Suzanne | 5417 comments I prefer the first one - Anything You Can Imagine - as Melinda recommended it, and it's not a re-read.

message 802: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments Any duchess will do might be a little too hard

message 803: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Yes, good point - I don't think either is super easy but the Duchess one is worse.

message 804: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Yes, the "ine" ending is somewhat easier. There are titles like "I never/I need..."

I think INE has a better chance of sending back something friendly!

How's everyone doing this week? My mother in law was staying last week so I wasn't online as much, but I'm back now.

message 806: by Melindam (last edited Jun 18, 2024 12:16AM) (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments The first heatwave of the summer has reached Hungary (uughhh), although I cannot even complain, as in my part of the country the maximums will not reach above 35 C (95 F) this time and the nights are predicted to stay bearable (20-23 C). It should be over by Saturday(ish), but I just hate it all.

I am one of these totally unnatural persons who can't wait for summer to be over (still 10,5 weeks to go).

In other, better, news I am getting on well with another doorstopper audiobook + the backroom BOM and ready to start my battle book on Saturday.

message 807: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Suzanne, hope you'll enjoy the book about Peter Jackson and the LOTR movies. I loved it. 😊

message 808: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Good Morning. It's going to be 90 degrees today. Miserable. I don't like sweating or hot weather.

message 809: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments We will be going with Suzanne’s anything you can imagine. With that we are over the halfway point so good job everyone.

message 810: by Marty (last edited Jun 18, 2024 06:48AM) (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments I can volunteer for the 'In' challenge. I have In the Time of the Butterflies on my TBR, if that would work.

ETA - It's overcast, therefore cooler in Baton Rouge. Which means it's 79F rather than 90+F. Still humid though, which is normal.
The first tropical storm of the year is in the Gulf, but no indication it's going hit Louisiana.

Suzanne | 5417 comments Melindam wrote: "Suzanne, hope you'll enjoy the book about Peter Jackson and the LOTR movies. I loved it. 😊"

I got it on audible as soon as you mentioned it. So it's great having a reason to get to it!

The weather here has been funny. I am not a fan of hot weather, and later this week it's supposed to get very hot - 98 F - so about 37 C. But last night was a hard frost and I had to cover my garden so it didn't all die.

message 812: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Marty,

it is the other team now that needs to find a book starting with INE. :)
They will come back with their next title and then we need to find one with a minimum of 3 letters overlap.

Aw geez, I'm so befuddled right now. I need to take some time and reread the entire team thread. Blargh. Thanks for your patience with me, everyone.

Can we take some of the hot weather and balance things out a bit? Hasn't got above 21c here so far this year. If we take 5 degrees from somewhere else I'd be very happy - I don't want over 30c though thanks.

Marty - this one is a bit of a head scratcher. We're alternating books with district 9 and need a 3 letter overlap between titles.

The last few rounds have been:
Us: Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting
9: In Good Company (ING overlap)
Us: Anything You Can Imagine (any overlap)
9: to be decided but will overlap INE

message 815: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments Haha here in Alberta we had a frost warning last night. Seems decent today but we have not had much overly hot weather yet.

message 816: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments I'll gladly send you some heat over to the UK and Canada. :))

message 817: by Catherine (last edited Jun 18, 2024 10:08AM) (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments Im in the US-Utah and luckily it has cooled down the first of this week but back to 90*-99* by weekend I would prefer cooler temps. Maybe I should move to Canada :)

message 818: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
I feel like there's nowhere that's a happy temperature from our group!

Over 30 is only ever a reasonable temperature if I can sit in the shade and read a book with occasional dips in a swimming pool.

message 819: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3779 comments Hi District 7!

We’re beginning an official heat wave for the next week here in PA. 7 straight 90 degree days and a couple close to 100 🤪

Our next book will be In Every Dark Corner

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments I could pick up the next book with “Nerves of Steel” by Tammy Jo Shults

It cooled down AFTER we left! lol But we came home to it being about 20 degrees cooler since we only reached 84 degrees yesterday. So I'm enjoying the cooler weather and no AC!

message 822: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments Enjoy Nerves of Steel Cat

You are all making me feel hot and flustered now. Think I'll keep my high teens weather.

