Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Mini Update!

Hey Team! As I mentioned in my last update I did shuffle around some books for the mini today. The only spots we weren't able to fill were:

S60: 1.5-7.5 in a Series - Lucy has this claimed with The Grift of the Magi
S24: Nature - Snowtulip you had two Nature books claimed, but we only need the one and it doesn't matter which.

If you two can just give a quick acknowledgement that you're still planning to finish so we can get a sub if we need, that would be great.

Anyone else who had spots they were reading for - feel free to keep reading, but don't feel any pressure towards the deadline. Please don't take it personally, your pages still absolutely count and this was purely for us captains to have a smoother/not last minute scramble to get everything squared away - especially because I'll be out of town most of the weekend and not in a great position to do a big update.

Arena Battle #2

Also - keep in mind that we will need to start planning our second battle with District 13 soon. We aren't sure exactly when the first words will get announced by the Mods and District 13 will have the start of the chain, but I'm expecting some time this weekend or early Monday at the latest we will have to start work on that.

Just like last time we'll be overlapping a minimum 3 letters to form chains of book titles. Planning will go from the 15th-21nd and Reading can not start before the 22nd and needs to be complete by the 29th (you can see the exact start/end times for reading on the Timers tab!).

So if you want to be involved in that, make sure to pop in every once in a while to see where we are in planning!

Are we doing a supply drop this round?

message 612: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Yep - I've been talking with District 12 in the last couple of days. Neither of us need anything specific so we're planning on dropping books they can use to protect and that have all four options. I'll be looking probably this evening to see what we don't have assigned to a mini.

Correct! We should be able to start planning (though not yet reading!) for the next Arena Battle by Monday; the week to read those will start on the 22nd. And then we'll see another mini on August 1st that will last through the challenge end. Outside of those times though - it's whatever you want as long as you can finagle a way to make it fit into a category! :)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Round 2 Update

Hey team! Just did a big update, so everyone's books up to here are officially logged.

Susan - Can you make sure The Concrete Blonde has a read date added to it?

Please, please, please - I know a lot of us (myself included) are adding books that we plan to read without resources because we don't know what we'll find when we read; which is absolutely fine. BUT; please, going forward, try to remember to come back and fill those in when you mark books as read or add a read date to the spreadsheet. If you don't provide resource reasons, the captains have to either make something up or not count your book. We've been able to finagle this so far, but we have a much smaller scope to work from than you do when you've read a book so it's a huge help if you provide this info! :)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Arena Battle #2

The first titles for the second Arena Battle has been posted! Since we started the chain last round, we'll be waiting for District 13 to start the chain and send us over their first pick. The full rules for the challenge are posted here, but I'll do a little summary below.

We are chaining books by matching the last letters of a book's title with the first letter's of the next book; here's the beginning of our last battle chain as an example:

START: Middlegame
D3: American Dirt
D13: (The) Dirty Book Club
D3: (The) Lubetkin Legacy
D13: A Cyclists Guide...

• We have to overlap a minimum of 3 letters.
• We can overlap as many letters as we need.
• The fewer letters we overlap the better!
• Leading articles (a/the) can be used or ignored.
• We will be swapping back and forth with D13 for the chain (they pick, we pick, they pick, we pick,....)
• These books can not be started before challenge time (9AM UTC) on 7/22 and must be finished by challenge time on 7/29.
• We have until challenge time on 7/22 to plan, which as of now gives us about 10.5 hours to choose each book in the chain so if you want to be involved please make sure to check in regularly as we'll be trying to move pretty quickly through this.

Any questions? Let us know!

Shelby and I in the US are both busy today and it's about to be overnight for Ari in Australia. I'll be checking on the thread throughout the day but probably won't be much help outside of answering questions, etc. So - if we get a book from D13 during the day today and a few of you come up with options feel free to kick the chain back to the other team without waiting on us. Just copy and paste the running list (no need to worry about saving the links) and then link our next option at the bottom of the list and post in in District 13's Thread.

Hi, I know I'm a big problem to this because I was reading first, and figure out resources later. I can go back and put resources for all my books tonight. I'm off all day tomorrow so I don't have a bed time tonight!

I added date The Concrete Blonde

If you don't provide resource reasons,....

WHat does this mean? I had been putting page numbers in, but then noticed others weren't so I stopped.

Do you need page numbers and a partial quote?

If my booked is marked "moved to official spreadsheet" does that mean you have the required info?

If I left a section blank, it means I couldn't think of anything.

