Just finished Malevolent Seven (still need to answer the questions though - my normal MO of reading the book knowing their are DQ but failing to do it as I go along carries on) and about to start Salt and Broom (will I have learnt my lesson and changed my ways?). Glad to hear it is more humourous than some.

Lucy - thanks for letting us know.

Cat - Mel has given a more thorough answer than I would! If you're struggling with links in the SS then feel free to put all 3 in a post in this thread and we can move them.

Steam train was good. Think the kids liked the balloon animals most. My sister got very into trying to do tricks with a spinning plate.

Mine is still not cooperating, Lucy! I’ve been trying to add shelves all day— even manually putting shelf names in and nothing will work!

message 406: by Marty (last edited May 26, 2024 08:11AM) (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I finished Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher . While it's not the absolute best adaptation of Jane Eyre I've read, it is a charming one. I'll answer the questions in a bit.

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Urgh GR with its periodic glitches is so frustrating. Fingers crossed it decides to play nicely again soon.

Malevolent 7 I enjoyed. It wasn't as dark as a lot of grimdark fantasy and was able to poke fun at the tropes of the genre which I appreciated.

Yay Marty - another person who doesn't manage the questions at the right time.

The first mini is released; more details can be found here.

Key details are that books finished between 1st and 15th June 9am UTC can be used. 5 different people can all read the same book for a task if we want.

Each task can be repeated a maximum of five times. Each food item in text can be repeated once.

This mini challenge runs from June 1st to June 15 9am UTC

Logo Design by FlamingText.com
- Read a book with a orange cover
- "harvest" (plural OK, no other variants) in text
- Author initials in HERACLES
- Word in title is hiding a different smaller word (of at least four letters) inside it (not the singular form or verb tense differences) - examples LimonCELLO; THINg; wereWOLF (or indeed WEREwolf); HUNGer but NOT GAMEs (as that's the singular/plural)
- One of the following food words in text (plural OK, no other variants): corn, grape, ham, bread, cheese, apple, fish, chicken, bread, rice, tomato, pepper, salt, honey, lobster

Logo Design by FlamingText.com
- Horn on cover (instrument or animal equally OK. but not antlers please)
- Book set in Crete
- Book set in Idaho
- Author's name has a diacritic (Cornucopia was a concert tour for Björk. yes, it's tenuous, but go with it anyway!)
- "abundant" or "abundance" in text
- Takes place on a farm (farm meaning somewhere raising plants or animals to be sold for food)

Logo Design by FlamingText.com
- Title (including subtitle) includes all the letters CORNUPIA (no need to duplicate C and O)
- The cover has at least 3 different food items
- Set in Peru, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela (or combination of them to reach the 50%)

There will be a mini tab up on the SS soon. Initially we'd suggest that people only reserve 5 mini tasks and that we start with the 5 point tasks as much as possible.

Melindam | 8291 comments Started reading "Niccoló Rising" yesterday and currently at 25%, I find it an easier read than I did "The Game of Kings" which was a ride-or-die experience. On the other hand I haven't been able to connect to any of the characters so far, but it may change. :)

message 412: by Teddie (last edited May 26, 2024 08:44AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments MINI tab is up on the planning sheet! Like Sophie said, please try to grab at least 1 five point and/or 1 three point task to start. Column I is where you can indicate other MINI tasks your book works for - please put the task number in front of the why in this column.

Also, if you see a little black triangle in the corner of a task cell, hovering over that gives more info about the task.

Go Entwives! :)

Oh Niccolo! So many twists and things to try to figure out. You'll probably manage to finish the series before me despite me having 3 left. I enjoy them but need to be in the right frame of mind to concentrate on every detail (and still be flabbergasted about where they end up).

There is also a R1-MINI tab next to the Round 1 tab on the planning sheet where you can claim tasks.

With some of these trickier tasks, this post will consolidate all our suggestions, so please post to the team thread if you find a good Crete book, or a piquant orange covered book, or a book with CORNUPIA in the title. Some team members could do a team buddy read for tasks!

CORNUPIA
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer Parallel Worlds A Journey through Creation, Higher Dimensions, and the Future of the Cosmos by Michio Kaku

3 Foods on the Cover
Wednesday’s Child by Yiyun Li

Set in Peru, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela (or combo of +50%)
The Tailor of Panama by John le Carré Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons The Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen

Melindam | 8291 comments For takes place on a farm, I would recommend Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. Or The Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen

The Writers' Retreat or Runaway Writers (same book, different title) is set approx 50% in India and 50% in Crete as far as I remember.

The Tailor of Panama is my choice for set in Panama.

Melindam | 8291 comments Love in the Time of Cholera is set in Colombia, so this gives me a push to finally try and read it or One Hundred Years of Solitude.

FYI I am just adding the autofill info to the mini tab. Please just enter the code at the start of the row on the mini tab to column O on the main books tab for the round and everything will track across nicely when I'm done.

message 424: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Can we use the same book in the regular tab and the mini-tab, or will all the mini-task books be separate?

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
If you put a book on the regular tab, you can add the resources as normal. Then if it works for one of the mini tasks, add the mini code (column b on the mini) to column O on the main tab and it'll all be copied across automatically.

Basically all books for minis should also be used for the main part of the challenge.

Just tried to add my latest book and it's still not behaving! I've put it on the spreadsheet as in progress so I can mark it as finished when I can add it again.

Ooo, new mini! Wednesday’s Child is a good one to read for three foods on the cover (I see three different fruits). I just finished it so no chance of me reading it unfortunately.

Melindam | 8291 comments Found a kindle freebie Me and the Cute Catastrophe with an Idaho setting. It's only 158 pages, so I'll manage even if it turns out to be not my thing. (Actually, it sounds terrible, but I can take 150 pages for the team. 🤭)

They just have to be finished after 9 UTC on 1st June so books you are reading now could count.

message 433: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 271 comments Do you think Summer at the Comfort Food Café (Comfort Food Cafe #1) by Debbie Johnson will count for three food items? Ice cream, strawberry and wafer.

Cecily Black | 1805 comments Gray After Dark by Noelle W. Ihli

These were some Idaho setting books that were recommended to me if anyone wants to check them out

message 439: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm excited for the mini! I finally finished two books - putting them in the SS right after this. I feel bad with my reading this past week - I've been quite sick ever since I got home. I just went to the doctor for the third time and got two huge antibiotic shots to add to my oral antibiotics - so I should feel a lot better soon!

message 440: by Teddie (last edited May 26, 2024 06:29PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments

You don't need to enter books manually to the R1-MINI tab.

Just enter your books normally on the on the regular Round tab. If the book works for one of the mini tasks, add the mini code (column B on the mini) to column O on the regular Round tab and all your book info will load on the MINI tab automatically.

(If you've already added books manually to the MINI tab, we've updated those so no worries.)

message 446: by Melindam (last edited May 26, 2024 11:54PM) (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments I can claim some more "Author's name has a diacritic" tasks as most Hungarian authors' have those in their names, but will wait a bit.

However, I can also recommend some books by author Magda Szabó with the excellent English translations by Len Rix. I have read a few and they are outstanding.

Coming of age, historical fiction, 2nd ww (one of my favourite books as a teen) - Abigail
Magic realism, human relationships and drama, 2nd ww and afterwards - Katalin Street
human relationships and drama (it was made into a movie starring Helen Mirren) - The Door
historical fiction, human relationships - The Fawn
