SOLVED. Funny Fantasy book about a boy who runs a dragon slaying scam and later becomes king. [s]

It starts with a king sneaking out to a tavern and telling the story of how he became king. he used to be a commoner and did something like woodworking or soapmaking? He joins up with an older guy who had scammed his village with knuckle bones claiming they were holy relics of a saint, and they start running a dragon slaying scam where they get alligator heads and go to different kingdoms pretending to have killed dragons and asking for payment. Then an actual dragon shows up and they don't know what to do. The main character's name starts with a C I think. I read this around the mid 2010s and it was relatively new I think because my friend had got me a signed copy.