I'll check back; I can make any updates required tonight or tomorrow

message 623: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Thanks Susan! Your resources are fine. :) We had a few books that didn't have any information for any resources added - totally fine to leave things blank if the category doesn't apply.

Hi Susan. Have you read more Harry Bosch books? I’m rereading my way through them. In order this time because we bought them out of sequence. Love Harry! And the Bosch universe ones as well.

Susan A | 461 comments No. I just started the series. I enjoyed the first 3 and plan to continue. I need to figure out the timing for the other series I think I want to read them together

message 626: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments Yes the other books are tricky to fit into the timeline but most don’t see much of Harry. The Renee Ballard ones do because they work together when he’s pretty much retired. Mickey Haller has a bit of a connection but not a lot. I’m planning to reread the other series as separate entities.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Morning, team! No official word from D13 yet but they're looking at books that would leave us with:

Girls (RLS)
Things (NGS)
and
On Me (NME)

So if anyone wants to start looking for options, feel free! I'm going to make some breakfast and sit down to browse for ideas. :)

BUT if you find an option for three letters, which might be a challenge with these combos - don't post it here until we hear from them. I don't want that to influence their choice. ;)

message 628: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments They sure aren't going easy on us. I've been looking for some options and keep checking back to see if they've chosen yet. Can't wait to see what they pick.

Random question: When does this round end as far as just our normal books for resources? I'm nearing the end of Malibu Rising and now that it isn't being used for the mini (which is totally fine as I was going to read it anyway), I'm not sure if I should be trying to get it done quickly or trying to not finish until the new round starts. So I guess that really is a 2nd question...
1) When does this round end/the next round start?
2) Should we be trying to finish books if we are close, or wait until the start of the next round?

I'm still not really sure how the main challenge even works. I have no concept of how many books (or pages?) we need or are aiming for I guess.

message 629: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Oooo, good thinking Vicky. I'll be looking.

Just wanted to also stop by to say I don't think I'll finish anything else by the time round 2 ends. My only currently reading is far from finished (I've been reading it like since the challenge started lol) and I haven't started a new audiobook yet -- and since it's a Sunday I probably won't start anything new until it's getting close to bedtime, so won't be finishing anything tonight.

message 630: by Shelby (last edited Jul 14, 2024 09:01AM) (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments The answer to your question Ashley is that ultimately it doesn't matter in this case. There's not a new mini starting next week that holding it over would benefit us as with the Battle all books have to be started after the next round starts. So finish or don't it works either way. :)

Really the goal is just as many points as possible before the end of the game. There's a link in one of the first posts on this thread that links to the Challenge Status sheet which shows where all the teams are at. Most points "wins"

As for when this round ends there's a countdown timer on our tracking spreadsheet and we're sitting at about 17hrs.

message 631: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments @Ashley - This round ends at 9AM UTC Monday Morning - which is 5AM US-Eastern/2AM US- Pacific /7PM Aus-Eastern.

At this point we have everything complete for the mini, which was the only thing with a hard deadline, so it's a half of one/six of the other situation if you finish it for round 2 or round 3 because we'll get the same overall points regardless.

The next mini will start on August 1st and that's a time we might want to hold off finishing books depending on what that mini looks like - because having a quick boost at the beginning is really useful for the time sensitive parts! But from round to round it doesn't matter.

As far as the main challenge - it's just reading as much as we can! Based on what we all signed up for we were projected to read 350 books by this point in the challenge and we've read 416 which puts us at 118% which is awesome. :)

message 632: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Oops - I didn't see Shelby's post before I finished mine. My app is acting up (shocker I know!).

message 633: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Thank you both!

message 634: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments oof looks like they might be leaning towards "All Eyes On Me"

I haven't had any luck with NME or ON ME but I haven't looked too deeply.

We could look at titles that start with ON and have a second word that starts with ME. On media? On men? On meaning?

We could also do the same thing with first word SON second word starts with ME.

Or we go all the way back to Eyes on Me which would give them a taste of their own medicine but might also get us into more trouble if they decide to do the same. Also it's a huge hit on number of letters.

message 635: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Yeah I was trying On Meeting, On Mentoring,On Men, no such luck but I’ll keep looking lol

message 636: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I have one I could read but it is a novel in verse and I can't find a word count. The audio is 3 hours long though. My daughter is calling so I'll come back and link it soon.

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I linked my book here but then deleted because I didn't know if it was official yet. Let me know if it is okay to link the book or when we have a definite selection from them.

message 638: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments I think it's pretty safe to say that's what they're going with, while still not officially official.

message 639: by Shelby (last edited Jul 14, 2024 01:16PM) (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments What I've found so far...

