Does the page count provide more points for us? Curious what you are reading too.

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments Vicki wrote: "Does the page count provide more points for us? Curious what you are reading too."

The page points are a sum game, so 3 300 page books give us the same score as 1 900 page book. I guess the only difference would be that we can spread the 3 300 page books over a few resource piles - but we're keeping those easily balanced right now - we are still waiting to see whether that strategy will need to change :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments @Teddie, I would LOVE to read Verse and Vengeance to start us off; however, if you or someone else wants to I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

@District 7: I have been in Utah on a national forest sight-seeing vacation. We've been to Zion, Cedar Break, Bryce Canyon, Dixie, all national forests. We also went to see Funny Girl at a black box theater and that was too fun. I'm with hubby, one of my daughters and her girlfriend. I am the LATE NIGHT person, so that helped get reading done. And we drive home on Sunday so I'll get a lot of reading in that day too.

I've done a lot of reading while driving in certain parts and listening while "hiking" around too. I did move 3 books to round 2 that I thought I'd read this round but ended up adding other books instead as I went. lol

I have not been reading about the battle and other discussions until now. I'm trying to fully understand. IF I read Verse and Vengeance (or not), do I also need to look for a book with ATH letters? Or it appears the other team wasn't sure. I guess my question is do I need to look for a book with the overlap letters whatever that may be?

Another question: Does page count matter and I assume whatever books we read, the person reading will want/need to read them ASAP?

message 708: by Teddie (last edited Jun 14, 2024 07:44AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments All good questions Vicki!

First off - all of the first Battle Arena books will need to be started and finished the week of June 22 - June 28 (We'll get a countdown clock on this as we get closer to the dates.)

Once we as a team have settled on the 10 books we need to read during a Battle week, the books can be read in any order. Page count doesn't matter for the Battle, but does for our team score.

If you are up for reading Verse and Vengeance the week of June 22 - June 28 - awesome! I'll put your name next to that one - thanks!

Anyone can offer up book title ideas along the way :)

ETA: I hope you are playing the National Parks challenge over in Game Night - sounds like a fabulous trip!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Thanks for that nice summary, Teddie. I'm excited to get going on this battle! I just got the audiobook from my membership on Amazon and the ebook from Libby, so I am ready for June 22! Woo hoo! Let's BATTLE!

Nice Vicki, I live in Utah and recommend a trip here to every one. Southern utah is beautiful. Its starting to get hot though so wait until fall. You can also see the leaves change in the fall in the canyons near Salt Lake City, UT

No, it should be ten different books depending on what we find for titles overlap. :)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments Catherine wrote: "So do we all read the same book or think of new ones"

Mel's right - 10 different books/readers. Right now, we and District 9 are in the planning / strike / counterstrike phase. We sent Verse and Vengeance to them, and they need to find a book that overlaps with at least the last 3 letters of our book, to send back.

Strike 1: D7 sends Verse and Vengeance to D9 - Vicki to read
CS1: D9 sends AncexxxxTBD to D7

S2: D7 sends TBDxxxx book title - one of us to read
CS2: D9 sends etc....

We can all come up with ideas of which books to consider sending to D9 - throwing out an idea doesn't mean you have to read the book. We do, of course, need someones to read sent books eventually, but you get the picture.

Great Cecily! The entwives had an amazing round one - and you guys are seriously BOM champs!

Whichever books don't have a read date in the next few hours, we'll just move over to the Round 2 tab.

I'll be finishing the last MINI book soon and we'll be set there.

We're waiting for D9 to decide on which book to send, but like Stephanie said, great warm up earlier with the book they initially sent :) When they send over their counter strike title, anyone can suggest a book here on the thread and then we can figure out who wants / will read it during Battle week starting June 22.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I just added a read book but I put it on week 1 since I finished it tonight/June 14. I had to read it today, so I'm sorry for the late entry because I know you wanted our books posted earlier. If we can't include it, no worries but I figured I would try adding to week 1 since, I don't think, week 2 starts for a few more hours. I saved my much larger book to finish until tomorrow.

Finished my last Round 1 book - the BOM The Malevolent Seven. It was a struggle!

