Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments I'll definitely finish my mini books by the 15th, but I haven't started my second horns book, so if someone wants to grab that, feel free. (C26)

I'll be finishing up The Will of the Many (Hierarchy, #1) by James Islington either later today or in the morning.
If anyone liked Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan or Red Rising (Red Rising Saga, #1) by Pierce Brown you'll probably enjoy this one.

Catherine (royaltiescmb) | 660 comments I should be finishing up my last two books shortly. ETA Woven Song by Rachael Krotec Should be tonight and I did request the Page count to be added to Goodreads today.

My next book is Freaky Folklore Terrifying Tales of the World's Most Elusive Monsters and Enigmatic Cryptids by Darkness Prevails And hoping to be done by 6/11/24 in case any open spots need to be competed.

I've been looking forward to reading that one - and the Mark Lawrence one too - good month!

Yes, I'm planning to read the Mark Lawrence book, too. :))

I'm trying to work out if I'm going to pay for The Familiar as my library doesn't have it.

Seriously considering cancelling my KU subscription and using the money to pay for books I actually want to eat.

Do you eat books ??? :))))

Speed typing on my phone while being interrupted by children who decided to fight over whether a door should be open or shut.

No book eating here.

I didn't need to know about them too! Somehow I managed to ignore all the emails but this is a different matter.

message 618: by Melindam (last edited Jun 11, 2024 12:18AM) (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments Curse them, sadly they know how to play me with an email saying "all books on your wishlist are on sale".

Normally books on my wishlist are hardly ever on sale (I flatter myself that's because of my distinguished taste -giggles), so of course I had to rush in and check. Of course their idea of sale doesn't always coincide with mine, but this time....

Cecily - does at least 50% of hired help take place on the farm? If it less than 50% we can't use it for that task in the mini.

Audibles did just that . OMG I am happy and sad because now I have a ton of books to read and listen to. To bad reading wasn't my FT job.

I found a new MOST HATEFUL KU book. If you need one for Idaho still, then Murder at Mistletoe Manor will make you question all your life choices leading to the decision to read - and continue reading - the really terrible no good book.....

(for calibration purposes: worse than Mrs Fix-It, and I'm not even joking you (as my niblings would say))

Oh no! That needs to be avoided if it's worse than Miss Fix It.

Unfortunately for you I have found a KU series (Paradise Idaho) that is actually readable.

message 626: by Melindam (last edited Jun 11, 2024 11:11AM) (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments Fighting
Once the fight phase starts each team simply reads their planned books!
There's no requirement to read them in the correct order, but if at the end of the week you have missed a planned strike then you will lose the battle, regardless of how many of the rest of the books you complete.

"There is no need to read them in the required order" - does this mean that both we and the opposing team need to plan for all 10 possible books during that 1st week?

message 627: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Yeah, during week 1 we should plan for all 10 of ours and then read them all in a week. If people have signed up for more than one book it probably makes sense for them to read them in the order they come in the chain as the later books only count if the earlier ones have been read.

Thanks I've swapped that on the main sheet.

message 629: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Sounds like a cool challenge - and it scratches my "find books to fit" itch.

So can you duplicate a book? So read the exact same book as the opposing team? because that would match ALL the letters. Just wondering.

message 630: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
You could, but a shorter overlap is worth more points so we want to avoid doing that where possible and stick to 3 letters where we can.

Suzanne | 5417 comments If we end up needing backup, I could finish a book before the end of the mini. But, if not, I'll happily keep on reading the backroom bom and listening to Catching Fire.

We've got a few things that haven't been started yet and with 3 days left, time is getting a little tight.

If you happen to have:
Horn on cover
Authors name has a diacritic
Harvest in text
One of the food words in text

That we can use as back up, that would be wonderful.

message 636: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'll read Unicorns and Honey Cakes (Shifters and Sweets, #1) by Zoe Chant as a backup. It may end up being terrible, but it's short. It may have a food word in the text too.

message 637: by Cecily (last edited Jun 11, 2024 05:11PM) (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments One of the food words in text

The Inmate by Frieda McFadden
"...buying Lucky Charms and I guess eggs and cheese and bread and some other stuff we need." Page 106 Chapter 14

I read the book on June 07 that could be added for backup

message 638: by Cecily (new)

Cecily Black | 1805 comments back up for "harvest in the text"

Between Two Trailers by J. Dana Trent
I read on June 08

"...one harvest disappointed, the other came through." Page 165

message 645: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments OK, so I have reread the rules for the battle game.

Please correct me, but I want to make sure I get this right:

We will soon be given the title of a book and need to find another book to read with a 3-letter overlap (preferably only 3, because we are given more points for that).
Once we agree on Book 1 to read, we announce it to Team 9, who in turn will choose their counterstrike book and let us know. Once again, we choose our book 2, announce it, they get back to us ... etc., until we reach 10 books/team.

Between 15-22 June, we & Team 9 have to announce all our 10 planned books to each other.

Then Fight Week comes (22-29 June), where we will start and finish the planned books.

Did I get it? 😅

message 646: by Ushashi (new)

Ushashi (ushashib) | 567 comments I'm still around. Reading got slow because I was on a trip to the grand canyons and was too overwhelmed by the nature to read anything. But I'm back now so should be finishing up the half-read ones soon.

Sophie (drsophie) | 5684 comments Mod
Excellent work on the back up books, thanks everyone!

Mel that basically matches. We might be able to start planning in the next 72 hours a little earlier than stated in the rules.

With the overlap letters, one way to think about it that made more sense to me was that each letter counts as a point and the winner has the lowest number of points at the end of the round.

Hi I listed my book on bottom of ss of the mini. Have book with salt in it that I have finished.

message 650: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8291 comments Sophie, glad I almost got it right. :D

My back-up book is finished.

I won't finish more books for Round 1, but already started listening to a 1000 pager + have the Backroom BOM on kindle. I'll finish them after the 15 June countdown.
