Sorry got it. The link didn’t work for me.
Hi Snowtulip. Welcome. Hope you’re ready for some interesting reading,

Cindy | 152 comments How’s everyone’s reading going? Mine is still a little slow going. I have a couple books to add to the spreadsheet that I will do once I get a chance to get on my laptop. Right now I’m reading Hunger Games and am enjoying the reread

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Snowtulip! Yay so glad to have you joining us. Nice to see you my dear. :)

Vicki has the link to our team spreadsheet in Comment #4 - if you request access she'll get you added in quickly. :)

My understanding is we can use any of the books you've read since May 15th so once you've gotten access please feel free to add them to both the spreadsheet and whatever shelf you've designated for this challenge. Let us know here what your shelf name is as well.

Excited to have you on the team! Let us know if you have any questions. :)

Ugh right now I'm suffering through The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I'm struggling with it big time and keep picking up other things. I'm managing about 50pgs a week right now. But I'm determined to get through it so I can actually move on to the original parts of the series. But this book is just BAD.

Mixed bag here LOL. It was going really slowly the first two weeks, then I read three books in three days, then instead of continuing that series I decided to start trying to actually read books that fit the mini again (the rest of the books in that series weren't fitting) so I have slowed down a little again just because the new book is longer. Overall, I went from behind in my expected reading to one book ahead so I'm pretty pleased with myself for catching up.

I felt the same with that book -- though I think my problem wasn't so much thinking the book was bad as it was I hated Snow so much that I really struggled getting through a book from his POV.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Hi Everyone, so happy to join District 3!

I haven't read through the thread or rules yet, so I'll be doing that tonight 😊

I'm in the US (New Mexico) and read all genres, except horror (usally only do that for challenges). I'm currently reading The Boy Who Cried Bear, love these characters!

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Mini Update!

Hey Team! We're just under a week away from the end of the first mini challenge. Just wanted to put out a quick request that everyone review the books they've claimed for the mini and confirm that you'll be able to finish them within the week.

Absolutely no hard feelings if you have to remove a book, we just want to get a good look at where we are!

message 213: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Also - I just finished That Fine Line which works for BOTH the Idaho and farm tasks. It's a PG rom-com and I found it on Hoopla, of it sparks anyone's interest. ;)

message 214: by Vicky (last edited Jun 08, 2024 01:11PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Another quick mini update!

I just went through to see what we have read already and we have the books "banked" to cover the word in title hiding the smaller word AND the abundance task.

Kaley has a claim for both, Shelby has a small word claim and Ashleigh has the other abundant claim. You all have other claims on the sheet so if you want to take the pressure off those tasks and/or focus on a task we don't have books for, let me know and we can switch them out.

Absolutely up to you, just throwing the option out there!

message 215: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I’m fine with swapping mine out! I’m focusing on my Idaho book currently anyway so I’m happy to have my other unfinished ones swapped out if we have some banked!

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I put The Dickens Boy by Thomas Keneally in set on a farm. The blurb says so but I’m collecting it from the library for my book group so won’t know how much until I read it. Should be okay I think.

Also can reread Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan for the diacritic if no-one else has something in mind.

message 221: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments One of the books I already read fit for farm, so added that.

Looking to read a book for orange cover and set in Colombia.

May be able to fit another one in there, but will wait to see how this weekend goes.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I'm fine swapping me out as well if you need to. I'm still planning on getting to Hunger Games before the end of this round, but I plan to do my orange cover first.

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I will likely only finish the 2 books I am currently reading by the time the mini ends. I just added them to the mini now in spots that may have been previously claimed and I'm not sure if we actually need them or not based on the earlier messages here.

I put The Guncle Abroad (The Guncle, #2) by Steven Rowley for abundant in text and Stillhouse Lake (Stillhouse Lake, #1) by Rachel Caine for word in title is hiding a smaller word. I am totally fine if they don't get used, but I don't think they'll help for anything else in the mini. Unfortunately, I need to read all the books I have to read for book clubs and buddy reads earlier in the month, so I don't have much flexibility to adapt to the minis the way the timeframes work for this challenge.

message 226: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I’m off to the library tomorrow (public holiday today) to collect The Dickens Boy. Will look for John Le Carre to fill the last diacritic spot. Or failing him, Crete or horn on the cover. Have to be short because TDB is longish, I think.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Spreadsheet Questions

Ashleigh - Can you please double check what edition is correct for Sisters of the Vast Black? You have a different page count on your shelf than what is listed on the spreadsheet. :)

Jax - Please make sure The Long Quiche Goodbye is on your shelf.

message 228: by Shelby (last edited Jun 09, 2024 10:18PM) (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments So my game plan for the week - I've almost finished Chasing Fire (orange cover) as I'm listening to the audio while I update things. Gonna tackle my other orange cover book next.

1. Chasing Fire
2. Born to be Badger
3. How I Stole the Princess's White Knight and Turned Him to Villainy (audio for Cornucopia task)
4. Horn cover (Dragonwatch I think)
5. Crete book (Greeking Out)

Also going to still try to get Hunger Games in there just because I have to have it done to meet the BOM requirements.

message 230: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I'm finishing up a horn book and then focusing on my Crete book. I don't want to fully commit to anything on top of that just in case this week gets weird...

BUT I do have an orange book and a diacritic book checked out from the library so I'll see where we are once I knock out the Crete book and might be able to squeeze one in.

