Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Hello Elisabeth, Lucy and Ashleigh! Glad to have you with us! :)

Quick Reminder for Everyone

We've got 5.5 days to go until go time! I'm still missing 8 people over on the tracking spreadsheet, so please go check it out. You can either click "view now" and then "request edit access" or send me your email in a PM! :) Also if anyone doesn't feel comfortable recording their books on the spreadsheet, just give us a heads up and we'll make a post format so we can get all the info!

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments JUNE BOMs

The June BOM polls are over, we'll get more info up about them when the threads go live but one of them has a pretty long hold among my library options so I wanted to give everyone a heads up incase you want to get holds going!

Games Theme: The Wishing Game (This is the one that had big holds for me)
Adult BOM: Starling House

message 53: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I own The Wishing Game and haven’t read it yet, so maybe I’ll have to plan to get to it in June!

message 54: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Looks like The Wishing Game is about 3 weeks’ hold for audio for me so I should be good to volunteer on that one when the time comes! I also own a copy of Starling House that I thankfully haven’t read yet either (voted for that one for that reason LOL) so I should be able to volunteer for DQs / read for both hopefully!

Cindy | 152 comments I requested The Wishing Game from my library but it has a long waitlist so we shall see if I get it in time or not

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I just clicked the 'request edit access' button. I don't remember having to do that before but maybe I have. Who knows?

I'm planning to read The Soldier's Art The Soldier's Art (A Dance to the Music of Time, #8) by Anthony Powell set in WW2 as my first up,so I'm assuming that qualifies as weapons.

Do we add books in the section we think works?

I'm also planning to read Jude the Obscure Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy . According to the blurb Jude is a stonemason which will qualify the book for either defence or shelter. Do we need a quota for these resources?

Requested Access!

Also, I have both June BOMs.

Heli | 509 comments It looks like I can get The Wishing Game from my library.

message 60: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Elisabeth

The plan is to have everyone enter information into the resource section about all of the categories that work for a book. As of right now we've been told there is no quota or goal for any specific resource, but I'm also not sure what the mini challenges will look like and if they'll affect that.

That said I think the tactic to start is just to get as many possibilities as we can and then when the captains move things over to the *official* sheet we'll try to keep the resources balanced-ish for the start.

You can take out the "Cats or" part in the Reader section for me if you like. I know who I am :0)

message 62: by Catsalive (new)

Catsalive | 423 comments I will do a Hunger Games re-read for this.

Aren't listed wait times funny things? I just got an email that The Wishing Game is ready for me . . .11 hours into a "three week" hold LOL. Must've been a LOT of skips because I'm #34 in line. And now I have to skip it too haha.

message 64: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Also, just requested edit access!

message 65: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I was just reviewing the instructions because when planning my month of reading, I kind of forgot to keep the categories in mind. I know there is a lot of room for creativity here, so hopefully it won't be a problem.

Anyway, I noticed that there were colors listed in the ideas for each category. Grey/metallic definitely makes sense to me for weapons but I was wondering if anyone knew how the other colors connected so it would make it easier for me to remember.
Shelter (red, purple, pink)
Food (yellow, orange, white)
Defense (green, blue, brown)

message 66: by Bee (new)

Bee (abirbee) | 667 comments I'm planning on reading The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve. I don't know how to classify it yet (I have to read the rules page again)
I'm gonna try to do both the BOMs, they look interesting.
And I have always wanted to read the hunger games Trio, so I'll give it a try.

message 67: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Ashley - plenty of room for creativity! I previously asked the mods about colors and the examples they gave are not set in stone. Any color can be used for any resource as long as we can provide a reasonable connection!

Brown, for example, could weapons for the wood of the arrow shaft OR shelter because of a log cabin OR food because of those overripe bananas sitting on my counter that I promise will be banana bread soon OR defense for a wooden fence. So plenty of wiggle room there as well!

message 68: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments So all three of my books for my other weekly challenges are all super fitting for here! *headdesk* Guess I'm going to have to delay reading them until after Tuesday.

