The struggle for survival in the arena is a never ending cycle. Sometimes a tribute will luck into a boon but they are just as likely to be a victim of sabotage.

The Randomizer was let loose on all of the teams' resource supply piles. The Arena Masters are not heartless, the news isn't all bad. At least this time.

In Round 1, 1 pile receives a boon (15% page point increase), 2 are left alone, and 1 is the subject of sabotage (15% page point decrease). Impacts to resource supply piles are team specific.

Your team's randomizer results

Weapons: Left alone (protected by supply drop so left alone)
Shelter: 15% decrease (protected by supply drop so left alone)
Food: 15% increase
Defense: Left alone (protected by supply drop so left alone)

In case folks didn’t notice this since it looks like it is an edit of an older post. We’re looking for books starting with TON.

Aaaaaaand….. go!

——————
Tongues of Serpents - this is the 6th of a series I’ve been reading, and I just read book 5. It does give them a challenging ending to deal with, and they did say they’d like to “raise the fun flag.”
Tonight the Streets Are Ours
Tonight I'm Someone Else: Essays
Tony and Susan
Tone Deaf
Tonight You’re Dead

Lots more options.

message 409: by Insiyah (last edited Jun 15, 2024 07:47AM) (new)

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 609 comments Potentials for TON:

Tony's Wife (Romance)
Tony and Susan (Mystery)
Tony (Military Romance)
A Ton of Trouble (Cozy Mystery)
Tonight You’re Dead (Mystery)
Tonight We Rule the World (YA)
Tonight I Said Goodbye (Mystery)

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 609 comments Tonight I'm Someone Else looks really good - I'll read it if no one else wants to

I added that to my TBR when I found it. :) ELSE isn't a horrible ending to give them, is it? Better than ENTS.

Beth | 639 comments Hi Team, and welcome to Round 2! I can hardly believe we're a whole month into our challenge!

Wanted to share a few updates

-- We did amazing in Round 1 - second place by less than 300 points. Woo hoo! Quick analysis:
1. They had more people reading more of the BOM books
2. They got to post BOM DQs twice (that alone is worth 80 pts)
3. They read fewer books, but the books they read were longer on average
District 11: 275 books, 9013 total points, book length avg 328 pp
District 12: 286 books, 8658 total points, book length avg 302 pp

Not saying we need to do anything radically different; just letting y'all know how it shook out.

Stats for Round 1

-- The Round 1 tab in our internal spreadsheet has been locked and hidden so it's out of the way. You can still pull it up if you want to see it, but it can't be edited.

-- Any books that were on the R1 tab that weren't completed have been moved to the R2 tab. @Lisa, Dangerous Ground has also been moved over.

-- There were two books that couldn't be verified before the end of R1 so were not able to be counted. We can't count them toward R2 because they were definitely completed before the end of R1. ☹️

-- For R2 we may want to rethink the latest we can check in books so we don't "waste" any. Please share your thoughts on that.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to the captains if questions, suggestions for improvement, etc.

I wish you a joyful, book-filled weekend!

Tony looks like it would be pretty hard to match? Also the blue from A Ton of Trouble?

message 417: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 771 comments OK...After trailing their posts for a little bit. They are not trying to stick us with hard endings. They really seem to want to just go for a coin flip to see who wins the extra 5 pts at the end.

Given that we are in second place...I'd vote for a similar strategy. I'm in enough challenges where I have to read certain books, I'd hate for people to read something they don't think they will want to just to give them hard letters to start with.

message 418: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 771 comments Anyone know how often the moderators accept people into the backroom group? I asked to be added two days ago and nothing yet.

Thanks for this perspective, Lisa. You’re right—we should be choosing what we want to read.

message 420: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 699 comments Yes at first they really focused on the end letters and now have decided not to so I’m totally on board with doing the same!

message 421: by Beth (last edited Jun 15, 2024 01:05PM) (new)

Beth | 639 comments I’d vote for one of these

Tonight I'm Someone Else
Tonight You’re Dead
Tony and Susan
Tonight I Said Goodbye

They’d likely need ELSE and DEAD for the first two. With the second two, I’m sure they’d have no problem with SAN or BYE.

