Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Team Challenge - Book Games

District 7

I am not sure I understand, sorry.
I thought that we need to agree on our 1st book once you let us know what our start-book is and then we need to announce it to the opposing team. Our 2nd book would depend on ehat they choose to read and who among us would find a new book that would fit.

I don't know what your question is. I mostly will be just handling flow of information.

I am guessing you will announce what the start book is and will wait for us to come up with books we may have that would work?
What I don't understand is what "people not committed to read anything" means as this reading is expected for the last week of June, but we need to do all planning beforehand with the other team?

The upside is that my new townhouse is big enough that I can have a large storeroom as well as a craft room/library, and my cat is having the time of his life exploring cabinets and opening drawers (yep, he's a snoop).

Hopefully you get your well-deserved reading & relaxing time at your new place. :)
The Ersatz Elevator
Overlap of ERS
No books committed for battle so far
I can read this, but would be equally happy if someone else wants to.
ETA we can ignore The, A or An in titles as per the rules.

Yay well done on getting all that done after being let down. Cleaning to that standard is one of my worst nightmares - can never manage it.

It might be helpful to know a couple of people who are willing to read the books in the chain as a backup because life has a habit of happening!

re: new challenge
I am open to reading as much as you need for the challenge, some of this is a bit confusing but I think it will clear up as we move forward.

I used a dictionary to find words that started with Ers and it was basically ersatz or erstwhile... My library didn't have an erstwhile title surprisingly!

Verse and Vengeance
D9 will need to do at least a 4 letter overlap as it's a bit more difficult of a title start, so we won't be behind at all. Tor is a fairly easy book title start with torment, torch, etc. - and maybe that doesn't matter so much, but I thought I'd throw it out there to discuss.
Also, does anyone not want to read a book for the first battle? We'll make sure that everyone who wants to read will have at least 1 book to read over the 2 battles, but don't feel pressured to read for a battle :) And anyone can come up with book ideas!

I'm not convinced there's any benefit to making it harder for the opposing team.
1. It'll mean they send us back things that are harder to link to.
2. The points on offer for winning the battle are 5 i.e the same as a mini challenge task or 50 pages.

I am not sure for 5 extra points we should make this an exercise in forcing them and us suffer through impossibly titled books that may be hard to come by.

We try to include whether subtitles can be used when we write the tasks and in this mini we have been exclusively saying title not title and subtitle. So for this particular book we'd have IEG as the letters.

Let's do what we can to help D9 come to this conclusion as well :) I don't want anyone to have to suffer through reading anything - I guess we all can decide how many letters we want to overlap to find that sweet spot of being competitive without it being too painful.
I'm glad we're chatting about this now as it will help us make decisions on all the future battle books. :)
I up for reading whatever as well, though I don't do scribd at this point. Is Ersatz Krieg too painful of a title to send?
It's going to be a balance depending on what letters get shuffled back and forth.
Verse and Vengeance is on the spreadsheet and has been sent to district 9's captains as our first title so maybe we can just keep this in mind going forward!

I'm with ya! I didn't know we'd already sent the title, but it will work out. I can read Verse & Vengeance, or maybe someone else will end up wanting to read it once we have our final 10 battle books list.
This will be so fun!

The Mods are going to be locking up our Round 1 spreadsheet tab on our official game sheet an hour after the close of Round 1, so we're asking that everyone get their final round 1 READ books in about 12 hours before, so before you go to bed on June 14th. Otherwise, Round 1 In Progress / Planned books can be moved to the Round 2 tab. (If in doubt about moving the books, you can leave them on the Round 1 tab and we'll get them moved over to Round 2.)
If you're signed up for a Round 1 MINI task and would like someone else to read for it, just post to the thread - we have a few backup books for most of the tasks.
Just a reminder about The Hunger Games informal buddy read:
If you want to get the 20 participation points for the informal buddy read for

you'll need to post your 3 discussion posts before the end of 6/15/24.

We're nearly there with the mini! We've got 2 tasks left to finish (diacritic and horn on cover) and have back up options for both of them which is a wonderful place to be.
Thank you everyone for how much you've engaged with both the main task of building our resource piles and the additional challenges the mods have thrown at us with the mini challenge, the supply drops and now the battle with district 9.

If we are OK to go for the complete word, I have Death in the Spires by K.J. Charles.

We have our counterstrike book from District 9: Vengeance in Death
I see a bunch of different types of books starting with "At Home ..." like:
At Home: A Short History of Private Life
At Home in the World
At Home with the Horrors
At Home with Books: How Booklovers Live with and Care for Their Libraries
At Home With the Templetons
At Home
etc.
We are striving to hit the minimum of 3 letters overlap without hitting District 9 with too harsh of a strike wrt letters. And only title (not subtitle) counts for the battles.
ETA: Plus the Athena, Athlete, Athens or Atheism books mentioned by Mel above :)

Anyway those are the two books I found with easy access for me.

I was a bit too keen on announcing our book will be back soon with our confirmed book

That gives me a potential other chance to look for books that fit - it's like browsing in a candy shop!

Now I think everyone wants to do this quickly but I want everyone to get a chance to read, but do not want anyone to over commit.
I will post about the book title we are given and take up to 4 people who are not committed to read anything or after 6 hours (which ever comes first). I will use a dice roll to pick or the one with the best stratagy. If no first-timers volunteer I will open up to for 2nd book reader If I have no one after 2 more hours I will find something that works. Nobody should have 3 books of required reading.
I am planning on taking the last book if I don't have any that I need to take beforehand.
Any question before I start in 2 hours?
