Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I would go ahead and move on to the O book. I'm excited about my Mexico book so I don't want to make you read one you're not excited for. ;)

We still need 14 books to finish out both wheels so we have plenty of time!

Susan A | 461 comments plot element that can be linked to the district

Bloody Genius -- MC is a detective, in this story he is investigating a murder

He lives on a farm, does some farm work (throwing alfalfa) and there are multiple scenes on the farm...but I don't think any of this has anything to do with the murder he has to solve.

Is this enough for plot element agriculture, or should I leave in the letter E spot?

message 854: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments hmm... good question, let me double check with the captain's group.

Do we have to finish both wheels before we get new ones or are they played separately?

message 857: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments They are separate!

message 858: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I'll be done with my FARM in title book shortly. I'm not going to claim another book yet since I have a busy weekend ahead and I don't know how much reading I'll get in -- but I'll keep an eye on open tasks when I have time to sit down and read again.

Susan A | 461 comments Plot Elements Box

Am I supposed to be looking for just District 11 plot elements, or elements from any district because we don't know what our next spin will be?

message 860: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I'm assuming you mean to enter into the spreadsheet? In which case, any district please!

Unless you're reading a book specifically for the current spin - in which case feel free to skip all the extra information because books will be locked in once we complete a given set of tasks.

message 861: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments July was a rough reading month for me. I didn't like most of the books I read all that much, and it turns out I definitely need more thrillers in the mix to keep me reading. Hopefully I can pick up the pace for the last couple weeks of the challenge.

Susan A | 461 comments green cover for district wheel

I'm willing to read this

East (Billionaire Ranch) by Vanessa Vale

This is what the cover at hoopla looks like....but this is the audio CD edition. Do I need to get a new edition added? (Tineye shows >50% green)

message 863: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments As far as I'm concerned if it's any audiobook format listed on Goodreads, it's the cover on the platform you listened from, and you're willing to put that edition on your shelves - it's good.

If, for your own record keeping, you'd rather have one that says it's just an Audiobook and not an Audio CD - I can make a new edition when I get home this evening.

I'm fine with this edition. I usually don't put audio editions on my shelf at all. I just don't like the look of them and they don't list page count. After the challenge is over, I'll go back to any audio editions I had to put on the shelf and change them.

message 865: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Quick Update!

I just did a full sweep of shelves.

- Anyone with books on their shelves that weren't on the spreadsheet, I added them.

-Any books read through July 31st have been added to the official spreadsheet, so no need to go back and do resources if you hadn't added them yet.

-Individual Issues:

@Carmen - Could you add Desire Unchained and The Tattooist of Auschwitz to your challenge shelf?

@Shelby - I think because you had a previous Mockingjay read it needs a new read date?

@Snowtulip - The Husbands needs to be added to your shelf and needs a read date.

@Susan - Bareback needs to be added to your shelf and needs a read date.

-Most likely after the weekend is over I'll hide all the books read before August 1st just to keep things cleaner for the wheels - so if you haven't updated yet, please try to do so over the weekend! :)

Works for me!

Susan A | 461 comments Hmmm. I’ve already added Bareback twice. Maybe I have multiple editions on my shelf.

message 868: by Susan A (last edited Aug 02, 2024 02:44PM) (new)

Susan A | 461 comments okay...it was edition issue. I can't find it on the spreadsheet , but this is the correct edition. It should be dated and on my shelf now. I made sure the right edition is on the spreadsheet

It looks good now! It might be some weird quirk about having multiple read dates.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Mini Update!

District Wheel: We're two books away! Susan is reading for the green cover and I'm reading for Mexico. I suspect we'll have it wrapped up this weekend.

Arena Hazards: We're four books away for this one and we have people reading for all the letters.

We have a few extra books in the bank, but don't quite have the mix of letters we'd need to complete the Arena Hazard before the current readers are done. But I'll keep an eye through the weekend to see if we can shuffle and get it in sooner rather than later! :)

message 871: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I’ll finish my AH B book this morning and will push to finish the T as well. It’s a fairly quick read if I focus on it.

message 872: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Question — are we able to finish books now that get used for a wheel later?

Example — I have a yellow cover book due back to the library in a few days and I was going to try to read it now, but I’d hate to waste a yellow cover since we don’t need one yet. But if we’re allowed to finish it now then slot it in for something later (assuming we don’t use it for something else sooner) I’ll go ahead — and then if we never need yellow we can use it for something else.

message 873: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I think the answer is yes. They’re the banked books.

message 874: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Yep, anything we read from here on out can be banked for any wheel we get through the end of the challenge!

message 875: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Ok perfect!

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments Sorry for being MIA. I did finish a book late last night since it’s been chaos in the house but hopefully things will be complete today and get more reading done.

