Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments How do you put an e with an acute accent into the spreadsheet? For Andre Malraux. I can't do it here either. This is beyond my meagre computer skills.

message 152: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments All accented characters have ALT codes on English PCs, you'll hold down the ALT key and put in the 4 digit code on your num pad. For the e acute it's ALT+0233, and there's a full list of them here: https://sites.psu.edu/symbolcodes/win...

If you don't have a num pad or it's otherwise not working out, the next easiest thing is just to copy and paste the author's name straight from Goodreads. :)

message 153: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments If you're on a Mac just hold down the e and it should pop up with accent options. Not sure on a PC

I understand it a bit more now having reread the supply drop instructions. Am I right in thinking the books we send have to have a defence for the protection part as well as another thing eg food?

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I can’t find this in the rules and can’t remember…do mini books need to be started after June 1 or just finished within the mini window?

Thanks Vicky and Shelby.

Catsalive | 423 comments Vicky wrote: "I'd love everyone's input on this, so please discuss! My feeling is, at least for the first round where we don't have a mini to worry about, that we start off on the right foot and send over a supply drop. Doing it this round doesn't mean we're obligated to do it for the next so we can absolutely reevaluate for round two, but with no mini completing for our books until round 2 starts we don't lose anything by sending over a few books. :)..."

I think it would be worth it, there's bound to be a benefit at some stage.

Just checked, and fixed Flat-Out Love!

Lucy Luu (lovelucyluu) | 238 comments I think sending books as a gesture of goodwill for the first week is a great idea!

That's where I am too. Definitely for the first round where there isn't any limitation on us to do it, but I'm expecting there will either be a benefit for teams who send or a penalty for teams who don't at some point . . . like extra obstacles for selfishness haha

message 161: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 152 comments I agree with it being a gesture of goodwill.

Thanks for adding that to the spreadsheet, I will update the info later today, I’ll have two more books to add also

Just finished within the mini window! :)

There's no requirement for us to send anything specific. The defense use isn't the only use for books received (although arguably the most useful) but it's up to the receiving team to decide how a book fits there.

message 164: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I agree we should send something and see how it works out later.

message 165: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I saw that The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer has a June 16th BOM start date… am I correct in thinking that means we have until July 16 to finish it? These mid month dates are really throwing me off. I was hoping to get to it in June but due to other challenges I’d like to push it to the beginning of July if I’m understanding it correctly and that still works for BOM here.

message 166: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Yes Ashley, that is correct. You have a month from the start date within which to read the book. :). I myself will only be getting to a couple of the May BOM’s here at the start of June.

Thank you!

message 168: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh (ashleighbailey) | 103 comments Have we decided if we are doing supply drops and how we are going about it?
I was thinking that as books under 100 pages don't give much points (and quicker reads) maybe we can use books like that?

message 169: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I think we're all on the same page with sending some books, but we haven't decided which books.

I honestly don't think it makes too much difference as we still get to keep the page points and use the books we send in our own resource pile.

Okay, I have more of an understanding now. I was having trouble wrapping my head around it.

message 171: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I just reread the rules and realised that we can use received books in our mini but not books we send. That makes sense for the helping each other out part so long as the books have been read in the right time frame. eg we have a book that only fits a mini task we've already completed,

Mind you I could be making that up, thinking I understand it hahaha

message 172: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments For the locations on the mini challenge like Idaho, Crete and Panama can we read a non fiction book that mostly takes place there? For example, a book about some one who grows up in Idaho or a history of the Panama canal?

Yep. Non-fiction is fine for location. :)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Are we allowed to re-use food words in the mini? I didn’t see in the rules that specified, so I assume we can, but just wanted to check just in case. The book I’m reading (won’t finish till tomorrow after the mini starts) has mentioned multiple of the options so I didn’t know if I needed to list them all in case one got duplicated.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Spreadsheet Questions

Ashleigh - You have a book "The Ones We're Meant to Find" on your shelf, but it's not rated nor does it have a read date. If it's a book you've finished can you please add the read date and add it to the spreadsheet.

Ashley - Can you please add Can You Keep a Secret to your shelf?

Jax - Can you please add the Page Count for the edition of Dumplin' you read and make sure that it's on your shelves?

Kylie - I added A Civil Contract & Family Matters to the spreadsheet, please fill in the resources when you get a chance. :)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments What do we think are going to be the hardest tasks in the mini? I have The Day of the Triffids down for the small hidden word but just came across harvest in the text. Seems a bit harder than the word thing.

message 181: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I would go ahead and switch it! I'm finishing up The Malevolent Seven which we can slot in for another hidden word and it's definitely easier to find things in the title than words in text!

message 182: by Elisabeth (last edited Jun 02, 2024 06:40PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I agree. I moved it. I have another book that could be used for a word but something else might pop up in the text.

message 183: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Capts -- do you want us to put the mini ref # and reason on the tracking tab or the spreadsheet, or is that a capts only field? Just want to make sure I'm putting it there if I'm supposed to / leaving it blank if that's only for you.

message 184: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments You can put it there! We have another column we'll use to finalize.

And, if a book works for multiple things, feel free to note it in the reason column so if we need to shuffle we can. :)

Hope everyone is reading some good books....

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Cornucopia + BOM Note!

For anyone reading Starling House for the BOM, it will work for author initials in Heracles. So that should be an easy way to fill that up!

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I’m really enjoying my books so far. Loved rereading The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham . Funnily enough I discovered a lot more in it than when I read it at school. Very interesting discussions about the rebuilding of society which entails people discarding all their preconceived notions and beliefs about how society should operate. The new society needs to develop new methods in order to function and survive because everything else has gone. It was written in 1951 so gender roles were different and also the Cold War was full on. Very thought provoking.

Also have a copy of The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder which I’d forgotten about until I saw it on the list. That’s an interesting book too, which I’ll reread after I finish my Agatha Christie with the sheep’s horn on the freaky looking cover. Murder is Easy by Agatha Christie

No doubt you can tell I’m enjoying this!

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments That's awesome Elisabeth! I always feel like a challenge resparks my interest in reading and pushes me to read more. It's certainly making my walks more interesting as I've done more audiobooks than usual.

message 189: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments Hey guys. Sorry I've been absentee this week. We've been busy with the Palestine Manifestations. But I was doing my good-girl reading.
Finished two books, but I couldn't get around to the May BOMs, even though I was really interested in them.
I'm not going to ask "What did I miss?", I'm going to try and figure it out on my own.
I'll check this month's BOMs first and decide my next book.
Let me know if you want me to pay for being MIA. Though I wish you guys, CAPTAINS, make me pay, just to keep me on my toes.

Bee if you're interested in the BOM's you still have time to read them. You have a month from the start date of the BOM to read it so until June 16 for The Malevolent Seven and really the end of June for Salt & Broom.

And no worries about getting busy. Totally understand. Just glad you're still with us!

It's good to hear that, but I already started the June BOM, I'll see if I can get to one of them when I'm done

Lucy Luu (lovelucyluu) | 238 comments I don't know if this will be helpful for anyone, but I borrow ebooks from the library and I also have Kindle Unlimited. There is a search function that I use to search for words that will complete challenges. Just wanted to give out that tip if it might help.

message 194: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments I have a question: For the mini challenges, can books started before the 1st of June but finished after it count for the mini? Or does the book have to start after the 1st of June to count?

message 195: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments My book: The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve work for the mini challenge Author initials in HERACLES task.
I added it to the sheet

message 196: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Bee - Yes, we can use books started before the first as long as you didn't finish them before then!