Oh well, it'll end up being a good thing anyway as I doubt I'm going to get much reading done this weekend as it is. Just got brought on to a last minute project with the writers I work with and we have to have the teaser all put together and ready for delivery by Monday...so essentially that'll be my weekend. :D A blessing and a curse, we're going to be working on a tight, tight schedule, but at least it's an excuse to not have to pick any books to start over the next couple of days.

message 69: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments Does the assignment of our books to one of the sections continue for the whole 3 months?

message 70: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Elisabeth - Yes. The resources are the main component of the challenge, so everything we read will have to fit into one of the categories to count for points throughout the whole three months.

Then we'll have other fun things sprinkled on - I believe the first mini will start about two weeks in, so we'll probably get some information on that shortly after we start!

message 71: by Heli (new)

Heli | 509 comments I'm working on finishing most of the five books I'm currently reading before this challenge stars.

message 72: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Oooh we're getting close. I'm all twitchy! Definitely plan to finish King of Thorns (The Broken Empire, #2) by Mark Lawrence before everything starts as I switched off of the audio to be able to finish since I have the physical copy. Then I think my plan is going to be not to start anything more than 200pgs over the next two days and save as many points for the challenge as possible. :D I've got a couple of shorts I need to read so knocking them out seems like the best plan.

message 73: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Happy Challenge Eve, team! We're just under the 24 hour to go mark. :D

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments For those that don't know...I don't think we've posted it here. Nominations are going on for the Backroom BOM right now. Now this BOM does take place in a separate group, but that's because since this challenge and group is all ages we keep the BOM's over here clean and everyone friendly. The Backroom has had some real interesting reads over the years, but the basic premise is that those "steamier" reads that we can't nominate over here are all on the table for the Backroom.

Head on over and add your suggestions (you may have to join the group first if you haven't in the past), there've been some good ones already thrown into the ring. And lets just say the discussions over there are always highly entertaining.

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I finished a book just after midnight last night, which sadly was my first book of the month... although I did read a delightful little graphic novel in there as well. I'm only halfway through my audiobook so I'm hoping to focus on getting through a good chunk of it before the challenge starts so I don't have too much carryover. Excited to begin!

message 80: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I’m slowly reading Unruly The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens by David Mitchell and using it as a time filler between challenges. It’s very funny and one to dip in and out of without losing the enjoyment. Christmas present from son and daughter-in-law who now are expecting me to know everything on English royal history for our family quiz sessions.

I've got Salt & Broom for audio so i can listen to it while i'm cooking/cleaning/driving and then my physical book will be Sundial because it's a library book!

I enjoyed this read Ashley. Hope you do too!

message 91: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I'm started The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0) by Suzanne Collins on my audio with my walk this morning as I figured why not get the prequel in before reading Book 1 for the BOM. :)

As for my physical read it'll either be The Muffin Man (Magic Emporium) by Kim Fielding or The Hitman's Guide to Codenames and Ill-Gotten Gains (The Hitman's Guide, #5) by Alice Winters since I need both by Friday for my Bingo challenge.

͙⁺˚*・༓☾ final girl (ari) (afinalgirl) | 31 comments well, as usual, despite me planning what i was going to start reading i veered off at the last minute and grabbed a litlte novella from the cornucopia! i'm going to use it as a weapon (there's a tooth on the cover so i feel that's a bit violent and aggressive lol, and the mc uses a gun), but it was a nice quick little read to get started. now i'm starting my planned reads as my dishwasher is on, the kids are at school, it's my day off and the weather is so perfect for cosying up in my couch ♡

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I do love how a good team challenge does kick my reading slumps in the butt and makes me excited for the next book. Ended up staying up way to late last night reading my second book. But it was totally worth it, Ready For Love (Semper Fi, The Forever Faithful, #1) by Stella Starling was all the sweet feels I wanted last night.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Hey team! Sorry I missed day one - this has been a WEEK. I had a ton of bloodwork done on Monday and it kicked. my. butt.

I've literally been getting home from work, eating some dinner, taking a two hour nap and waking up just in time to get lunch ready for the next day and get into bed. It's just after 8 here now and I'm about ready to pass out. But the good news is I did not need to nap today, energy is on the upswing, and they cancelled overtime for tomorrow! Phew.

I'm working on the audio of The Grace Year, my in person book club's pick for this month, and I have about 2 hours of listening time left so I should finish it up tomorrow. Then I'm going to jump into The Malevolent Seven for the BOM!
