Can imagine the amount of digging and chewing on the leaves they'd be tempted to do.

Our neighbour's cats love to use our pots as a litter tray which is ok for some of them, but less so for the vegetables the kids have planted.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments My mom was the green thumb of the family. I remember when we first got this place, her plants were the first thing to be moved into.

I used to come here to study for my exams, lots of quiet. So. She made me talk to them, so they wouldn't feel abandoned.

Me? I am known for letting succulent and cactus die. Seriously. I had a cactus that I killed. Mom told me I gave it too much water. Now with cats.. yeah, plants are not something we have anymore. I do miss have some green around. But have yet to find something that lasts enough.

Sounds like my mum. She could keep anything alive - even had a windowsill full of orchids that flowered year after year. Shame that it isn't an inherited skill.

Sometimes the best approach is to hope there is a green space outside you can get into! Or I've just been given lego plants that look good and are low maintenance.

message 154: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I have an abundance of orchids in our house, somehow we managed to find the ideal place for them because they are more or less continuously in bloom and thriving.

As for the garden, we have a spacioys one with walnut and apricot trees and big bushes. My husband is the self-appointed gardener (I am not much of a green-fingered person) and he's very enthusiastic when it comes to adding more plants, less so when it comes to weeding. All in all our garden has this healthily neglected appearance, so bees love us. But we are standing out among the gardens around us that get manicured within the inch of their lives. ;)

We don't have outside spaces... only option would be the kitchen...

Wait lego plants? Like plants made of lego? That could work LOL

I've got the orchid and the succulents so far.

MelM - that sounds like the best type of garden to have. Fill it with lots of plants to hide the weeds amongst them and keep the bees and butterflies coming.

message 157: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments Bees, butterflies and 2 nests of blackbirds. :)

I need those in my life!!!!

Stephanie | 286 comments So I want to say that I have a moderate green thumb. I don’t really kill plants but I can’t keep fussy plants. My husband does not want me to get into the house plant hobby. For my yard I live so close to Lake Michigan the the soil is so sandy so I got to put in more energy and time then I have to make most things grow.

message 160: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Lake Michigan doesn't even have the advantage of being warm and dry so succulents and things can be left to their own devices.

BOM etc updates

June BOM - the voting for this finishes in about 12 hours so please go and have your say: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/3...

July BOM nominations are open until 20th May so have a think about what you'd like to read and make suggestions.

The general Adult book thread is here.

The Theme is Time Flies When You're Having Fun and the thread is here.

May BOM relevant to the challenge are The Malevolent Seven (starting 16th May) and Salt & Broom (25th May).

Any BOM reading and answering of 3 lots of questions gets the team a bonus 20 points, with 40 extra points if you are selected to write the questions.

There is also the Hunger Games Buddy Read. If you make 3 reasonable contributions (beyond Katniss is awesome, wow that would suck types of thing) then we also get 20 points.

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Same as Cecily - Bagheera would destroy an indoor plant. I have had good luck with outdoor plants though. I grow catnip for him and I've had iris and peonies work out before. I may get a Meyer lemon tree in a pot for my new place, since I'll miss the one that's in my current back yard.

message 163: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm just starting with houseplants and enjoying them! I bought one of those common orchids and it has been spectacular. we keep joking that it must be fake.

We are off to the airport! I'll check in on the 19th or 20th with some finished books.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Plants? If I get anywhere near a live plant, it will wither and die immediately! I used to work at a preschool and parents would give us plants all the time - - even beautiful orchids. I would just say thank you and take them home & give them to my neighbor wear they would live a long, happy life! Far away from me. Sad, I know. My Mom used to raise the most beautiful plants, in and outside. I do arrange cut flowers beautifully & my lei are outstanding! Guess I’m better with the no-longer-alive plants!

Melindam | 8288 comments Talking about trees... 🌲🌳🌴

Found this fun little "what kind of tree are you?" stuff on the link below, based on Celtic "tree-astrology" and birth months.

I am a bit on the fence about astrology, nevertheless I always have fun with contemplating it.

https://onetreeplanted.org/pages/what...

So, do you think the description based on your birth-month, fits you? Or is it very wide off the mark? 🙂

message 171: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments Mine is a bit of a mix. I got Hazel - The Knower.
I am good at school but not math and science lol
Memory is a bit shitty too but that could be a medication side effect lol

I am a virgo which seems to relate to me a little more in description but not something I pay much attention to.

message 172: by Melindam (last edited May 09, 2024 11:38PM) (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments I got Holly, the "ruler", which is as fitting as my Leo sign: not at all, when it comes to me being a "leader" and "regal", lol.

"you take on challenges easily", "you are competitive & ambitious" is only true for reading challenges. 🤭

I hope the "kind and affectionate" is true, though. ☺️

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
I got Vine which I'm not convinced by at all. Indecisive and liking to go places I can show off my charm and elegance don't fit. I'll take the being empathetic and seeing both sides though.

