Suzanne | 5417 comments I mostly liked it. I didn't really LOVE any of the characters, but some of them grew on me. I did really like the ending.

message 1152: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments I have finished all the books I have claimed for the mini and have been putting alternatives for which my extra ones could be used.
Let me know if anyone needs to drop a read, and I can help!

message 1153: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I'm going to try to get my last two Wall 2 books read in the next couple of days, then tackle the other two. Cecily, if you can have a thriller on hand, just in case I can't get to Blood Orange, that would be great. I'm fairly certain I can get through Saint of Wolves and Butchers.

message 1154: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I’m going strong with all my books — should finish Watchers today (paranormal). I’m all over the place! I’ll finish all of them before deadline for sure. I just started The Familiar a few minutes ago. It’s pretty good so far. I was always fascinated by the Inquisition! (and Conversos) I’m German, Irish, Spanish, Portuguese & Native American. I gotta do my DNA!!
Gotta have a lot of interesting history there somewhere…

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 662 comments 1 down 3 to go. I switched them out for shorter books since length did not matter :)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 662 comments So I am currently reading Down among the Sticks and Bones as Book #2, However Lauri has a finished book we can use for #2 and I can use this book for YA, Fantasy, or Horror if anyone on those options needs assist

Melindam | 8295 comments Cat,

also The Familiar works for Historical Fiction/Fantasy if you already finished it. :)

Yeah, so far I cannot say that I am enamoured with any of the characters and it'll probably stays that way.
I find the writing really good and atmospheric, but I wish Bardugo could have bothered to write more about the historical setting. I am mostly familiar with the period and don't need infodumps, but it would have made it more interesting. I think it's a bit presumptuous on her side just to expect everyone to know what she's hinting at (all the books, the Spanish words, the culture, the city of Madrid, etc).
I wonder if the magic ever gets explained in more details or not?

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good Morning Guys - Working on my books. One should be finished today.

message 1160: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Good morning Maritza and team!

I'm reading a couple mini books now and should be starting on my last one in a few days - if anyone is reading/planning to read a non-integer series book between 12 - 19 to replace 17.5 Big Jack, feel free to take the window spot on that wall.

message 1161: by Melindam (last edited Jul 09, 2024 07:30AM) (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments My reading slowed down unfortunately due to work which has been crazy these past 2 weeks (everybody wants to save the world before their holidays) and the 2nd, toughest heatwave of the summer has just hit us full in the face. Today's temp reached 35 c/ 95 F , but it will rise even higher in the coming days. no respite until Sunday. 😖

I will definitely finish my current 2 books (The Familiar and 1453: The Holy War for Constantinople and the Clash of Islam and the West) until Friday and then I'll start reading the Backroom BOM on kindle and decide on my next audiobook as well. But these will already go to Round 3.

message 1162: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Summer humid heatwaves - ugh! I remember living in a non-AC apartment during a sticky heatwave and wearing a cold-dampened bandana around my neck at all times - good luck to you Mel!

I just realized that I missed BOM voting last week when I was away and my poor little fruit book nomination didn't even get 1 vote - lol.

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 662 comments I am in Seattle, WA for work and the State in general doesn't have air conditioning because they have never needed it so ya I am definitely melting this week.
What if we start a book but mark as a DNF can we count the pages we read? or is it a dud?

message 1164: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments You need to finish it for the page points to count. :)

message 1166: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Ouch - that's awfully hot. Lol I read that "with my fans" as in "I'm your number one fan" - and thought "that'd especially be hot with a lot of people."

message 1167: by Marty (last edited Jul 09, 2024 11:30AM) (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments Since weather is the topic of the moment, I add a Baton Rouge update - 91F and 65% humidity. It's quite steamy. Edit to add - this is pretty typical for July here, and air-conditioning is plentiful.

New Orleans is hotter, more humid and in the case of the French Quarter much more stinky with all the close quartered garbage bins.

