Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments COUNTDOWN TO BATTLE END

Hey team - quick reminder that all battle books must be finished AND logged on your read/challenge shelf in...

12 HOURS AND 22 MINUTES

(give or take a minute) from this post.

The timer for this is on the Timers tab of our tracking sheet, but you can also look and see how old this post is to get a closer idea of time.

If you're in the US this is 5am Eastern/2am Pacific, it's 9am UTC, and it's 7pm AEST for the Australian crew.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments New Mini

I added a new tab "Shelter" to the tracking sheet for the new mini. A few things to note:

1. I put the Series Walls at the top, I think it would be wise of us to plan those first because a lot of the genres will come in naturally as we read.

2. For tasks I put #1-#8 in a series for the walls; they DO NOT have to be 1-8... they could be 2-9 or 12-19 if we wanted them to be, but I think 1-8 is going to be easier to manage. I'm perfectly fine with shifting this if we need to, but felt it was clearer to have some sort of concrete direction on the sheet.

3. Judging from what we've collectively read so far this challenge, it looks like NATURE and HORROR will be the genres we might need to aim for. Bonus - if you're going to be reading Starling House at the last minute (It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me) it is tagged Horror!

4. Like with the last round - let's keep it to a maximum of 3 claimed books until everyone has a chance to get some claims in!

5. And lastly, a request... when you're entering books finished during the time this mini is active, please add any qualifying genres AND series information to the spreadsheet in the "reason" tab. Just in case we need to do some shuffling - it'll be good to have the info handy! :)

Catsalive | 423 comments Has someone else got the Mafia Queen one covered in case? I don't have access to a copy.

message 504: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Not sure. It's on Kindle Unlimited if anyone wants to give it a go, but it's also 470+ pages so it'll be a tough one to crank out with a quickness.

At the end of the day it's only 5 points if we don't win; so definitely not a make or break situation.

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Awesome Cindy! I’ll keep an eye out as we get closer for your update so we can get it moved to the main spreadsheet. :)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I'm going to be reading The Wishing Game and I saw someone had it on the spreadsheet for door... so can we use it again for door if I also read it? I'm assuming if we have multiple people reading a book, we can use it multiple times for different categories but didn't know about repeating the same task.

Also, the end of the mini is July 15, correct? Just trying to figure out how many books I can commit to.

message 509: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Also, where do we look to see what books teams have used for shelter?

message 510: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 152 comments I finished my book if someone can please update the spreadsheet for me. I won’t have access to a computer for a couple days

Will do Cindy. :)

message 512: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments So as for the Door tasks - I'm still trying to figure out whether or not we can duplicate books, if we can I've found multiple teams that have put each of the BOM's marked as shelter.

If anyone's reading:
Starling House
The Wishing Game (I had this one claimed on the spreadsheet, but we can always move it)
The Secret Lives of Country Gentleman
Catching Fire

Theoretically we could fill our door up if we read one of each of them, and well we have people who've said they plan to read them on the spreadsheet. :)

Outside of those, you can find what teams have marked as shelter by going to their Team spreadsheets and scanning down for each book that's been added to the shelter resource in each round.

All of the teams sheets can be accessed from here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments I have a copy of Oh Pioneers! by Willa Cather which District 4 read for shelter. Rd 1 I think it was.

Same for District 12 . At Bertam's Hotel At Bertram's Hotel (Miss Marple #11) by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie which I'd prefer as I haven't read it yet. There are lots of doors in a hotel and the entrance door is on the cover!

No, we are not.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Shelter Mini: Door Reminder

Quick reminder about the door tasks - keep in mind that any books for these tasks need to be books that other teams have read. Please note on the spreadsheet which team has read the book so we don't have to go hunting. ;)

message 517: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Looking through my shelves for high in series books and I found:

Sweet which I've already read but it's a contemporary romance just over 100 pages and is #7 in a series if anyone who can break apart standalone romance series wants to pick it up!

Ah! I didn't see this before.

Now for the door
Steal shelter books from other teams to make your door.
(This means reading a book another team has already read for their 'shelter' category.)
Get creative about how their book would be a door.
Is it a brown cover and therefore you are using it for your wooden door?
Does it have a door on the cover? That's obvious and not so creative, but, hey it works.
Does it have a character who is a builder? Great - get them to build your door!
You will need 4 books to complete your door.

I have quite a few series books too. Two are historical romances so cover 2 areas. Also have quite a few higher in the series numbering than 8 if we want do that for one section. Eg At Bertram’s Hotel is Miss Marple series #10

message 520: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments I have a bunch of higher series books too if people want to do a higher # wall.

#1-6 - I have at least 5 options, more as you decrease in number
#7 - 2 options
#8 - 4 options
#9/10 - 2 options
#11 - 1 option
#12 - 3 options
#13 - 2 options
#15 - 1 option
#18 - 1 option
#21 - 1 options

This is just with the books I have on my most urgent TBR. :)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments These are books either on my TBR pile or should be and I have them all.

