Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I finished The Familiar last night & just marked it off on the spreadsheet. Please find my comments in msgs. 157, 175, 178, 193 & 203. If someone can get us credit for DQs, pretty please??

Thank you!

Melindam | 8291 comments Olympics - I'm mostly interested in swimming, waterpolo, fencing, kayak/canoe, as these are the sports Hungary is traditionally strong in, but I can't say I am spending sleepless nights over any of them. :)

I will go through my planned books and see what they would work for.

Just to double check

- donkey on cover could work for D10?
- fire both on cover/in title - is it acceptable for D12 as in fire "needs"coal? (or same goes for our own district, wood needed for fire?)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments I have been all over the swimming and artistic gymnastics! Of course I am cheering for Canada but I'm a huge Simone Biles fan and enjoyed watching her crush it!

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments @Cat - sorry, I misread your question -- like Sophie said, any books that aren't being used for the current active district or spellout are banked for future use, so as long as a book is finished after the start of the mini, it can be used for the mini.

Hope you and the family are having fun in Corfu!

- Yes, according to our AI overlords:
Donkeys are considered livestock in Western countries. Livestock are farm animals, excluding poultry, that are commonly raised or used on farms. Other examples of livestock include cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, and horses.
Fun fact: donkeys are often used to guard other livestock
- For the D12 coal on cover/in title: I would say wood can be used to make coal. Re: fire needing coal, I think might depend on how the fire is depicted on the cover? Like, a torch is probably no, but a burning house (could form coal) or a mountain (mine coal,) - maybe helmet with light, or pickaxe - things used to mine coal. Perhaps a canary? Same goes for D7 wood / fire: here, probably a wider acceptability for fire types.

Melindam | 8291 comments Thank you, for the explanation, Teddie.

My fire book is connected to magic/a type of personality.

Jeweled Fire (Elemental Blessings, #3) by Sharon Shinn

Like Katniss, the girl on the cover is "on fire". :)

Otherwise I will list options for plot that would fit several districts, as trading luxury and other goods (like textiles) plays an important part as well as politics and communication. There is also a central market that's important to the plot and livestock and other stuff is bought and sold.

message 1558: by Melindam (last edited Jul 31, 2024 07:35AM) (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments I also added a book that would work for the Russia setting, Mrs Harris Goes to Moscow.

If you like old-fashioned, feel-good books then I would absolutely recommend the stories Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris & Mrs Harris Goes to New York. A lovely film was made from book 1, although with an altered plot. :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments If no one else has claimed D12G Set in Russia (50%+), I will re-read Between Shades of Grey set in Russia. I read it in 2015 but it's worth a re-read unless I find a book that interests me also set in Russia. But you can put me down for that one, please.

I'll also claim D4G Set in Australia

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments I want you all to know. THIS CHALLENGE!!!! I have read on average 10 more books a month since starting. I had to change my end of year challenge goal since I blew past my original goal. No its at a real challenge goal. But yes you have all made me read more books and possibly books a few books I wouldn't have picked up otherwise. Good and bad...Smiles all around

Me too! I've been powering through so many ebooks I bought years ago. Now this new mini is definitely going to push it.

My first challenge I woefully underestimated what a Team challenge would do to my reading level! Think I sign up with 4 books a month and read about 15.

Awe, thank you, Sophie. :) You are also adopted into my family and are welcome with open arms!

Today Juju (4) got a "CREEPER" shirt and was SO excited! lol He said, "I want to wear that now." And every shirt I showed him he'd say, "I want to wear that one." lol But those of you who have younger children probably know what Creeper refers to but I don't have any idea. It was so cute because yesterday Lily saw it when we were shopping for her clothes and said, "Look, Grandma! Juju would love this Creeper shirt! Can we get it for him?" So, since I wanted to take him to get his own clothes, I had them put it on hold so I could get it today and Lily was right...he was so excited! lol

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Catherine, I will also claim D3G - set in Korea (North or South) (50%+) and read White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht.

message 1573: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I've added the set of books I'm pretty sure I'll get done before end of challenge. I didn't claim anything specifically, because who knows what we'll be filling. But I did write all the tasks they work for. I can write the letters they'd work for was well - let me know if you want me to :) Just trying to prepare for when we are out of contact.

I'll also have the three I claimed for round one finished tomorrow morning - they are all waiting to end :) One of them is driving me crazy not reading the last bit!

It's lovely that they know each other well enough to point out clothes and gifts for the others. My son is Minecraft obsessed - he's got Minecraft pants, socks, t-shirts and jumpers. Only thing missing for a full outfit is trousers! Most days he's wearing something with Minecraft, Pokémon or dragons.

Another couple of hours and those books can be finished! Nearly there.

Holiday is full of activity. Hoping we've tired the smalls out a bit so far so we can have a little more rest, but we'll see. Weather is finally playing ball and consistently high 20s which def helps the holiday vibes as we're still in the UK.

Suzanne | 5417 comments Captains, are you ok with my not claiming specific things, just trying to find books useful for a variety of tasks? Lol - I've started worrying I'm doing it wrong. nvm - after looking at the spreadsheet, I think I'm fine. I swear - I should never ask things first thing in the morning!

But one thing I did right is finished my books just now for round 1. :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments My 4 year old grandson has just recently gotten into Minecraft and Roblox. Prior to that he was 100% into nothing but the CARS characters, especially Lightening McQueen. lol I found out Creeper is a Minecraft thing too.

Sophie, Juju hasn't gotten into Pokémon yet, but he knows his dragons for sure! I got him 2 dragon shirts and he knows which type they are. lol These kids are too darn smart!

message 1590: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm fine with banking them (of course) but I did finish 2 books yesterday - one that covers "E" and one that works for tasks D or H (yellow writing or grain related in plot- they buy a sack of wheat to make flour/bread). Just in case they are needed as backups.

message 1591: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments TGIF!!

How is everyone doing with their first spin MINI books?

If you don't think you will finish the books you've claimed for this first spin by tonight or Saturday morning, please post here - we may be able to use a banked book or someone else can read today and we can get a new spin for either/both district and spellout to start tomorrow. Your books will still be used - just maybe not for this first spin. We want to try to get as many spins (or district repeats) in before the end of the mini to try to leave as few banked books on the table as possible.

I want to make sure though: does anyone think we should repeat District 9?

My personal vote on a D9 repeat is no: grain on cover / plot not the easiest, and 9 a high series #.

message 1592: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments No on D9, please. :)

message 1593: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm ok with repeating D9, but it's kind of more fun to do a district tour first :) I put my finished potential backups for this round above.

message 1597: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Teddie, I am not sure which books refer to the first spin. I signed up for quite a few books, but I didn’t realize that we had to have all of those read within a couple of days.

message 1598: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Vicki - I'm pretty sure what Teddie was referring to is the books from round 1. We want to finish each round as quickly as we can so we can go to the next round and get more points/use more books.

I think for Round 1 the ones you are signed up for are "Taking Shots" (already done) and "Same as it Ever Was"

message 1599: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Thank you, Suzanne. I read one of those books so I will go ahead and read the other one today. I appreciate your response.