I couldn’t see where to put it as BOM on the tracking sheet and I can’t do a link to save my life. My DQ answers can be found in Messages 257 / 260 / 263 / 268 / 277.

The struggle for survival in the arena is a never ending cycle. Sometimes a tribute will luck into a boon but they are just as likely to be a victim of sabotage.

The Randomizer was let loose on all of the teams' resource supply piles. The Arena Masters are not heartless, the news isn't all bad. At least this time.

In Round 1, 1 pile receives a boon (15% page point increase), 2 are left alone, and 1 is the subject of sabotage (15% page point decrease). Impacts to resource supply piles are team specific.

Your team's randomizer results

Weapons: Left alone (protected by supply drop so left alone)
Shelter: Left alone (protected by supply drop so left alone)
Food: 15% decrease
Defense: 15% increase (protected by supply drop so left alone)

It's dropped us to 3rd which isn't disastrous at all.

In other news District 9 are sending us Ancestral Night. It's my son's school fair today, but I'll look for options a bit later if we haven't chosen anything before.

message 738: by Melindam (last edited Jun 15, 2024 04:39AM) (new)

Melindam | 8346 comments I have 2 options for title starting with Night, I can read either if needed.

A Night to Remember or The Night Watch

message 739: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments There are a bunch of "night" options - I'm not really seeing any reasonable books that start with fewer letters overlap, but if you guys do, great.

Here are a few "night" options:
Night
The Night Circus
The Night She Disappeared (might be too easy with -red)
Night Road
The Nightingale
Night Shift or The Night Shift or Night Shift (a few other Night Shifts as well)
The Night Swim
Night Watch or Night Watch or The Night Watch
The Night Olivia Fell
The Night Tiger
Night Film
Night Pleasures
The Night Country or The Night Country
Night School
Night Broken

There are no words Iin the dictionary starting ght and ight is an obscure old English word so titles with that are likely to be non-existent.

As I've said before, I have no problem with it being easy in the hopes they'll reciprocate.

message 741: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments And here WE were trying not to make it too difficult of a book for the next team...might want to change that strategy.

message 742: by Vicki (last edited Jun 15, 2024 06:39AM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Would something like Might Makes Right or The Light Between Oceans or Fighting Destiny work for a four-letter overlap or am I thinking wrong?

message 743: by Melindam (last edited Jun 15, 2024 07:03AM) (new)

Melindam | 8346 comments I think that Vengeance ending was not easy. :)

M/Light as title beginning doesn't work, it needs to be Night b/c of the necessary overlap.

message 744: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments Vicki wrote: "Would something like Might Makes Right or The Light Between Oceans or Fighting Destiny work for a four-letter overlap or am I thinking wrong?"

Almost - our titles have to start with whichever letters we pull from the end of their book, so:

GHTxxxx (3 letter overlap)
IGHTxxxxxx (4 letter overlap)
NIGHTxxxxxxx (5 letter overlap)

We will also try to keep our overlap sum low while doing this.

message 745: by Teddie (last edited Jun 15, 2024 06:58AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2289 comments I will say that we COULD use a supply drop book to add a letter in there, so if we did a 4 letter overlap with IGHT and used a book that starts with an M or L, we could make that first word Might or Light.

I don't think we need to here, even if we got new supply books in time - I think the supply drops are better used to protect our resource piles (this round's results notwithstanding lol.)

message 746: by Melindam (last edited Jun 15, 2024 07:08AM) (new)

Melindam | 8346 comments As we said, for a 5 points overall surplus in case we win, it's not worth making this unnecessarily difficult. :)

A 15% loss of points of suplies is much worse, so it's better to use supply drops to protect our points.

message 747: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments So in this case the four letter overlap is IGHT, so that means it would have to start with those four letters only...a word that would begin with IGHT which doesn't exist? Therefore we go to the next letter N?

message 749: by Marty (new)

Marty (martymill) | 167 comments A question (which has probably been answered before): If we started a book during round 1, and haven't gotten very far in it, can we count it for round 2 when we finish it?

That's right Vicki.

Marty - Night of the Animals, The Night Sister, The Nightwalker work because Night is the start of the title (ignoring The). The others wouldn't because the night is further into the title.