I also found Zorba the Greek available on Audible for free. Goodreads says it's set on Crete.

I may pick up one more book if needed, will check when I finish these two.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments NEW MINI JUST DROPPED

In order to succeed in the Arena you will need to battle with your competing District Tributes.

You have been matched with an opposition and will fight them twice (once in round 2 and once in round 3), switching who strikes first.

The fight will consist of parrying book titles back and forth, by matching the end of your opposing team's title with the start of your own. You can use or ignore articles at the start of the title. There must be an overlap of at least three letters.

Planning
To start the fight each pair will be spun a title by the Arena Masters. The first team must find a book with a title that overlaps by at least three letters, and declare their planned strike to their opposition team, who must then plan their riposte. Each team will plan out a maximum of 10 strikes each this way.
Books can be read in any language, but titles must be in English.

Note: planning must be completed within the first week, and you must NOT start reading any book until the second, fight, week.

Fighting
Once the fight phase starts each team simply reads their planned books!
There's no requirement to read them in the correct order, but if at the end of the week you have missed a planned strike then you will lose the battle, regardless of how many of the rest of the books you complete.

Supply Drops
Supply drops from your partner team can be used to provide ONE extension letter to help you make an overlap.
You can use either the first or last letter of your supply drop title to make the overlap work.
Supply drop books can be read during either of the two weeks, and may be started at any point during the challenge.

Points and Winning
Each team gets 5 bonus points for each completed strike
The winning team in each pair will get a further 5 bonus points
The winning team will be either:
- the team to make the last completed strike, if not all 20 books (across both teams) are read; or
- the team with the smallest number of overlap letters in their strikes, if all 20 books are read; or
- if there is a tie for number of overlap letters, a coin toss will be made by a neutral mod to decide the winner.

Example
Team A will strike first.
Their randomly assigned book title is Orphan Black.

Team A Strike 1: Blackwater (BLACK overlap, 5 letters)
Team B Strike 1: Terms and Conditions (TER overlap, 3 letters)
Team A Strike 2: Onset of Danger (ONS overlap, 3 letters)
Team B Strike 2: Anger (ANGER overlap, 5 letters)
Team A Strike 3: Gerald's Game (GER overlap, 3 letters)
Team B Strike 3: Me Before You PLUS a supply drop letter A (AME overlap, 3 letters)

Team A final total (of overlap letters) = 5 + 3 + 3 = 11 letters
Team B final total (of overlap letters) = 3 + 5 + 3 = 11 letters

Battle Pairings

District 1 & District 8
District 2 & The Capitol
District 3 & District 13
District 4 & District 12
District 5 & District 11
District 6 & District 10
District 7 & District 9

Timings
The first week in each of Round 2 and 3 shall be for planning your fight
The second week in each of Round 2 and 3 shall be for fighting your fight

In Round 2 Districts 1 - 7 will strike first
In Round 3 Districts 8 - The Capitol will strike first

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments This will take some coordinating both amongst us as a team and with District 13. Also does require some faster flexible readers. We can not start any of the planned books for this mini until the second week of Round 2 and all books must be read within that week with a max total of 10 planned books.

Please speak up if you think you'll be able to participate in this reading. It will probably make for some really specific reading that week but our 10 books do not have to be read in order, they just all need to be completed during that week.

We do get to strike first and our first initial word is MIDDLEGAME. Optimal first book would start with AME. So anything starting with America as an idea. I have an option that would work An American Princess: The Many Lives of Allene Tew (we can ignore articles at the start of a title) at 226pgs. It's not originally on my planned reading list though so if someone has something different I'm open to options.

message 239: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I have a few questions:

-Am I reading correctly that we want FEWER overlap letters? So strategy-wise we'd want to keep it to 3 per book if at all possible?

-When they say planning has to all be done in week one -- does that mean we have to figure out what we're doing for the first one, then wait to hear what they are responding with, then plan for the second strike, etc. all in the first week? And then the second week is just trying to make sure we get through all 10? Or do they have to be read in the correct order too?

message 240: by Shelby (new)

Q1: That is correct. The best case scenario is to find books that only match with 3 letters.

Q2: Basically correct. Yes between now and week 2 we are supposed to figure out all 10 attacks for both teams. And then in week 2 make sure we get all 10 books read. While we don't have to read them in the strike order, we only get to count those read up until the miss if we didn't finish. So say...

Attack 1: Finished
Attack 2: Finished
Attack 3: Finished
Attack 4: Finished
Attack 5: Finished
Attack 6: Un-Finished
Attack 7: Finished
Attack 8: Finished
Attack 9: Finished
Attack 10: Finished

We would only have completed 5 strikes. Attacks 7-10 would not count as we didn't finish Attack 6.

message 241: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Kaley

Correct on fewer overlap letters being better. Although with only 5 bonus points for the win it won't make or break us to not have the fewest.

And yes that all books need to be planned in the first week. Reading of the planned books both STARTS and ENDS during week two, but they do not need to be finished in any particular order.

message 242: by Kaley (last edited Jun 11, 2024 01:13PM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Thank you both!

Depending on what kind of letters we end up stuck with, I should be able to help read a book or two for it. Just kind of depends what we get stuck with! (I am definitely willing and able to read something just for a specific task, but since I'm a mood reader doing so sometimes burns me out if I don't like it, so I'm hoping we get at least one set of letters that aligns with something I know I'd like :-P )
