of a perfect world. But will it help solve those problems, or simply watch as perfection goes into decline?

It added a whole new level to this world! I wonder if Citra is going to end up asking him to be her apprentice or something... (hide spoiler)]

Poor girl, still being used like a pawn even though she is officially a scythe. Also, I'm surprised Faraday revealed himself to that woman in the library. Through part three (view spoiler)[It is the mark of a good series that this is invigorating after rereading it. I'm so excited for everything I'm anticipating, and everything I've forgotten. I love taking it as it comes, and I want to forget as much as I have for the next reread. (hide spoiler)]

Through part four (view spoiler)[I forgot how much everything comes at you all at once. Or maybe that's because I've been binge reading this. It's impossible to put down, even the second time.

At the same time, I know I can't finish this tonight. It's too intense, and as I recall, the ending is wild, though I'm conflating everything with The Toll. I can't allow myself to do that tonight. (hide spoiler)]

Through part five (view spoiler)[I like that this series does away with the traditional YA love triangle, and instead introduces characters like Munria to vie against Citra for valid reasons, like the scythedom. It's a welcome break from typical YA. (hide spoiler)]

Through chapter 44 (view spoiler)[There's a magic in the way I reread things, that I will never fully remember everything. I feel like being intentionally vague in my comments and reviews helps. I'm shocked by the same events while having more knowledge to anticipate the bloodbath to come. (hide spoiler)]

FINISHED!!! This ending, OMG, absolutely incredible. I can't even believe all that went down. Truly epic in scope. I'm certainly glad I didn't read these books as they were released, because I never could have waited after that finish. I'm starting the next book immediately!!!

[spoilers removed]"This is my first time reading this series and I have been absolutely blown away. The ending of this, like the last 100-pages, I loved it. So freaking good. I never in a million years could have predicted this ending. So impressive!
