Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm about 30% through my Horror book, and barring something really crazy I'll finish today or tomorrow morning.

message 1202: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 271 comments I'm going to get my computer (and internet) back tomorrow morning so should be able to update the spreadsheet. I've read a few things but can't see MPG due to app.

message 1203: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Sounds good Lucy! The GR app is just so useless for anything other than the basic looking up of a book - I felt that pain last week :{

message 1204: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments It looks like several of my books that I had for the shelter tab have been replaced. I only have ONE book now to read for the shelter, correct? I always worry that when someone moves my books and doesn't let me know then I think I might've messed up somewhere. One thing I wouldn't do is plan on a book and not do it without letting my team know. I am having issues with my computer (looks like we have to get a new one) so I am borrowing one to post my books now. I still have 2 days unless I am wrong. It appears that I only had my nature book, so I THINK I am finished for the mini. Please let me know if that's incorrect and I am missing something. IF anything else goes wrong, I will message the captain again.

message 1205: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I just finished my last Wall 2 book. Murder on the Ballarat Train (Phryne Fisher, #3) by Kerry Greenwood . I do love the Phyrne Fisher series. Thanks to those of you who took over my other spots. I had good intentions to get them done, I swear!

message 1206: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments @Vicki - I'm not a captain, but I see several books on the shelter tab that you read - and it looks like you finished all the books you said you would. Yay!

message 1207: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Hey Vicki - It looks like 3 of your mini books were swapped out yesterday, but I'm sure it had ZERO to do with thinking you weren't going to finish in time, and more to do with someone wanting to be helpful and swap in already-read books for mini tasks. You are correct in that there is still a little over a day and a half to finish books for Round 2.

Planning for our next Book Battle will be coming up soon, so get ready for that! :)

message 1208: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Yay, excited about the new battle.

Sorry Vicki - that was me. As I said here I get a bit twitchy towards the end of the round so where there were replacements available and I couldn't see that books were being read either on the SS or on people's GR pages, it felt safer to me to replace them. It's no comment on you as an individual, but I knew that I wouldn't have time to play captain tetris over the weekend and unfortunately have been burnt by other people before. Overabundance of caution on my part, badly communicated so I apologise again.

message 1210: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments This time round District 9 will choose the first book, right?

message 1211: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Yep! The starting words have been announced in the captains group so now we wait on them.

If we can let Lucy, Marty, Ushashi and Lauri have a chance to pick a book early on as they didn't get much of a chance last round, I think that would be a good thing. If they don't want the pressure of having to read something within the week, then that's absolutely fine too.

message 1212: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments I'm happy to wait or step in, whichever's best for the team. :)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Right now there is a Thirst battle over in D1 between Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba - both very worthy contenders. If you want to vote for Hemsworth, head over! :)

Or Idris Elba... There's a split between your captains this round.

I'm READY! Thanks, Teddie. I have NO problem with my books being removed/replaced at all. I just wanted to make sure that's what happened. With my brain, I was not positive and thought I was missing something. LOL (If you've worked with me enough, you'll know what I mean!)

No worries, Sophie. You have nothing to apologize for! I am 100% okay with my books being replaced. I just didn't know if they had been since I wasn't told in a post. I will always get my reading done but if something comes up, I will always let a captain know or post it in the thread. I don't want you to feel bad. No hard feelings at all. I just screw up so often that I knew I would have felt AWFUL if I had missed something and my books (that I couldn't find on the shelter tab) had cost us points! That's why I kind of freaked out. No problem that they had been replaced. :)

message 1219: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I will participate in the battle round 3 if needed. If others who didn't get to read during the 1st battle want to, I'll wait until they pick. I am open to reading anything.

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Thanks Vicki! I expect planning for the next book battle will start tomorrow - we'll see whether we get a book from District 9. Lucy, Marty, Ushashi and Lauri can initially weigh in as to whether they have a book that works and we'll go from there :)

message 1221: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Sounds good! GOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM!

I'm finishing up Big Jack later this evening.

@Lauri - you good to finish Network Effect before the end of the round?

And are you all ready for the next round of

message 1223: by Ushashi (new)

Ushashi (ushashib) | 567 comments I'd love to pick up a book for the battle this time round, provided I get something from my library that matches the words. But I'm a good position to finish a book in a week my schedule-wise. I'll check this thread more often over the next week.

