They didn't work out and the girl went to another country? I'm not sure but the boy followed her and they somehow end up with each other. I remember a scene where they confront each other on 4th of July or something and at the start of the story, the boy is like miserable and the girl is concerned. Something like that. I read this book way back 2015 if I'm not mistaken. Please help me! I badly want to re-read this series. :-(

Another scene I remember is they become roomies after the boy followed her in another country and they have 2 other friends. I really hope this helps. There's just bits and pieces of what I remember from this book.
Also, I think this series has 3 installments.
Is it the Mortal Instruments series? City of Bones? By Cassandra Clare. Perhaps the "country" she went to was Idris, the Shadowhunter place.