#1-8 at least 6 options
#9- 1
#10-1 but used for door
#13-1
#14-1
#15-1
#17-1
#19-1
#20-1
#21-2

Shelby (stang_lee) | 1981 comments Ok ladies if we wanted to do a higher series build, what if we did...

8 - Elizabeth
9 - Shelby
10 - Jax
11 - Jax
12 - Jax
13 - Shelby
13.5 - Shelby
14 - Elizabeth
15 - Elizabeth

Unless someone has a book they'd like to toss in there that would fit as well. I know I could commit to reading all of what I would need to in that chain. But it only seems to be smart to build the higher chain if we have all the books to complete it. :) The lower chains are easier and need less planning ahead as there are more books people are tackling to fill the spots. This breakdown would have us each reading three in the chain.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments Suits me.They're all books I want to read but other challenge books get in the way. That said, if anyone has a 7 to take the place of Time to Depart in the first list, that's fine.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments One of the ladies in my local bookclub hosted a weekend reading retreat this week and it was SO FUN and productive! I finished two books yesterday (unfortunately one I started reading in March so it doesn't count for the Book Games, but it felt so good to clear it off my currently reading shelf!) and knocked out 60% of Starling House today.

I'm also just shy of the 50% mark in The Secret Lives of County Gentleman; so I'm going to listen to another section of that tonight and then it and Starling House will be some quick finishes for the mini in the next two days!

I'm also going to pick up Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver once my Hoopla borrows reset tomorrow; I've been meaning to reread it for YEARS and it's perfect for the nature slot.

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 820 comments The book I’m reading is MPG marked Thriller which is where I’ve put it in the mini but it’s not thrilling at all. It’s quite unpleasant, really. It is contemporary though but not marked as such. Do we go by the MPG for these classifications?

I am no expert, so hopefully one of the captains will comment but I think we have to go by MPG.

I think of this usually when there's some sort of dual timeline, something like Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1978 comments Sorry I've been quiet the last few days. My dog had surgery to get a lump removed on Friday so my last few days have mainly been focused on trying to take care of the patient -- who doesn't seem to understand that he is a patient and doesn't get why he cannot run or jump around like he wants. As such my reading might be a little less this week until he's allowed to move about as normal, but then I should be back to my normal reading volume.

message 542: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments I was trying to finish one more book for a challenge by the end of the month... but I wasn't able to finish. Good news is, I should finish it today and now I can use it for our mini... so I added it there. I don't read many series, but I'm trying to see if there is something I can work into my plans. If not, I'll keep working on some of the genres.

Welcome your new player Susan A to your team!

Susan's books started after Book Games began and finished July 1st or later may be used for this challenge.

Susan A | 461 comments Hello team. This was a spur of the moment decision, so I am not at all up to speed on what is going on here. I'll read through it today, but feel free to give me directions.

I think that message above means any books I finished today and going forward work.

This is my shelf
NBRC Book Games

I generally read at least 10 books per week. I will be on vacation starting August 10 and am not likely to get much done.

My reading is mostly audiobooks. I have a few questions.

1. Is this how I find the default:
On the book's GR page, scroll down to More Editions
Under the pictures of the various versions of the book, click Show All ## Editions (## being the number of versions on GR)
Use the page count of the first book on the list that is not a large print book or an audiobook. (even if it is a non-English version?)

2. For tasks involving the book cover, do I use only the cover of the edition I read?

3. For tasks involving colors, do I use tineye? If not, who decides about the colors ?

Enough for no. I'm going to start reading through this thread and the all about thread.

message 545: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elig | 68 comments Question about MPG genres: do the ones after you click "more" count? Not the "show all"... but I think the "more" are included when you scroll down and look at the genres on the app. For example, when looking at Malibu Rising it adds a few more options, including literary fiction.

1. Yes, default is the first book on that list. Language wouldn't matter, I would think as we have people who do read other language books and that could be the default edition.
2. Yes, edition that you read.
3. We're not hard and fast on Tineye, it's a good guide, but it's a bit more of an eye test here. If it's questionable ask in the team thread and we can give feedback and if there's a real question we can take it to the captains thread for a final ruling.

Susan A | 461 comments THank you.

So it looks like every book goes in the tracking tab with how it works for weapons, defense, shelter and food.

A book can also go in the mini. Which is the Shelter tab.

I filled in the two books I finished today. Please let me know if it looks right.

message 550: by Susan A (last edited Jul 01, 2024 12:30PM) (new)

Susan A | 461 comments Another question ---

As I mentioned, I read mostly audiobooks. However, I just shelve whatever edition pops up. And specifically, I never shelve the audiobook because it doesn't list a page count and I don't like the way it looks.

Anyway...do I need to be putting the audiobook on the NBRC book games shelf? Can I just put the default there?

And which edition should link in the spreadsheet?