Yup! I’ll finish tonite or tomorrow for sure. Love me some Murderbot! Oh, the snark!

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Sophie wrote: "Or Idris Elba... There's a split between your captains this round."

Idris gets my vote.

message 1226: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I can try to find a book that matches the words. Same as Ushashi, it needs to be one I can get from my library.

message 1227: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments I won't be able to finish any more books for this round, unfortunately, moved my current/planned reads to Round 3 tab.

message 1228: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments For the battle books we do need to pick them quickly so if you are wanting to do them I need to know as soon as possible so please watch the chat. The longest I can reasonably wait is 12 hours in the beginning.

message 1229: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Lauri, Murderbot is wonderful. :D

message 1230: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I just finished my last book for this round. I'll do the same as Melinda and move the rest to Round 3.

Leslie Ann | 941 comments We have decided to start with

Arsenic and Adobo

message 1233: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments shots fired! I am not having any luck so far

message 1234: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments So… we need a book that starts with OBO, correct? Any other options?

message 1235: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Ouch - wow. I'm seeing Oboe but that seems like it will start a painful spiral.

I'm not even seeing any real contenders using the whole word adobo. Maybe someone else will see something.

message 1236: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments Do boys..
Do bosses...

message 1237: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments So most likely is dobo is most likely the people who did not read the first time will get first pick.

message 1238: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 271 comments If An doesn't count towards the words, I can read An Obol for the Ferryman by Ivan Kent (on app so can't link anything). it's relatively short and on KU. I may look when I get home and see if there is anything else on my shelves I could read instead though.

message 1239: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I can read Oboe Obituary if we need. But I did get a chance to read last time, so of course those who didn't have priority.

message 1240: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I concede defeat! Not even Oboe Obituary is an available title here. Go for it, y’all!

message 1241: by Marty (last edited Jul 14, 2024 09:10PM) (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments The only books I'm seeing for any of those options are martial arts handbooks and cookbooks. Not in my wheelhouse.

I've asked the librarians to add it, because despite being on KU it isn't on GR.

message 1243: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 271 comments Thanks Sophie. I've got it on KU now so it's all ready to start in a week. There were also a lot of teach yourself oboe books but they're definitely a very niche area!

message 1244: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments I let the other team know so Lucy will be leading us in to battle.

message 1245: by Melindam (new)

The struggle for survival in the arena is a never ending cycle. Sometimes a tribute will luck into a boon but they are just as likely to be a victim of sabotage.

The Randomizer was let loose on all of the teams' resource supply piles. The Arena Masters are not heartless, the news isn't all bad. But the Arena is just a wee bit harder as we get closer to crowning a Champion.

In Round 2, 1 pile receives a boon (15% page point increase), 1 is left alone, and 2 are the subject of sabotage (10% or 15% page point decrease). Impacts to resource supply piles are team specific.

Your team's randomizer results

Weapons: 15% decrease
Shelter: Left Alone
Food: 10% decrease (protected, no change)
Defense: 15% increase (protected, no change)

A few updates as we head into our final round:

The Supply Sabotage hit our weapons pile, which thankfully we had shorted compared to our food and shelter piles, so not a big loss there wrt book points - phew!

We're down a little in overall reading compared to June, but with summer vacations, totally understandable - please enjoy any and all vacations!!! Cecily, hope you are having fun in NYC :)

There are 4 opportunities for BOMs this round:

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
The Familiar BOM discussion here

The Book That Wouldn’t Burn (The Library Trilogy, #1) by Mark Lawrence
TBTWB BOM discussion here

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins
Mockingjay Informal BR here

The August BOM happening during R3 Book Games will either be
The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley or Funny Story by Emily Henry

We'll post here as soon as that decision is made - letting you know in case you need to get in library hold queues.

And the Arena Battle planning has begun with Lucy taking the first book of the battle.

Keep up the great reading everyone!

There are a few titles starting with Amsterdam but not much else with Ams as the first few letters - they are playing hard ball with their letter choices.

I can pick up:
The Amsterdam Adventure
Amsterdam by Ian McEwan unfortunately has too long a wait

If Marty, Ushashi or Lauri don't have anything they want to read.
