Hier, vlak bij de grens wordt veel gesmokkeld. De grensbewaking is fors uitgebreid en de spanningen nemen behoorlijk toe. Centraal in het verhaal staat een kruidenierswinkel aan het Oosterdiep (W.Z. 222). De kruidenier wordt door een klant gedwongen smokkelwaar te verbergen, terwijl boven de winkel enkele wachtmeesters van de marechaussee zijn gehuisvest. Door het verhaal heen speelt een voorzichtig opbloeiende liefdesrelatie tussen de kruidenier en het meisje Trijntje (de hoofdpersoon uit het eerste boek van de auteur: "Peper aan boord").
