Melindam | 8288 comments I am listening to "A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking" (and definitely recommend it for those of you who like cosy-fantasy & baking :) and thinking to myself that I have a new favourite inanimate, yet very much alive and kicking character in Bob, the Sourdough-Starter with a Personality. If I should ever get attacked, I'd like It to defend me. :D

He reminds me of The Luggage in Discworld, which is a nice association to have. :)

mockingjay promotional poster for district 7 with a below knee amputee sitting with a wooden leg on his lap next to a pile of wood and an axe

We're into the last few days before Book Games kicks off!

Couple of quick housekeeping bits that can be found on the 1st page of comments for reference.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/... we are predominantly going to be using the tracking sheet. If you can't use it for whatever reason, please let us know and tracking posts here can be copied over to the sheet.

The options given in the rules as reasons why a book might work for a particular category are not set in stone, so use your imagination and judgment when it comes to reasons. If you aren't sure, just ask!

It's the first time this challenge has been run so we are all learning together. Hopefully with patience and coming at communication as if everyone is trying their best, we can make this a really great one.

Melindam | 8288 comments I got Red Alder

"Native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, the red alder is a deciduous tree used by Indigenous peoples for a variety of purposes, including medicine and dye. As an important forest tree, it grows quickly and aids in the restoration of disturbed land. Much like the red alder, you are a quiet observer. You think before you speak and often ponder life’s profound questions. Your friends know they can depend on you for support and that you will remain a reassuring presence in their lives."

I've know got Californian Redwoods joining the vines and weeping willows in my personal forest!

Also known as the coast redwood, this species includes the tallest known tree in the world. Many redwoods exceed 300 feet in height, and the longest-lived are estimated to be more than 2,000 years old. The trees occupy a narrow stretch of land from northern California into southern Oregon, where dense coastal fog provides necessary moisture. Just as a redwood rises above other trees, you are a leader among your friends. You carefully consider decisions, make good choices from the start, and stick with them. People admire your strength and rely on you for it.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I got FIG tree...figures since fig is a fruit/food. lol

Native to the Middle East and western Asia, the common fig is a giving tree;its fruit has been harvested since ancient times. Your friends and family consider you to be a generous person as well. Whether a neighbor needs to borrow a tool from your garage or a friend asks you for a ride, you're always there to lend a helping hand. You prefer to keep busy anyway, as you have numerous hobbies and actively volunteer to help others.

Enjoy him as much as you can!!!! I lost my mother in 2008 and my father in 2012 and I miss them ALL the time!!!! But I was blessed enough for them to have lived until 81 and 89 respectively. We definitely do! My Mum died on 21st May 9 years ago when she was 58 which has made me all to aware of how little time you can have them for. Bought home 2 summers ago when my FiL and grandmother died within a week of each other.

The kids adore him and there were cries of grandad and many hugs as soon as they saw him. Need to keep that going as long as they'll allow!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I am really excited to start this one! It should be fun, especially since we have such a wonderful, communicative team. I sometimes can't get on for a day or two if I am watching my grandchildren, but I will be on most every day but maybe not a bunch of times of day.

Yesterday was too fun and special. I have 3 daughters and 2 sons, but only my girls live here locally. I live in the central valley CA, one son lives in So-Cal and the other lives in Oregon, both about 345 miles from me but in opposite directions. Anyway, yesterday morning two of my adult granddaughters made brunch for me and their mother (my daughter, Heather). Fantastic cooks! Scrambled eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, salad with homemade dressing, and a delicious croissant/berry dish fresh out of the oven!!! Yummy!!

Then I went to my other daughter, Becky's house and 5 of her 6 children were there. One of her daughters lives in Southern California (SoCal) so she couldn't be there, but we had a delicious BBQ: carne asada, chicken, corn and potatoes but I skipped dessert since I'd already had the croissant berry dish earlier. Then we played Taboo, adults against the kids. OMG! The kids went crazy trying to get each other to guess their words. lol The I got one word that NOBODY knew, not even my daughter. Nobody had ever heard of the word colander. Guess that dates me? lol But we laughed, cried tears, belly aching laughs! Too fun. Gotta love big families! This week I'll be going out with my other daughter, Kim for breakfast or lunch or something. Sometimes we all get together and other times we split it up like this year, but both are fun.

I told you all about my grandkids and greats, etc. but never mentioned my nieces and nephews. LOL I won't bore you BUT I did just find out that I am getting another GREAT nephew in October, due on one of my daughter's birthdays. :)

Melindam | 8288 comments Seems like you had a great time, Vicky. :)

And yes, I have a son who turned 10 in April.