Cecily Black | 1805 comments We are in the heat wave this time! Haha. I have been staying in with my AC but about to give it up for a week in NYC. Which will likely mean very little sleep for me haha.

I'm so excited and so fricken nervous! 2 more days! (some context, I have been suffering a bit of agoraphobia after my last relationship and have spent 95% of my time at home for the last two years. So getting on a plane and going to another country, to a city that's full of people and not having my home to run back to is a huge step but this is me taking back my life!) excuse me while I go vomit now lol

message 1170: by Melindam (last edited Jul 10, 2024 03:23AM) (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments @Cecily

it's a huge leap and I absolutely admire your courage for taking it. ♡

@Cat, Marty & Maritza - we are the hot ladies league... and @Suzanne is a fan of ours. ;) :D

message 1171: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Cicily- that's a big step - and you should be so proud of yourself!

I'm indeed a huge fan of all of you!
It's hot here too but a weird side effect of my illness is I'm cold all the time! I'm visiting the hospital for a couple hours every day getting IV antibiotics, which gives me some reading time. silver linings :)

message 1174: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments @Cecily, I've been there with agoraphobia. You are facing it head on, you champ you! Have you tried starfish breathing or the 5-4-3-2-1 method to ward off the panic?

I'm so sorry to hear that you still need to go to the hospital every day, what an ordeal! :(

message 1177: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments Aww you guys are so supportive! Did some packing today, the rest tomorrow! Anxiety is high but so is my excitement.
I got a little too much heat today feeling ick now.

@vicki wtg on a big points book!

@Suzanne I'm sorry you still aren't feeling well but I'm glad you are looking on the bright side for now and I hope you find some answers and help soon!

@melindam books will definitely be my safe place on the plane and my friend is giving me her spare key just incase I get overwhelmed and need a safe place to run back to.

@Teddie. Heart is definitely ready, brain is running wildddd! But it will be a good time. I have at least learned that my anxiety always makes things worse than they ever turn out to be so I just keep telling myself that.

@Marty I will be doing allllll the breathing and grounding exercises I can.

Okay now to try to relax and get some reading done. My focus is a little shot today haha

Sorry, not sure what has been going on for the last few days, but I haven't been around nearly as much as I'd like.

Cecily - good luck! Well done on booking the trip and taking such a big step out. I'm glad that your friend is providing you a safe space to be in if things get too much.

Suzanne - that's so rubbish that they haven't managed to clear it yet. Will keep hoping that you recover soon. Glad you are finding a silver lining in there somewhere.

Originally it was placed as a #24 so we could build a higher wall, but I figured maybe the cap/co-cap worried I wasn't getting it done. I'm OK that it was moved but just wasn't sure if it had been moved elsewhere. I'm okay with moving it to replace it for The Clinic. I'll do that now. Thanks for the idea. :) I think I'm going to move 2 other books not being used for the mini-to round 3. But I'll wait just in case.

UPDATE: I moved it but the date on the Shelter tab went through with a funky number instead of the date. lol

Apologies everyone, but with 60 hours left of the round, my controlling nature is starting to come out and I'm worrying about our progress on the mini! Means it's time I start shuffling things round, so sorry if I've moved something you are reading - I've tried not to touch anything marked as in progress on the round 2 tab.

MPG
S22 Nature - Vicki
S31 Literary Fiction - Ushashi (on track)
S38 Horror - Suzanne (back up if needed)

Series Wall
S54 #3 Marty
S56 #5 Lauri (confident)
S57 #6 Cat
S69 Window between 12 and 19 - Teddie (on progress)

If anyone is at a loose end for what to read, back ups for those without comments in brackets would be awesome.

Melindam | 8295 comments I just finished The Familiar (works for MPG Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Romance) if some further shuffling is needed.

It could go to the place of my Race of Scorpions for HF and Race of Scorpions can be a back-up for #3 in series. 😊

Considering that I'm travelling to Corfu in 2 weeks, I was planning to read My Family and Other Animals anyway. :)
