Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Team Challenge - Book Games
>
District 3

I added a new tab "Shelter" to the tracking sheet for the new mini. A few things to note:
1. I put the Series Walls at the top, I think it would be wise of us to plan those first because a lot of the genres will come in naturally as we read.
2. For tasks I put #1-#8 in a series for the walls; they DO NOT have to be 1-8... they could be 2-9 or 12-19 if we wanted them to be, but I think 1-8 is going to be easier to manage. I'm perfectly fine with shifting this if we need to, but felt it was clearer to have some sort of concrete direction on the sheet.
3. Judging from what we've collectively read so far this challenge, it looks like NATURE and HORROR will be the genres we might need to aim for. Bonus - if you're going to be reading Starling House at the last minute (It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me) it is tagged Horror!
4. Like with the last round - let's keep it to a maximum of 3 claimed books until everyone has a chance to get some claims in!
5. And lastly, a request... when you're entering books finished during the time this mini is active, please add any qualifying genres AND series information to the spreadsheet in the "reason" tab. Just in case we need to do some shuffling - it'll be good to have the info handy! :)

At the end of the day it's only 5 points if we don't win; so definitely not a make or break situation.

And thanks Shelby and Snowtulip! :)"
Awesome my dear! Can you please just make sure you've added it to your shelves? :)"
Added all my books to the spreadsheet and shelves. Will update with more detailed information later.

Also, the end of the mini is July 15, correct? Just trying to figure out how many books I can commit to.

Will do Cindy. :)

If anyone's reading:
Starling House
The Wishing Game (I had this one claimed on the spreadsheet, but we can always move it)
The Secret Lives of Country Gentleman
Catching Fire
Theoretically we could fill our door up if we read one of each of them, and well we have people who've said they plan to read them on the spreadsheet. :)
Outside of those, you can find what teams have marked as shelter by going to their Team spreadsheets and scanning down for each book that's been added to the shelter resource in each round.
All of the teams sheets can be accessed from here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Same for District 12 . At Bertam's Hotel

Quick reminder about the door tasks - keep in mind that any books for these tasks need to be books that other teams have read. Please note on the spreadsheet which team has read the book so we don't have to go hunting. ;)

Sweet which I've already read but it's a contemporary romance just over 100 pages and is #7 in a series if anyone who can break apart standalone romance series wants to pick it up!

Ah! I didn't see this before.
Now for the door
Steal shelter books from other teams to make your door.
(This means reading a book another team has already read for their 'shelter' category.)
Get creative about how their book would be a door.
Is it a brown cover and therefore you are using it for your wooden door?
Does it have a door on the cover? That's obvious and not so creative, but, hey it works.
Does it have a character who is a builder? Great - get them to build your door!
You will need 4 books to complete your door.

I have quite a few series books too. Two are historical romances so cover 2 areas. Also have quite a few higher in the series numbering than 8 if we want do that for one section. Eg At Bertram’s Hotel is Miss Marple series #10

#1-6 - I have at least 5 options, more as you decrease in number
#7 - 2 options
#8 - 4 options
#9/10 - 2 options
#11 - 1 option
#12 - 3 options
#13 - 2 options
#15 - 1 option
#18 - 1 option
#21 - 1 options
This is just with the books I have on my most urgent TBR. :)

#1-8 at least 6 options
#9- 1
#10-1 but used for door
#13-1
#14-1
#15-1
#17-1
#19-1
#20-1
#21-2

8 - Elizabeth
9 - Shelby
10 - Jax
11 - Jax
12 - Jax
13 - Shelby
13.5 - Shelby
14 - Elizabeth
15 - Elizabeth
Unless someone has a book they'd like to toss in there that would fit as well. I know I could commit to reading all of what I would need to in that chain. But it only seems to be smart to build the higher chain if we have all the books to complete it. :) The lower chains are easier and need less planning ahead as there are more books people are tackling to fill the spots. This breakdown would have us each reading three in the chain.

8 - Elizabeth
9 - Shelby
10 - Jax
11 - Jax

I've got the books in hand and will start on it tonight/tomorrow.

I'm also just shy of the 50% mark in The Secret Lives of County Gentleman; so I'm going to listen to another section of that tonight and then it and Starling House will be some quick finishes for the mini in the next two days!
I'm also going to pick up Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver once my Hoopla borrows reset tomorrow; I've been meaning to reread it for YEARS and it's perfect for the nature slot.

I am no expert, so hopefully one of the captains will comment but I think we have to go by MPG.

Yep MPG.

I think of this usually when there's some sort of dual timeline, something like Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk.

Okay. Thanks. I’m leaving the last chapter till after deadline. Have two books paused before the end.

Me too. Getting a head start on one of the longer ones.

Welcome your new player Susan A to your team!
Susan's books started after Book Games began and finished July 1st or later may be used for this challenge.

I think that message above means any books I finished today and going forward work.
This is my shelf
NBRC Book Games
I generally read at least 10 books per week. I will be on vacation starting August 10 and am not likely to get much done.
My reading is mostly audiobooks. I have a few questions.
1. Is this how I find the default:
On the book's GR page, scroll down to More Editions
Under the pictures of the various versions of the book, click Show All ## Editions (## being the number of versions on GR)
Use the page count of the first book on the list that is not a large print book or an audiobook. (even if it is a non-English version?)
2. For tasks involving the book cover, do I use only the cover of the edition I read?
3. For tasks involving colors, do I use tineye? If not, who decides about the colors ?
Enough for no. I'm going to start reading through this thread and the all about thread.

Yes the more counts, but not the show all.

I think that message a..."
1. Yes, default is the first book on that list. Language wouldn't matter, I would think as we have people who do read other language books and that could be the default edition.
2. Yes, edition that you read.
3. We're not hard and fast on Tineye, it's a good guide, but it's a bit more of an eye test here. If it's questionable ask in the team thread and we can give feedback and if there's a real question we can take it to the captains thread for a final ruling.

So it looks like every book goes in the tracking tab with how it works for weapons, defense, shelter and food.
A book can also go in the mini. Which is the Shelter tab.
I filled in the two books I finished today. Please let me know if it looks right.

As I mentioned, I read mostly audiobooks. However, I just shelve whatever edition pops up. And specifically, I never shelve the audiobook because it doesn't list a page count and I don't like the way it looks.
Anyway...do I need to be putting the audiobook on the NBRC book games shelf? Can I just put the default there?
And which edition should link in the spreadsheet?

Hey team - quick reminder that all battle books must be finished AND logged on your read/challenge shelf in...
12 HOURS AND 22 MINUTES
(give or take a minute) from this post.
The timer for this is on the Timers tab of our tracking sheet, but you can also look and see how old this post is to get a closer idea of time.
If you're in the US this is 5am Eastern/2am Pacific, it's 9am UTC, and it's 7pm AEST for the Australian crew.
