Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Thanks Suzanne!

Yes, we can have 1 District and 1 Arena Hazard (spellout) active at a time. We have to finish all the tasks or letters in an active "spin" before we can spin for a new district or new spellout.

So right now District 9 is active:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

and the Arena Hazard spellout URBAN TUNNELS

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

We can read and bank books for other / future spin tasks/letters, but need to finish any current active ones before we can move on.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Teddie, so I finished a book today for D3G Set in Korea. Does that mean if those two above were not finished that my book won't count? Do I need to find another to cover Set in Korea?

message 1603: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Vicki, it'll still count for set in Korea if we end up spinning District 3 - we can finish books before the "spin". But we can't spin until all the books for our current district are finished. No worries though, since we can "bank" books - it'll be used for future spins if it's needed for a prompt.

message 1604: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Exactly! Your book will still count when we get to District 3, but sometimes we'll ask the team to read a certain book first to finish an active district or spellout.

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Hey all, I decided to go out of town today. I've been listening to Eruption The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens by Steve Olson and am just about finished with it. It can be used instead of An Easy Death (Gunnie Rose, #1) by Charlaine Harris for this hazard round.

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments And finished.

message 1608: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments We have added all books to the list of where they can be used. So any books completed 8/1/24 and after can be used to the best options. Especially the choices there is only 1-2 available :)

message 1609: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments How did you like Eruption, Marty?

I listened to it for the 2nd round mini and really liked it.

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Melindam wrote: "How did you like Eruption, Marty?

I liked it enough to give it four stars. I did think that he spent far too much time on the Weyerhaus family and business, as well as the history of the rangers and the conservation movement. I was looking forward to knowing more about the people impacted the most by the eruption. I think he did a nice job with that, but if it's a book about Mount St. Helens, it needs to be mostly ABOUT Mount St. Helens.

message 1611: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments lol I also gave it 4 stars, but I liked those aspects best that you did not so much. ;) I guess it's b/c I'm not from the US and didn't know anything about rangers, lumberjacks and the conversation movement. I found it all very interesting. :)

message 1612: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Captains,

I'm reading a book that works for brown cover or green text on cover but it also works for #9 in series as a back-up option. Will be done with it in an hour or 2.

message 1613: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'll knock off The Governess Affair (Brothers Sinister, #0.5) by Courtney Milan this morning. We used it in Uno for Yellow cover so if it counts for that, great! But it certainly counts for other things too.

message 1614: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments I am done with my back-up book, it is "The Case of the Stuttering Bishop". On the ss.

Oh it absolutely was great information. As you say, I'm just over familiar with it and therefore it was a bit much for me. The geology info was great. I still would have preferred to have less of the 'sidebars' and more about the main event. One reviewer said they thought he was asked by his publisher to add 'filler' resulting in the loooooong description of the Weyerhaus family business and the Conservation movement. I don't think I believe that - I'm married to a historian and they do love their tangential historic details!

YAY! We turned in our first Arena Hazard (spellout) and got our new spellout:
Poisonous Fog

Let's check our banked books that aren't covering trickier upcoming district tasks and see what we have to do.

For our District 9 tasks: let's give Lauri a few hours to wake up in Hawaii then decide about any substitutions we may decide to make.

Off to a good start everyone!

message 1617: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Hey Teddie, Stephanie or Sophie, I had added Zig Zag by José Carlos Somoza on the chart for an AHZ. It isn't listed anymore. Should I add it again?

message 1618: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments For Poisonous Fog - books I've finished:
Funny Story works for F - its potential mini-tasks aren't too hard to cover. I'll stick it in for F.

A Woman Named Damaris works for O (author LN). It does cover some lifestock/farm/yellow writing on cover mini tasks. And series #4. But I'd think "O" could be equally useful - so up to you captains!

I see what happened - someone accidently filtered a column - its still there!

message 1620: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments I'll be adding another short U-title book for our new word.

message 1621: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I finished The Governess Affair (Brothers Sinister, #0.5) by Courtney Milan which can cover our yellow book if needed. Putting it in the spreadsheet now, and will add all the things it works for.

message 1622: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8289 comments Yellow cover is also needed for District 5, so even if Lauri finishes hers later, it can still be used.

message 1623: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Yup! And I'd be so surprised if every book doesn't fit multiple prompts/letters.

I'm reading Torch (Unbreakable Bonds, #3) by Jocelynn Drake in the Unbreakables series which can cover another U as and when needed.

message 1627: by Vicki (last edited Aug 03, 2024 12:58PM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Where are the banked books to be found? At one point my books had been listed by Catherine (?) under the R3 Mini INFO tab under District Book Options, but now there's only 1 book listed but a lot of others for other people. I still am not clear on when I can or can't read my book I signed up for. So, I read White Chrysanthemum which was set in Korea but I think I read it too soon. I didn't realize I had to wait. But I don't know where to find it IF and WHEN it's actually posted for a task. I'm sorry but I want to contribute, obviously, but I'm not sure when my books can be read.

We have a new spell out and I added a book for G in FOG. I see others have posted books read on Aug. 1 so obviously I can read that one. I still am not sure when I can read for thee other tasks or even if my books are still planned/claimed or been removed.

I hope I am explaining myself and I'm clear. I am definitely not complaining if something doesn't get used. Like if someone else reads a G book before I read mine, I am OK with theirs being used instead. I just want to know if mine (in this case my G book) isn't being used where it went to. lol

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
So my understanding of where the banked books are (sorry will be back from holiday on Monday evening and then switched back into stuff properly) is that they are everything marked as read on our tracking sheet but not moved across to the official sheet. If you can see it up there, then we know where it is and can shuffle things as and when needed.

White Chrysanthemum is still on there and ready to be slotted in as soon as we spin district 3.

Please read everything you signed up for/want to read! It'll probably all end up slotted in somewhere. Anything that you finish after Aug 1 can be used.

Yes, the July Backroom BOM and Mockingjay are good for extra points, in addition to the regular BOM, Funny Story.

You're doing great! Marking which district tasks your books work for in column P is how we'll figure out assigned books every time we get a new group of district tasks.

When we get a new district, we'll officially assign a book to a task, using that column P as a guide. We'll also make sure everyone assigned can read their books in a couple days (if they haven't been read already.)

It might be awkward the first couple times, but it will smooth out :)

I'd like to hear from Vicki and Lauri before we assign books - are you two ok with reading The Book That Wouldn't Burn over the next few days? If not, we can swap in something else.

A WOOD in title
The Book That Wouldn't Burn - Lauri
The Book That Wouldn't Burn - Vicki

Lauri & Vicki: The Book That Wouldn't Burn

I was thinking of saving Sophie's The Thief Taker for the letter Q, but we can find another q if we spin a word with one.

I did finish Paris is Always a Good Idea yesterday. Good for a P in spellout. I’m almost done with Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice. Just started working in The Grave's a Fine and Private Place. You all are so FAST! If someone else wants to grab anything, please go ahead….
