Melissa | 3779 comments description All About Book Games

🏹 Books must be at least 100 pages in length.
🏹 Only books started after the challenge start date can be used.
🏹 Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge.

Point System
🏹 Books less than 100 pages = 0 points
🏹 Books between 100 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
🏹 Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(points will be rounded up/down from 0.5 as per standard maths)

Category ideas
🏹 As you read, your books should be allocated to one of 4 categories. These are: weapons, defense, food and shelter. While we have given suggestions to help with where to place each book, we encourage creativity. If a book isn’t allocated a category, then it won’t receive any points.

These are suggestions. Trust your gut and don’t overthink placement.

🏹 Weapons
weapon on cover
grey or metallic colour on cover
weapon named in the book
letters of weapon in title
author or main character initials in weapons
features a character who is a blacksmith
battle in book

🏹 Shelter
shelter on cover (i.e. a building)
red, purple or pink on cover
a character you'd like to shelter with
shelter letters in title
author or main character initials in shelter
features a character who works in construction
finding / making shelter critical element in book

🏹 Food
food on cover
yellow, orange or white on cover
food or drink named in the book
food letters in title
author or main character initials in food
features a character who is a cook
cover is a "feast for your eyes"

🏹 Defense
defense on cover (i.e. a wall, a mountain or a river)
green, blue or brown on cover
books can be heaped into a wall to form a defense
defense letters in title
author or main character initials in defense
features a character who is a soldier/police officer/public defender
siege in book

BOM
BOM information located under spoiler. BOM are very important to get extra points! Please volunteer for DQ's (it's not scary I promise!) or participate in as many as you can!

(view spoiler)

May BOM: The Malevolent Seven- Official Page Count: 412
May BOM: Salt & Broom- Official Page Count: 282
June BOM: Starling House- Official Page Count 312
June BOM: The Wishing Game- Official Page Count 320
July BOM: The Familiar- Official Page Count 387
July BOM: The Book That Wouldn't Burn- Official Page Count 576
August BOM: Funny Story- Official Page Count 395

Hunger Game Buddy Reads

Informal buddy reads will be held for the original trilogy of the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. One informal buddy read for each month of the challenge.

Informal buddy reads means there will not be formal discussion questions as with our groups BOMs.

However, in order to earn the 20 points for participation, players need to post at least 3 posts that provide a reasonable contribution to the discussion of the book. You do not need to provide a school worthy book report, but the posts need to be more than "Katniss is awesome" or "I love this book" to count for participation points.

The Buddy Reads for each book will run as follows:

The Hunger Games: May 15th to June 15th - Official Page Count: 387
Catching Fire: June 15th to July 15th - Official Page Count: 439
Mockingjay: July 15th to August 15th - Official Page Count: 339

Team Resources:

🏹District 9 Tracking Spreadsheet -https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

This is our main way of logging books and keeping track of what we've read and what we need to complete rounds. Please fill out all the information you can, to make it easy for your captains to transfer things to our main sheet.

If you like to plan your books ahead of time, feel free to add as many as you like to the spreadsheet! If you only know what you're reading when you start, feel free to add as you go. Please keep the spreadsheet as up to date as you can! If you've changed your mind on a book, no big deal (we all have!), please remove from the spreadsheet so we know as we're moving along where we are at in the round.

If you don't like spreadsheets, that's fine too! Give this one a try (I've tried to make it as user friendly as possible!) and if not, please do a completion post here in our chat! We only ask that you include as much information as possible; there is no such thing as too much info when it comes to challenges!! 😆

🏹Cover Color: Tineye - https://labs.tineye.com/color/
Use this as a guide only. Common sense first! You can verify or double check yourself with Tineye. When in doubt ask!

🏹Word Count: ArBookFind - https://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.a...
Books with MPGs Childrens / Kids / Poetry / Play / Graphic Novel / Illustrated / Photography / Art (or which have "Illustrated" in the title or an "Illustrator" contributor in the metadata) must have at least 25,000 words (must be a verified count. sites that provide estimated word counts are not valid sources for verifying word count).

Melissa | 3779 comments description

Arena Battles

You have been matched with an opposition and will fight them twice (once in round 2 and once in round 3), switching who strikes first.