Finished a really interesting book (not for arachnophobes) - Children of Time if anyone enjoys sci-fi.

message 824: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments I know I am an odd one but with my chronic pain the heat makes me feel better. I have been enjoying reading outside and because of the heat nobody talks to me. Introvert win! :)

I'm glad to hear it is helping you feel more comfortable.

message 826: by Suzanne (last edited Jun 19, 2024 07:11AM) (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm halfway through Shards of Earth by the same author Sophie. I'm loving it - it's been checking off every "things I want in a Space Opera" box for me.

message 827: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments I also enjoyed Children of Time, Sophie. ;)

This was the first of his books I've read and I don't see it being the last. I found his ideas about humanity very thought-provoking within a well plotted book.

I've had this one and a few others by him on my tbr for so long - I'm reading at least one for this challenge!

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments Sophie wrote: "I'm glad to hear it is helping you feel more comfortable."
Suzanne I have never read a space opera, at least I dont think I have. I will have to try it.

message 831: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments Am I the only one that goes to other chats, Especially 9 ATM to read their comments. I sometimes giggle at the comments about choosing a book to benefit both teams

message 832: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Nah, snooping is half the fun. ;)

message 833: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3779 comments Greetings from District 9!

I agree snooping is half the fun! 😆

Our next choice to read is The Steel Kiss

message 834: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments I don't mean to grab other's chances for this battle, but found a short audiobook (just over 3 hours) titled "Is Shakespeare dead?" :)

But this is just a suggestion. :)

Sophie
Cecily
Teddie
Suzanne
Cat

I know Stephanie had planned to take the last book in the chain.

Currently Lauri, Ushashi, Marty, Maritza and Lucy haven't chosen a book to read.

We've got 60 hours to complete the chain with district 9 (who I am also snooping at along with various others).

message 836: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments When do we start? Also can you skip the K. I was thinking the next book needed to start with Kiss?

message 837: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
We need at least a 3 letter overlap which for this is iss. We might end up with a kiss title depending what people find.

message 838: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments forehead slap :)

message 839: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Cat,

you can only start after the countdown is over on 22 June. :)

message 840: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments I can read "the kiss quotient" I have it on audio so it will be a quick read

message 841: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'd be happy to be a backup for the Is Shakespeare Dead book mentioned by Melinda.

message 842: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments That seems like a better option then I suggested

message 843: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments That's great, Suzanne. :) Unless there are other volunteers, I'm sure we can handle this between is. :)

message 844: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments We could also wait and see if Marty wants to do the next book. I know previously Marty voiced wanting to join the challenge

message 845: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8295 comments Sure. The Shakesperae book is there as back-up, if there are no other options. :)

message 846: by Maritza (new)

Maritza (spanishwhispers) | 2241 comments Hi guys not sure what I should read

message 847: by Teddie (last edited Jun 19, 2024 04:46PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Maritza wrote: "Hi guys not sure what I should read"

Right now, District 9 sent us: The Steel Kiss

so we're looking for a book that starts with:
ISS (3 letter overlap)
KISS (4 letter overlap)

for the ISS, Mel found Is Shakespeare Dead?

There are a bunch of books that start with KISS, but if you want to read Is Shakespeare Dead? or another book that starts with ISS, cool!

We have 3 books left to plan for this battle - all books need to be started and finished June 22 - June 28.

So it's kind of what you feel like doing!

We'll also have 10 more books to do like this in the Battle in Round 3.

message 848: by Catherine (last edited Jun 19, 2024 05:08PM) (new)

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 661 comments I'm also available to pick up another read if needed from the last 3

message 849: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Note: Page numbers on the Shakespeare book. The linked version is only 56 pages. the audio is 3 hours. and several versions are over 100 pages. I'm not sure about rules here

Good catch - I just pulled the top result - perhaps a different one was the right one?
Is Shakespeare Dead? by Mark Twain
Is Shakespeare Dead? From my autobiography. by Mark Twain