Cecily - I'm a September Virgo so close in the year to you for a birthday!

message 174: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I think mine was spot-on! I got Ivy - the Survivor. That’s totally me all over! 5-time cancer survivor, clinical depression, traitorous family members- - - you name it, it’s happened or is about to! I refuse to give in or be victimized!
I don’t believe the soft spoken or silent suffering parts, though! I will speak up and bitch long and hard. If you keep things bottled up, you will eventually explode (or implode)!

Melindam, wherever did you find this stuff? I’ve never heard of it before! Pretty cool!

Melindam | 8288 comments Lauri,

RESPECT for staying strong!! ♡

I think I came across it in Pinterest first, some time ago and saved under ideas for possible book challenges. :)

And District 7 and trees prompted me to remember it. :)

message 176: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments I got Adler and it does not describe me at all. I am not confident sometimes I can fake it till I make and people do not want to hang out with me. The only thing I agree with is being "very focused and dislike wasting time. They are motivated by action and results".

-Lauri I love that you are so strong

message 177: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good Morning Guys, I got the Knower and I can see some of myself in the description.

message 178: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Funny, my husband stumbled across something similar a few weeks ago. In the one Mel sent, I'm a birch, the achiever, but in the other one, I'm an elm, which seems to resonate a bit more closely. My husband thought it was hilarious how close the statement "tends not to forgive mistakes, cheerful, likes to lead but not to obey," rings true - lol.

Maybe we are all just forests, and plant different trees at different points in our lives when we need them :)

This is so true. I love how you phrased it. I always feel we have somewhat different personalities at different stages in life and also with different people in our lives.

message 183: by Marty (last edited May 10, 2024 10:24AM) (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Vine sorta describes me but kinda not. I'm not so much indecisive as I am a procrastinator. The worst thing you can do is give me a deadline far in the future. I like the idea of us all being forests.

ETA - I'm a lime tree according to Teddie's link. Doesn't really fit, but I'm down with being a forest of lime trees and vines.

I'm a forest of vines and weeping willows! lots of long tendrils going on.

I miss the weeping willow my grandparents had in their garden - was great fun to hide underneath as a kid.

I'm loving the people as forests with different trees for different stages.

I agree with it being too much! A lot of happened all at once. My therapist told me long ago that just one of these life events could have snapped a person. I'm just extremely fortunate...

We're about 4 days from the start now so time to start finishing off those pre-challenge books as only books started after the start time can count for points.

Does anyone know what they are starting on 15th?

message 192: by Melindam (last edited May 11, 2024 10:22AM) (new)

Melindam | 8288 comments As always before challenges, I have been getting restless for it to start. :)

Currently I am listening to a book I absolutely enjoy (A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking) and reading another on kindle which I find irritatingly dumb (The Dark Palazzo), but thankfully it's a short one.

I am planning to start with The Malevolent Seven BOM and A Court of Wings and Ruin. I will also start reading Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman in batches, as I guess it isn't something that you finish in one reading. :)

message 193: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I had a lovely lunch yesterday with 9 friends of mine, and afterwards we went to one of the lady's homes and had dessert. Most of us are mothers with an exception or two.

In California it's almost like having 2 Mother's Days because we have a large Hispanic community and the Mexican families celebrate it on May 10, which was yesterday. Tomorrow is the regular one for the U.S., so I'm looking forward to going to one of my daughter's home where two of my adult granddaughters are making brunch for all of us. It'll be so fun to visit and be catered to! lol

Happy Mother's Day to all of you mothers, dog mothers, cat mothers, and so on. :) I say if you're a mother in any way that Mother's Day is everyday! :)

I am pretty sure I'm going to start with Family Family by Laurie Frankel

Sounds like you've got a wonderful long weekend with yesterday's lunch and tomorrow's plans.

I'm having my dad over tomorrow for a barbeque. Normally we end up going to him, so I'm pretty sure I've overcatered to compensate!

It's been between 20-25 deg C for the last few days which is good enough! Unfortunately next week it dips a bit again and gets rainy.

Melindam | 8288 comments Same in HU, lovely, sunny weather with a bit of a breeze, but not too hot. :)

message 199: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments We had some amazing Northern Lights last night and to carry into the weekend. I, unfortunately, fell asleep early so I didn't see anything and now we have some wildfires so it's just smoky.

My mother is on the other side of the country and I was never able to have children so I will probably just talk to my mom on the phone.

No idea what I am going to start with but I have been reading about a book a day since the end of April so it will just depend on what I have next on my TBR when the 15th comes.

message 200: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments Helllllooooo I am found! I am excited as this is my first challenge on Goodreads and I have a pile of books to read. My name is Catherine, some people call me Cat. I work for Delta Airlines in the U.S. and am lucky to travel quite a bit. I missed the mini challenge but I am ready to start reading and logging on 5/15/24.