The fight will consist of parrying book titles back and forth, by matching the end of your opposing team's title with the start of your own. You can use or ignore articles at the start of the title. There must be an overlap of at least three letters.

Planning
To start the fight each pair will be spun a title by the Arena Masters. The first team must find a book with a title that overlaps by at least three letters, and declare their planned strike to their opposition team, who must then plan their riposte. Each team will plan out a maximum of 10 strikes each this way.
Books can be read in any language, but titles must be in English.

Note: planning must be completed within the first week, and you must NOT start reading any book until the second, fight, week.

Fighting
Once the fight phase starts each team simply reads their planned books!
There's no requirement to read them in the correct order, but if at the end of the week you have missed a planned strike then you will lose the battle, regardless of how many of the rest of the books you complete.

Points and Winning
Each team gets 5 bonus points for each completed strike
The winning team in each pair will get a further 5 bonus points
The winning team will be either:
- the team to make the last completed strike, if not all 20 books (across both teams) are read; or
- the team with the smallest number of overlap letters in their strikes, if all 20 books are read; or
- if there is a tie for number of overlap letters, a coin toss will be made by a neutral mod to decide the winner.

Melissa | 3779 comments Hi everyone and Welcome to District 9!!
If you weren't already aware, we are the grain district.

My name is Melissa or Melis and I'm happy to be a part of the team with you all! This is my (too many to count) team challenge and I'm always so excited to join in on them. I'm from the Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania, USA. I live in my home with my husband, 3 daughters (20, 19, and 1 years old(yes 1! 😜)), and our 3 cats. We've been getting some summer weather lately, so I'm extremely happy about that. It's my favorite season! ☀️ 😎

Please introduce yourself and provide a link to your challenge shelf. You can give us as little or as much information as you like. Feel free to answer all, some, or none of the questions below!

What was your last 5 🌟 book?
What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf?
Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it?
What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!)
What is your favorite season?
☀️❄️🌸🍁

Remember this is a game and the most important rule is to be respectful and have fun!!

Louise | 3330 comments Hi all. My name is Louise, I’m a little excited about this challenge and being in a team with you all. Like Melis I have taken part in a lot of team challenges over the years that it’s difficult to keep count.

I live in South Wales with my boyfriend and 2 dogs.
I’m an avid reader, although I’ve cut back a little in the last few months as RL pressures have arisen. I do enjoy a varied collection of genres and will go out of my way to find that elusive read for a challenge.

In response to Melis’ questions
What was your last 5 🌟 book? - I don’t give 5* out very often but Wildflower Hill warranted 5*. Set in Australia it tells the story of 2 women Emma and Beattie separated by decades but whose lives are forever intertwined.

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? My TBR is huge but I do need to get back to the Women’s murder club series

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? I have read The Hunger Games and thoroughly enjoyed them. They were 5* reads for me. I may have to do a reread. I also want to read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
I have watched the films but as with most films produced based on books they were dissatisfying.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) - it has to be lamb especially on a Sunday dinner

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁 - I love spring when new life begins

message 15: by maria helena (last edited May 06, 2024 03:50AM) (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 1924 comments Hi everyone. My name is maria helena, or MH for short. I’m from Sweden. Here is my shelf for the challenge:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I’ve participated in a lot of the NBRC team challenges, and have been captain a lot of times, but nowadays I enjoy focusing on just reading. This looks like it is going to be a lot of fun! I’m hoping it will help me get back into more consistent reading. I used to be an avid reader but ever since the pandemic, my reading habits haven’t been the same.

I read a bit of everything depending on my mood, but I have a special love for Nordic crime.

On to Melis’ questions:
- I rarely give 5 stars, but I just finished Hildur and it was close to 5 stars.
- My TBR shelf is out of control at the moment, so I have no idea what’s even on there anymore. I read a lot of series and have several that I’m hoping to catch up on during this challenge.
- I read the Hunger Games books and saw the films years ago and liked them.
- My favorite food is elk stew.
- I like all the seasons, for different reasons.