Book I'm not linking as I believe it's the book Ashley might have been suggesting - Downside this is super limiting for them and we could end up in a battle of seeing how many people on a given team want to read the same book over and over again. Though there are a few books I've already seen that start using the 4th letter. And while I don't see a word count either I concur it is over 3hrs on audio just barely.

As far as the On Me idea, so far I've found...

On Merit

But I've by no means done an exhaustive search. There's a lot of potential words that start ME.

In some ways I think we all should think about how competitive we want to be this round. It's only 5 points on the line and we did win it the first round (I know, I know, I was one of the driving forces behind the competitiveness of the last round. But I also read a couple of books that I did not enjoy just for that.) Do we as a team want to care less about really trying to win again or do we just want to go for the book that's one we most want to read regardless of trying to trip them up?

message 640: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Honestly I'm absolutely fine with choosing a book we'd like vs trying to trip them up. The closest two to teams are ~30 points apart but most teams are at least 100 points apart so that 5 is definitely not making or breaking any rankings.

If we find a good option that ALSO trips them up, awesome. But we definitely had some people take one for the team last round and I don't want people to feel obligated to read a dud just for 5 points.

message 641: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments The N.M.E. is the one that I was offering to read. I have to read a novel in verse for another challenge and am not set on the one I have chosen so far, so I thought it would work out nicely. However, I could see where it might be too limiting. I wasn't choosing it to be competitive really in the sense that it would screw them over. I actually didn't think about that. I was just trying to pick something that kept our letters down and worked with my other challenge prompts... and was short because I'm not that fast of a reader.

With book club/buddy reads and the prompts I have for my other challenges, my options are just kind of limited (a novel in verse or a retelling) and I was excited that I found something that would work so I could participate in the battle. I am fine with sitting it out though if we'd rather go with something that allows us more flexibility in the long run. I'll just enjoy reading for the main challenge and hopefully be able to help out some with the mini. Because it starts at the beginning of the month, I can plan my choices for my prompts around it a little bit, so I have more flexibility.

That was probably way more explanation than required. Sorry.

message 642: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1982 comments Yeah that's the book I found as well. :) And hey if you're willing to read it and it fits for your other challenges I'm all for you going for it. It's then on them what they want to do. You found a book that fits and that's great. We're still waiting on official word anyway with what they're going to go with.

message 643: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Spreadsheet Addition

I made a not super fancy Battles tab on the spreadsheet - mostly because I didn't want to keep doing the math for how long we have left to plan and what that breaks down to in terms of turn around time per book that we're planning. (Look, I love a spreadsheet, okay?)

I have it locked for everyone expect the captains because these books will be set in stone as we pick them, so we'll add the info in as we select books. But it will still be a good reference for everyone to keep up with what's going on! :)

message 644: by Vicky (last edited Jul 14, 2024 02:54PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Ashley - totally fine if you want to read it (once we get an official post from D13 of course)!

I apologize if I came across dissuasive, it wasn't my intent. I know a few people read some absolute duds last battle round and don't want anyone to feel like they HAVE to take that on for the team. But if it's something you want to read, I'm absolutely on board! :)

message 645: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments I have a battle longevity question. If someone reads The N.M.E. do we think we’ll get stuck in a loop of that book back and forth unless someone goes with a supply drop book to get out of it? I suppose that with “The” at the beginning there is the possibility of finding something with ENME if needed in the future.

message 646: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments It's definitely possible, but the E changes the option from ONME to ENME which has a few options with Enmeshed.

I think it's unlikely we'll get stuck in too much of a loop vs breaking out to use the E, because it's not a SUPER accessible book. It's on Hoopla which is great for people that have Hoopla... but I don't think people are going to want to spend $5 to get it on Kindle. I think adding the E or requesting a supply drop would be more likely to happen.

Which is a good reminder that we DO have the option of using a supply drop to cover one extension letter of the overlap. So we could request a book that starts/ends with N and then do a ME book - if we do get stuck in the loop down the line.

message 648: by Ashley (last edited Jul 14, 2024 04:43PM) (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Let's put it this way: I am equally fine with reading The N.M.E. and not reading it. I had never heard of it before, but it sounds fairly interesting, and I do have Hoopla. I am not SUPER excited about it, so if someone finds something else or has something else that they really want to read and will potentially give us better options for future rounds, I will not be upset about NOT reading it... but I will not be upset about reading it either if we choose to go that route.