Susan A | 461 comments Excellent! We are done the first spellout!

message 878: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Nice job! I just requested a new spin from the captain's group and will post our new spell out as soon as someone can spin it for us. :)

Fixed. No it was just my laziness. I hadn't actually fully updated the read yet so there was no read date or shelving happening.🤪

Sorry I'm a bit behind guys. I had a bunch going on this last week and of course the books I'm on right now are all on the weighty tome side. Will try to fit in a couple of easy reads for letters here in the next couple of days as I keep working my way through the 3 books I'm reading right now.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Mini Update

New Word: ELECTRIC FORCEFIELD

C x32 - filled in one from bank
D
E x4
F x2
I x2
L x2 - filled in one from bank
O
R x2
T

We have three books left in the bank that we could use to fill in some letters, but they also work for full covers/countries - so I'd rather hold on to them until we get closer to finishing the word and then use them if we need them.

As always I, O and the volume of E's (x4, yikes) will probably be the tougher letters if anyone wants to target them first.

This word IS one of the three I talked about being better for a lack of uncommon letters; but it does have the nasty 4 Es. So opinions on whether we stick it out with this one or gamble for a slightly better one are welcome!

message 882: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Also I'm working on my Mexico book today, should be done in time to get another spin in for that wheel this evening. :)

message 883: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I have a lot of "E" books on hand, so I can take a few of those if we need.

message 884: by Elisabeth (last edited Aug 03, 2024 03:11PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I vote stick with it. It’s longer but we’ve already covered some and the letters are common. I can cover an I and most of the others— not that I will!

Just noticed that the I book is set in China, so maybe not for this.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments A Bunch of Different Updates

Spreadsheet Upkeep

I've hidden all the books read prior to August 1st as well as all the books we've already locked in for the wheels just to keep things less hectic!

Lucy - Can you add Rise for the School for Good and Evil and Lilly and the Octopus to your shelves?

Kylie - Can you add Gunshot Road to your shelves?

New Wheel!

New District Wheel is... District 13: Nuclear Weaponry
BOMB in title
orange colour cover (50%+)
#13 in series
orange text on cover
item related to district on the cover
author first & last initials in NUCLEAR WEAPONRY
set in United States (50%+)
plot element that can be linked to the district

I filled in a few of our banked book on the current spell out and we're currently 6/18 read with 1 each of O, R, C, I, L, D yet to be claimed.

message 886: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments item related to nuclear weaponry on the cover? So...what are we looking for?

I have The Hot Zone on the spreadsheet -- that has a weapon on the cover -- a knife, Is that too basic?

message 887: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Yeah I think the nuclear is the important part of this one - think bombs, mushroom clouds, radiation symbols, depictions of atoms, nuclear apocalypse landscapes, etc.

message 888: by Elisabeth (last edited Aug 04, 2024 03:55PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments Comrade Koba. I can read this but the link may be a little weak . The MC telling the story is the son of a nuclear physicist in Stalin’s Russia. I don’t think the father is in the story though. It’s a plot element though because he will have shaped the boy’s life and thinking.

Updated my shelves. I was updating all my challenges and then I got distracted. lol

message 890: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I put Comrade Koba by Robert Littell in as nuclear weapon plot element. I’ve started it and he refers to his father quite a bit. Stalin’s nuclear weapons program was important at the time and his father was hailed a hero after he died of radiation poisoning.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I want to try to finish my two long books first (I've got about 300 or so pages left in both of them) but I've got another quick I book that I can tackle after if we're still needing that one.

I've got to proof a contract for the lawyer I work for and then I'm going to dive back into Assassin's Quest. Hoping to finish it tonight and then finish The Book that Wouldn't Burn tomorrow. I know I'll get through a chunk of it on my walk tomorrow as I've got it on audio as well as the physical copy.

message 895: by Susan A (new)

Susan A | 461 comments I'm currently reading/listening to The Sanatorium -- works for TS/D/SP/EK. I think we can use it in the spell out with some switching around.

Shelby, if you want, I can start an i book tomorrow and finish it on either 8/6 or 8/7

message 896: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I can knock over another Agatha Christie quickly if we need it for NUCLEAR WEAPONRY author name. Otherwise I plan to read an Ann Cleeves but it's longer as is my other next read.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 7238 comments I'm going to be working on
The Resort for O and Forbidden which is short and works for NUCLEAR WEAPONRY author name

message 898: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I’m trying to finally finish my long book from the start of the challenge this week… but I’ve been sick since Sunday night so I haven’t really done anything other than sleep the last day and a half. 😭 hoping if I have a good period of being awake + meds kicking in that I’ll be able to read some more, but it’s hard to try to do anything that takes too much concentration right now (which that book does as it’s fantasy)

message 899: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments My sympathy, Kaley. I had a similar thing a few months ago. I slept most of day 1 but was able to read on and off after that. Even getting up to go to the toilet was exhausting!

message 900: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I've had a very slow start to the week, I'm doing some unexpected training this week so my audiobook time at work has been severely impacted. Working on my orange cover book but might be close to Friday when I get it done - doesn't look like we're super close to finishing out those tasks though so I'll keep plugging along in the mean time!