Trinia | 2503 comments Howdy y'all!
My Shelf
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

My name is Trinia (say it tree-nah , like Trina- lol)
I live in Texas with my husband and we are empty nesters with 3 grown men in their early 20's. I still feel 20, so it's weird for me! I work part time as an Occupational therapist/Hand therapist. And most importantly LOVE to read, mostly audiobooks but I do get some ARC's from NetGalley, so I juggle several "books".

Anyhow, I loved The Hunger Games series and look forward to revisiting it again. The movies were awesome as well, and maybe I can watch again with my hubs.

What was your last 5 🌟 book? The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty - she is a favorite author of mine, not her best but still better than the rest.
What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? I was lucky to get Jodi Picoult's upcoming release By Any Other Name but am a bit nervous about the topic, Shakespeare is not my strong suit.
Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? ~ YES and YES
What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) ~ Well, hubs is gluten free so I have to say Pasta! because we both miss it so much.
What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁 ~ Spring, summer is so hot here in Texas we literally bake.

I look forward to getting to know y'all more during this challenge. Some old friends and new ones. Been a rough year for us, we lost both of my husbands parents at 90 yrs old, have a son graduating college and all the other typical life stuffs.
Happy Monday friends!

message 17: by Nick (last edited May 06, 2024 06:36AM) (new)

Nick Vallina (MisterGhostReads) (mister_ghost) | 110 comments Hi all!
I'm Nick and here's my shelf

I'm a bit of a hermit spinster, in my early thirties, who loves his dog and reading.

What was your last 5 🌟 book? - The Hero of Ages

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? - I'm DEEPLY a mood reader so the concept of adhering to a TBR...but I'm really enjoying starting my Cosmere journey :D

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? - The Hunger Games is still one of my favorite book series and really helped me stick with reading through high school and college.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) - Indian food is my favorite type of cuisine but like..generally? Any type of pasta dish can get it.

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁 - I'm a fat boy so I like the fall when the weather is getting chillier.

I read a lot of books each month because, as a mood reader, I always have like six books going at any time. I'm looking forward to participating in this challenge!

message 18: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Hello everyone. My name is Natasha. I'm from southern New Jersey (hi Melissa from across the Delaware). I'm a cataloging librarian for my full time job and I also do nature photography on the side. I've been rather busy and haven't had as much time to read as I would like. Part of that is due to me being on my phone instead of reading, which I've been trying to work on. I feel better when I'm on my phone less.

Here's my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

What was your last 5 🌟 book?
My last 5 stars read was Silence: In the Age of Noise by Erling Kagge. 5 stars are very rare for me to give.

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf?
Mainly the older books that have been on there since 2015 and 2016. I have a very large tbr shelf (5,325) and having fewer on there will be nice.

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it?
I've read the first book. Maybe this can be a good impetus for me to finish the series.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!)
I'm not really sure I have a favorite food, but I do really enjoy spaghetti, ramen, ice cream, and Indian paneer.

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁
Fall

message 19: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 507 comments Hi District 9! I'm Samantha but I go by sam. I live in the Pacific Northwest in the US and think I'm finally at the point where I can't say, "I just welcomed my first baby into the family." (She is 15mo)

Link to my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

What was your last 5 🌟 book?
Technically it was Alice in Borderland, vol 8 but it's hard to rate graphic novels/manga so I'll go with the one before that which was Bookshops and Bonedust! I've been struggling with 5 stars this year but still have had lots of 4 stars.

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf?
I'm excited to read: Amari and the Night Brothers, The Will of the Many, and finally continuing on in the Greatcoats series.

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it?
Yes! I just did a re-read of the series this year after watching the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!)
Oof, this is a tough one. I go through a lot of phases with food but I think one that sticks with me always is hotpot. I love the aspect of sitting around with family and friends enjoying a meal, especially one that's interactive.

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁
Summer in the PNW but Spring everywhere else. It's too cold here in Spring but Summer everywhere else is too hot.

message 20: by Melissa (last edited May 06, 2024 09:04AM) (new)

Melissa | 3779 comments Welcome everyone! It's nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to getting to know you more.

@Louise - I agree the films didn't live up to the books but on their own I thought they were done very well.

@MH - I did the same last year and participated as a player and not a captain. It was nice to sit back and read without the added work of being a captain. I hope you enjoy this one!

@Trinia - I'm so sorry for your loss and congratulations on your son graduating. I enjoy Liane Moriarty's book as well.

