There's a fair number of martial arts going on - judo at the moment and I think taekwondo and possibly wrestling later. Can't remember if surfing is yet but skateboarding, BMX and breakdancing are!

I thought it was pretty cool too - the boat procession down (up?) the Seine interspersed with the performances - très formidable!

We've finished our battle books - great job all!
And now, onto our final MINI: BEATING THE ARENA
All the Arena MINI details are here but the long and short of it: we'll be spinning District and Word wheels to accomplish tasks and read for letters. One book to one task / letter. And thankfully, we can bank books for upcoming spins.
Take a few minutes to read through the MINI details and ask and questions you have. We'll decide as a team about upcoming spins.
Our first spins:
District Wheel
District 9: grains:
HUSK in title
yellow colour cover (50%+)
#9 in series
yellow text on cover
item related to district on the cover
author first & last initials in GRAIN PULSES
set in Pakistan (50%+)
plot element that can be linked to the district
Hazard Wheel
Word: urban tunnels
The R3 Mini tabs will be on our planning sheet soon - I'll post when ready.

I have a Pride and Prejudice retelling book that's set in Pakistan which I'll be happy to reread... and of course starts with a U, sooo.. Captains I'll put the burden on your shoulders to decide where to use it. ;)

The mini tabs are now on our planning sheet. As always, use those as reference but enter the mini info against your book in the Round 3 tab.
**PLEASE: when you put in an alternative district task for your book, please put "Dnumber" (so D7 for district 7, DC for Capitol) in the Alternative column (column P) so we can use our handy district option finder when we spin for new districts.
The R3mini-Districts tab has all the district tasks listed on the right for reference. you can use the dropdown at the top of column L to highlight the task types, i.e. letters in title, setting, etc.
We will need to do a bit of coordinating to complete each of these spins, so please keep an eye on the thread :)

I can read The Husky and his White Cat Shizun for the 'husk' task.

Anyway, just putting it out here that I don't mind how Cappies use/move my books if playing tetris is needed. :)

Just a quick FYI: for those "in title" tasks: those are just those 4 letters in the title vs the word intact in the title - PHEW! :)

Thanks Mel! Go ahead and throw that other U against one of the U's in our urban tunnel - I think we should keep Unmarriageable against the Pakistan task. :)

Yes ma'am! Books can be started anytime of challenge but must be finished after the mini start. There's a countdown to mini start at the top of Col O on the Round 3 tab, and on the Summary tab.

Yes!
Just got an answer on this: as long as you've read the book during the challenge and answer the BOM questions during that time frame, your answers count toward the BOM. If you think there's anything in your answer that is spoilerish, just stick it in spoiler tags.

No worries, I just thought it would be a very easy one to get done if it is intact in the title already! But Catherine's got it covered.

I didn't mean to imply you shouldn't read that - I just wanted to clarify for everyone that it was about letters vs the word intact.
Thanks for grabbing another task! :)

Just about to say this! I've read it and enjoyed it, and I've got a library book suitable for another task anyway.

OK good deal, I am gonna read that book anyways and its shorter :) I signed up for the yearly challenge and my birth year for this coming month is JANUARY :) and its a good J choice for me

We can start the mini challenge books as long as we wait until the clock is 0 to completely finish, even if that's like 10%?
And once this challenge starts how long until the next spin, do we know?

I know we have to wait to finish our book until the mini starts, so when is the start date?
UPDATE: I couldn't resist. I see others have their names on the spell out 2 or 3 times, so I went ahead and added my T book anyway. As others have said, if need be for the cap/co-caps to move my books it's all good! I would appreciate knowing though just so I know it didn't get inadvertently dumped or I didn't screw up (more likely!).

Countdown says 2 days 13 hours and 26 minutes

Thank you, I didn't see that countdown. lol I'm in good shape then! :)

yes indeed!
So if you want to find/start books for some of the trickier tasks, have at it!
We can spin for a new district or word as soon as we've read for all the tasks/letters in our current district/word. So I'm thinking if we can plan and finish all these first spin books on Aug. 1 (or 2nd if we need) we can spin and plan for our next district/word right away.
Another option is that we try to find books for all the district tasks on the wheel and try to spin for a complete set. That way we can get the trickier books chosen and maybe read early and just bank them until needed.
You can have as little as 1 page left at the deadline and we are happy for it to count.

With this wheel in particular, I was wondering whether The Vine Witch would work for grains on the cover (at the bottom) or whether it needs to be a little more, like a field of wheat.

I don't hate this idea. Might help those who can't commit to reading a book in a few days-week. They can plan the books and start reading.
Can we tentatively add each hazard and district to the worksheet and move around as needed?
I think grain is good.
Then for coal mining if we can find a coal fire, a lump of coal, a miner maybe.
Trying to think of I've seen books with a nuclear symbol or some way of depicting a bunker

I was thinking about that - actually started setting up the district tracking sheet for that - but it looks like we can only do 10 districts total. I think if everyone puts the D7 or D12 in that alternates column, we can do some quasi planning. Hmm, I'm going to set up a district pre-plan sheet, see whether that's helpful.

You could copy the mini info tab and add all the letters to the bottom. We could put our name in Column E. Add columns in-between the hazards for our initials there
We can redo each district as often as we like so if there's one we have loads of books banked for, we could do it 3 times before moving on. On the other hand if we just scrape through a district and it gets repeated 2 spins later, we can chose to move straight along to somewhere else.
For the spell outs when we finish one spell out we can choose to either keep repeating it or spin the wheel and see where it lands.

How to fill in Banked (Alternates) book info on the Round 3 tab:
When you enter the other district tasks your books works for in column P, you can just enter D+district #+task type letter.
So, D2A is District 2 task: letters in title. (Quick reference: Hover over P2 to see the task type letters in note.) Don't bother entering the Why it works in Col P - once that book is assigned to a district task via Col N, you can enter the why.
When we look at the R3 mini INFO tab we can see how many books hit a certain task by the number in column E.
For the spellouts, let's just take those as they come the way you're doing now, by entering the AH number on the Round 3 tab. If you want to bank a book with Z or Q, just enter AHZ or AHQ in the BANK column (Col P.)
As it seems we can do as many Districts as we want, we should talk about repeating a district with tasks we like, maybe a D1 or D2 for the series #, or something.
This might look a little confusing, but once you do a book or two, it should be easy. Please ask / suggest away though!

At least, that is plan A. But...my health is still not great so ??? I was in the ER Saturday and have several appointments this week, so I may be here, linking all my books myself, and super grouchy :/

Sorry to hear about your health, Suzanne. I hope you're well on the mend now.