I’d be good to read any of these, and Insiyah has already said she’s also interested in reading the first one.

What say you?

message 422: by Jackie (last edited Jun 15, 2024 01:36PM) (new)

Jackie | 2149 comments None of those should be hard for D4 to find. I’d be willing to read Tonight I Said Goodbye if we want to go with that one.

message 423: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 699 comments What if, in the interest of turning over a new leaf for this round, we give D4 a choice between "Tonight I'm Someone Else" (Insiyah) and "Tonight I Said Goodbye" (Jackie)

message 424: by Beth (new)

Beth | 639 comments I like it, Amanda. Excellent idea! I'll present the options to them after some other folks have weighed in to confirm.

I applied to be a member again a couple of days ago so I could get more BOM points for the team and was accepted almost instantly.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Congrats team on second place! Thanks too Beth for moving my book. I will be back home tomorrow and should have more time to read now that vacation is done. 🙂

message 435: by Tammie (last edited Jun 16, 2024 08:02AM) (new)

Tammie Hi D12

We'll read a book for bye...since I'm reading for this one I have 2 choices for you like you gave us...just let us know which you'll take...🌻

Bye, Baby
BYE, I Quit

message 436: by Beth (new)

Beth | 639 comments Nice, Tammie, thanks!

@Jackie, thanks for offering to take this book. I'll suggest that everyone claim a book for battle week before anyone takes more than one.

Since D4 chose to go with BYE, our book to send them is the mystery Tonight I Said Goodbye. I'm happy to read it, but also happy to let someone else read if they'd like to.

message 437: by Beth (last edited Jun 16, 2024 08:37AM) (new)

Beth | 639 comments Bye, Baby - ABY - abyss, abysmal, Abyssinian are the words that come to mind

The Abyss Surrounds Us (Fantasy / SciFi)
The Abyss (Sci Fi / Thriller)
The Abyss Beyond Dreams (Sci Fi / Fantasy)
Abyss (Fantasy / Sci Fi)
Abysmal (MM Romance)
Abyssinian Chronicles (Historical Fiction)
The Abyssinian (Historical Fiction)
The Abyssinian Proof (Historical Mystery)
Abyssinian Nomad: An African woman's journey of love, loss, and adventure from Cape to Cairo (Travel / Nonfiction)
The Abyssinian: A Traveller to Henry's Court (I'm guessing Historical Fiction)

BYE, I Quit - UIT - nothing useful / QUIT - quit, quite are probably the easiest words to find books for

I'll suggest going with ABY since we have to use only 3 letters. If we want to use QUIT, I'll find some books to suggest.

I haven't checked availability on any of the books.

message 438: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten | 575 comments I am happy to read either Abysmal or Abyssinian Chronicles, if we want to give the other team a choice.

message 439: by Beth (new)

Beth | 639 comments Any other thoughts from folks?

message 440: by Insiyah (new)

Insiyah (insiyahxo) | 609 comments Kirsten wrote: "I am happy to read either Abysmal or Abyssinian Chronicles, if we want to give the other team a choice."

I think these both work and give D4 enough potential options.

message 441: by Beth (new)

Beth | 639 comments Agree! I’ll present them with the options.

message 442: by Beth (new)

Beth | 639 comments BTW, team, we're looking for someone to read Tonight I Said Goodbye. Jackie had offered, but she's already got one book for battle week.

Any takers?

message 443: by Tammie (new)

Tammie We’ve chosen Abysmal > we’ll read Malibu Rising

message 444: by Beth (new)

Still waiting on someone to read Abysmal and Tonight I Said Goodbye. So far we have Kirsten reading The Ants are my Friends and Amanda reading Arthur & George.

That’s great, Insiyah, thanks! Do you want to let D4 know in their thread?

Actually, Jackie is reading Ants, and Kirsten is reading Abysmal. Yes on Amanda with A&G. Just need someone for TISG. I started tracking in post 8 https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... 😉

I’ll read it if no one else takes it but at this point I’m going to wait till later to claim.

And thanks for the BOM updates!