@Nick - I can be a mood reader at times as well but 6 books at one time!! I would get so confused LOL

@Natasha - (Hi!!) I'm jealous of your job! I have the same problem with my phone but once I put it down I'm so grateful I did!

@Samantha - My little girl is 15 months too! I also enjoy having meals with family. I should do it more often for sure :)

The Mods just announced an informal Buddy Read of The Hunger Games throughout this challenge if anyone wants to read or reread them!

message 21: by Melissa (last edited May 06, 2024 09:05AM) (new)

Melissa | 3779 comments The spreadsheet is ready for books to be added. Please let me know if you're having trouble accessing it or if you have any questions.

message 22: by Melissa (last edited May 06, 2024 09:10AM) (new)

Melissa | 3779 comments I should answer my own questions LOL

What was your last 5 🌟 book? - My last one that wasn't a reread was The Witch of Tin Mountain, which was also a BOM for NBRC recently.

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? - So many to choose from but not nearly as many as some of you!! Probably The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer. I really enjoyed The Wishing Game.

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? Yes and Yes. I'm definitely going to participate in the Buddy Read as it's been so long since I've read the books.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) - I am also GF and I do miss some good pasta but I'm also DF and miss pizza the most! One of my favorite dinners is chicken cutlets.

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁 - I also enjoy them all for different reasons but summer is my favorite with fall coming in a close second!

Trisha | 156 comments Hello District 9!

I'm excited to start this challenge! BUT . . .the challenge starts on my bday, so I will probably be quiet that day but should be able to check in daily after that!

I'm currently finishing up a certification in medical billing with my big test taking place during the challenge, so my usual level of books has dipped these last few months while I prepped for this test but should pick up after.

I read Hunger Games quite a while ago and loved it. I am excited to start!

Nick Vallina (MisterGhostReads) (mister_ghost) | 110 comments @Melissa - they're all different genres! That's how I handle the flip-flop of it all. I've got a horror, a queer romance, some lit fic, some high fantasy, some weird morbid non fiction and a short story collection or two haha.

Its crazy, I know :P

maria helena (mariahel) | 1924 comments I usually go back and forth between two or three books - one audio and one paperback and/or ebook.

message 29: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann | 941 comments Hi everyone! I am currently on vacation in Amsterdam. I had a busy day today visiting the Van Gogh Museum. We had an excellent tour guide . He looked just like Van Gogh , red beard and all.

My shelf is : https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I am from Colorado. I have 2 grown daughters and a Hubby. I also have two wonderful grandkids . I watch my grandkids 2 times a week. They are a joy.

The last 5 star book I read was The Women. I love reading Mysteries, Science Fiction , Horror and Historical Fiction, I usually don’t like romance but I have been known to read one for a challenge and like it.

I have watched and read the Hunger Game books, may have to watch them again.

My favorite food is avocado . When my husband and I go out to eat he can usually tell what I am ordering. If it has avocado in it… I am in.

I will be back to Colorado on Wednesday and I will try and catch up on all the messages then….

It is nice to see so many familiar faces! Looking forward to meeting the rest of you.

message 30: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments @Nick - I've started reading Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere books. I'm really enjoying them so far. I've read The Final Empire and The Way of Kings so far. I'm currently reading Words of Radiance.

message 31: by JL (new)

JL Roberts (jlroberts) | 76 comments Hello fellow District 9ers! I'm Jillian but JL is fine. I'm from Michigan where I live with my husband and our two sons and two dogs. I work as an administrative assistant 4 days a week. I enjoy reading (obviously) and usually juggle around 2-3 books at a time, puzzles (like actual Jigsaw puzzles, and going to concerts with my husband. We had kids pretty early and now that they are old enough to take care of their selves, we are finding ourselves doing more and more just us. Kinda recapturing our 20's in our 40's.

What was your last 5 🌟 book?
Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick. I'm usually strictly a romance kinda girl with some suspense and mystery sprinkled in, and never read non-fiction but, I needed a blue cover for UNO, and this worked. I listened to the audio version that she narrated herself and I loved it! But I usually love anything Kendrick is in so....

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf?
The next Mercedes Thompson book in the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs by drops in June so I've been excited for that.