He's helping our Marauding Monsters Team (Sophie and I are part of it) by finding & reading some books for tasks and he enjoys it very much. :)

He had known for some time that I am a reading challenge addict and this March he asked me if I could register him on GR and if he could participate in a challenge with me. :)

I am exercising strict monitoring on his GR page, but he enjoys entering the books he has read so far.... and of course spinning the monster wheels. :)))

That's so lovely that he joins in with the reading challenges! (Also I can definitely understand the appeal of the monster wheels :D )

15th is definitely looking a lot closer now, I must finish the books I'm in the middle of (apart from Dracula since that won't finish until November).

message 224: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Lucy,

We used to read books together, of course and still do, but he was rather unwilling to read by/to himself. The Monsters reading challenge has been a blessing in this respect as well. Now he's motivated to read some books alone already. :))

Vicki, that sounds like the best weekend! Love playing games like that with family.

My husband still isn't over when we played Articulate (similar to Taboo) with my then housemates and the phrase 'what's cooler than a freezer' was the hint for a fridge and was answered within seconds. He thought we were all daft.

Mel - He is an awesome addition to our team and I'm glad he's enjoying reading more on his own as a result. Will have to keep it in mind as a tactic in a few years.

Teddie - if she gets to spin the wheel it adds to the excitement!

I am the Apple tree (Malus domestica)

Standing at heights ranging from six to 15 feet, apple trees have been cultivated for thousands of years due to the bounty of fruit they produce. Similarly, your friends describe you as generous and giving. Whenever someone's birthday approaches, you’re always the first to offer them a thoughtful gift. You do well with change and adjust to your surroundings.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I’m baaaack! Seems like we had some wonderful Mother’s Day celebrations out there! We had a lovely weekend at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. We go there often, but had never gone to see the fireworks. They had some awesome kamaaina (local) rates, so we decided to do an unprecedented 3-day-weekend stay!

They have a fireworks show every Friday night, so we went straight from work. We were able to watch the show right from our lanai! The property is so large and varied, we never feel the need to leave at all.

We swam in the pools, went to the beach, shopped, watched a hula performance, listened to some Hawaiian music, had some great food & sweet treats, enjoyed some cocktails & went dancing! Now we need a vacation after the staycation!

It’s back to work tomorrow - ugh! Next Saturday we’re going to a different hotel for a fundraiser for a local women’s & children’s hospital. They’re having 3 live bands that play 70’s, 80’s & 90’s music, dinner & a silent auction. One of the bands used to play at the nightclub where my husband & I first met way back in the early 80’s!! (Told you I was old!)

We normally don’t do stuff like this. We just sit at home & read / play on our phones & tablets & watch TV. Too much fun!

Everybody getting excited? We've got a great start on our planning sheet. As we are going to learn more about how we need to distribute our books across our 4 resource types, please continue to fill in info that applies to weapons / defense / food / shelter - then we can figure out as a team how we want to assign everything.

A couple notes about the planning sheet:
There are notes in cells I2 - I5 regarding suggestions for each of the 4 resources - just hover over the cells to see the info. It's ok to be creative and have fun with these: if you can justify the reason a book fits in a category, it will probably be ok. If you have questions or want a second opinion, post to the team thread and we can learn as a team :)

You'll never need to colorize anything - based on whether you enter a read date or where you enter info, the cells will self-color.

If you are planning to participate in BOMs, whether the formal monthly BOMs or the informal trilogy BOMs, go ahead and enter which books you'll be reading in the BOM tab. Here's the first Buddy Read on Hunger Games.

COUNTDOWN TO START: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Melindam | 8288 comments Very excited. ❤️‍🔥🤗

The challenge will start 11am my time, so plenty of time to start listening to The Malevolent Seven and come up with DQs for Day 1 on 16 May.

message 243: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments I'm excited and I did start one of my books but I will be done by the time we start so I will replace it with my next book. QUESTION
what does this mean exactly?
books can be heaped into a wall to form a defense....

message 244: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments So the idea there is, let's say you have books on the cover of your book: you could be a book mason and make a book wall for defense. :) Have fun with these and MacGyver your books!

12 hours and 10 mins to go! Nearly there.

I'm not setting a good example as my plans to finish things off before the challenge have fallen apart in light of the new job. 2 of them have a out 20% left so will probably just get those done. One has more like 50% and I may well just put it on hold for a few months now.

Redwoods are showing up next to the limes and vines in my forest too.

I think I'll start with this one, a pretty obvious choice for Weapons: The Kid by Ron Hansen . I have a Kindle edition of it.

message 249: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I’m planning on leading with The Pursuit — lots of weapons possibilities potentional there! I literally have dozens of murder mysteries on deck with yet more weapons potential. Also lots of FOOD!
I’m saving Murder and Mamon for this weekend — all brain candy!

I also failed in finishing my current reads by go time, but I have less than 100 pages in one & the other is #6 in the Nancy Drew series, so quick & easy! Can’t wait to get started!

The Pursuit (Fox and O'Hare, #5) by Janet Evanovich Murder and Mamon (Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mystery, #4) by Mia P. Manansala