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it?
Yes and Yes.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!)
I love Mexican food.

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁
Fall is my favorite season hands down, as I love a big comfy hoodies and jeans over anything else, but as I live right next to lake Michigan, I love the summer when I can go to the beach and lay in the sun with a good book.

Stacey (boydsmom) | 1377 comments Hi everyone! Sorry I'm a little late to the party, I was traveling all day.

I'm Stacey. I'm a PT in North Carolina. Tower Teams was my gateway challenge, so I still like to come back to NBRC for a challenge or two a year. I'm primarily a romance girlie, but will read just about anything for a challenge. I usually have a physical book, a kindle book and an audiobook going at any given time.

My shelf: games2024

What was your last 5 🌟 book? I was a delayed finisher of the Throne of Glass series, but just finished Kingdom of Ash and cried my way through the last 50%.

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? I'm hoping to get to The Will of the Many, When the Moon Hatched and finish the duology with The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? I've read and watched. Loved the first of both and then gradually like the rest less. I'm up for a reread though.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) I'm going to go broad and say desert. :)

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁 Spring -- Mostly because it just gets too hot in summer here, and I love watching all the leaves come back on the trees.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

@Nick - Kudos to you! I've only ever read read 2 at the same time and they have to be different genres as well. Usually it's a physical book and a ebook when I do.

@JL - It's very difficult for me to listen to audio books but I've found listening to books where the author narrates is easiest. If you haven't listened to Yes Please I recommend it. It was so funny with Amy being the narrator.

@Stacey - I reread Throne of Glass for the end of Uno and am saving them for this challenge. I figure they will come in handy for sure.

Louise | 3330 comments Happy Tuesday everyone I’m finally back from a long weekend away playing pirates in Brixham. We actually arrived back yesterday but spent the afternoon in A & E as my boyfriend fell on Saturday and broke his elbow 🤦‍♀️

Glad to see lots of familiar faces here as well as new ones.

Loving all the book suggestions my TBR is growing.
Definitely going to be re-reading The Hunger Games as part of the buddy read.

Before I forget my shelf Book Games 24

Christina T (crysteena73) | 182 comments Hi all I'm ChristinaT from Iowa. I work the overnight at one of our local casinos so my online times are all over the place. I have been reading MM Romances for the last 2 years so I tend not to participate in many Book of the Month offerings.
What was your last 5 🌟 book? Everything for You by Chloe Liese

What book are you excited to read from your TBR shelf? I'm a mood reader so all of them..... none of them 🤷‍♀️

Have you read/watched the Hunger Games? Did you enjoy it? I have not read them but did watch the trilogy. I enjoyed them a lot. One day I'll get them read as well.

What is your favorite food? (Since we are the grain district!) I love Asian food. Chinese, Korean BBQ, Thai, Sushi... yum

What is your favorite season? ☀️❄️🌸🍁
Autumn is my favorite season. I love hoodie weather so much. Also I think the trees look their best in gold and orange.

maria helena (mariahel) | 1924 comments I’m always a bit hesitant to reread books, especially if it’s a book I really liked and it’s a long time since I read it. I worry I will like it less and it will ruin the memory I had of the book.

Leslie Ann | 941 comments I am back from my trip… whew 13 hours on a plane!!
@maria Helena - i really don’t like rereading books . I hate knowing what comes next. I am going to try to reread the Hunger games series

@Louise —- pirates that sounds fun, hope your boyfriend heals quickly… ouch

@ Stacey… I forgot about the Throne of Glass series… I need to continue on with it. I think I am on 5 or 6

@JL … I love the Mercy Thompson series, I need to catch up so I can read the new one

@ Nick I need to reaquaint myself with the Mistborn series, I am on book three

LOL…. There seems to be a pattern here. I start a series but never finish…. Thanks guys for reminding me of these series…

Looking forward to playing… Think I will start Hunger games first. I usually have 3 books going at the same time and switch back and forth and the whooosh all of sudden finish them.. Lol

Melissa | 3779 comments That happened to me when I reread The Henna Artist. It wasn't what I remembered and I was disappointed it ruined the magic of it.

I think that happens too when it's been years since you've read a book because you change and so does what you like to read.
