Reading Mouse (readingmouse_21) | 123 comments For me it was my brother, he tried to make me read a series he really liked when he was my age and finally convinced me to read it. I was in 3-4 grade at the time and the series was Wings Of Fire.

evlove | 89 comments I was going to school and bored in the car so i started looking for random audio books. I settled on Fairytale by Stephen King and ended up picking up the physical book halfway through and havent put down books since. Good question!

Abby E. | 69 comments When I was very young, I saw a friend reading Narnia; and I thought that it was cool (very aesthetic). So, I grabbed a book from home and started reading. I wasn't finished with the first page I got bored. Turns out Pride and Prejudice is not for first time readers. (Also, english is my second language and was still learning it.) I haven't touched a book since then. I didn't also know there were genres. I thought there were only just classics. So, fast forward to highschool. Someone loved twilight so much she started an unofficial bookclub. it's just us during recess sitting in a circle while she tells us about it. I was hooked. A friend of mine introduced me to wattpad (back when it was new and cool) and I started reading. Then I found Sasha A. and she introduced me to books.

message 8: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) My fourth grade teacher read aloud to our class and I was mesmerized with The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. I read that series as a new adult. I think the first series I would have read was Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby and Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley Twins.

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments I already read a lot when I was 6 years old. But those books were rather tame.
What really turned me into an avid reader was the Famous Five series of books by Enid Blyton. So adventurous and fascinating, with castles, caves, underground passages, sunken boats and hidden treasures.
The three older brothers of my best female friend lent me their old Famous Five books and I was hooked.

I want to say one of my earliest memories was probably the first time in elementary school we had a class trip to the library, I was maybe in 2nd or 3rd grade and I fell in love. I also remember always getting excited when the teacher would hand out those scholastic order forms and I'd run home super excited to get money to order new books.
The first two series I got into were

Teen Witch by Megan Barnes

and

Sweet Valley High by Francine Pascal.

I actually felt nostalgic a while ago and repurchased The first 3 books of Teen Witch and my youngest daughter and I were able to bond over it. While tempted to do the same for Sweet Valley High, there are just too many, lol.
As an adult I'd say the series that got me back into reading were

The Darkest Power Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong

and

The House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast

I got to share these beauties with my Oldest daughter and now my youngest also love the House of night series.

Vedaant Ravikar | 2 comments In my school, in 5th grade, we used to read this book together as a class called Shadow by Michael Morpurgo. I absolutely fell in love with his books, and for the rest of grade 5, I read practically only Morpurgo books. My favorite one is private peaceful which is in my opinion the greatest book of all time.

message 14: by Meagan (new)

Meagan (meaganz) | 98 comments I didn't really read growing up other than assigned school books. But I recently have gotten into reading since becoming a mom and now it's one of my favorite hobbies! I am open to mostly all genres :)

Cassandra 🍁☕️📚 (blondie2611) | 151 comments My parents got my brother and I to read a lot when we were kids. Read a lot of Goosebumps and Babysitters Club books. I always looked forwards to the book fairs at school.

message 19: by Laura (new)

Laura Jane | 26 comments Nancy Drew! Idk if anyone remembers but they had a series in the early 2000s where her and her friends are younger so I related a lot more to those when I was around 7ish but gradually moved up to the original series because my mom had the whole collection lol and I've been obsessed with mysteries since.

Harry Potter would be my other one, I know I know thats every 90s kid's favorite book series but they also inspired me to write a lot more.

message 20: by Reading Mouse (new)

Reading Mouse (readingmouse_21) | 123 comments I’m not a 90skid but Harry Potter is still one of my favorites 😁❤️

message 21: by Jan (new)

Jan | 5 comments My mother set strict bed times for us kids. We could go to sleep or read. I've been reading ever since.

message 22: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Dial | 27 comments The series I enjoyed were exciting and adventurous; I often recommend The Dragons of Pern by Anne McCaffrey and The Ðarkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley. They are perfect for teenage girls as they feature strong female characters in situations and places you didn't often see back when I was a teenager, the 1980s!

message 23: by Reading Mouse (new)

Reading Mouse (readingmouse_21) | 123 comments Haha before my brother made me read I would have just slept lol
You should thank your mom Jan

message 24: by Rebecca (new)

message 25: by Evy (new)

Evy | 2 comments My mom taught me to read younger then most kids. I remember absolutely loving it and showing off to all my friends and cousins who couldn’t read yet. My mom loved to read as a child and still does. I love my mom for getting me into this passion 🫶🏻

Emma | 112 comments I started reading when I was around 4, but what really got me into reading was Warriors. I absolutely LOVED those books, and I'd wake up early in the morning just to have time to read them before school, and then read them during school, and then after school... I have many fond memories :).

message 34: by max (new)

max (wylans) | 3 comments I've enjoyed reading for as long as I can remember so it's hard to pinpoint what got me started, but when a friend of mine recommended me The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater in freshman year of highschool it genuinely changed my life. I still love this series with all my heart

message 35: by Sam (new)

Sam K (zutara123) | 251 comments My dad use to read to me as a little kid all the time and is who got me into reading. He reads a lot himself. One of the books he read to me was The Hobbit (which is also one of his favorite books) when i was about 10. That was the first book i become obsessed with. I've since reread it several times.

message 36: by Line_reads (new)

Line_reads | 1 comments I liked reading when I was i child. Then reading became "uncool" and I stoped. In high school I was struggling with english (not my first language) and a friend of mine started to read "The lightning theif" out loud for me and later i borrowed the book to finish it. Thats how I started reading in english. Now I pretty much only read in english 😅

message 44: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Dixon | 11 comments I loved reading as a kid, but I stopped reading as much when I got to high school and college. When I began my teaching career, I had a student tell me about the “Fablehaven” series. Every week that student, as well as other students, would talk with me about the books and I loved listening to them talk about the books. After a few months, one of the students bought me the first book in the series (I learned they saved up their allowance money to do so), so of course I read it right away. To this day, it is one of my favorite book series and every time I read the books they always remind me of that group of students. It is a very happy memory for me and got me to love reading books again :-) .

message 47: by Jessie (new)

Jessie McElwee | 2 comments It was my elementary school librarian. I honestly don’t even remember her name now. But I was definitely one of those kids that hung out in the library as much as I could just because I wasn’t really a social butterfly. She would bring me over books to help keep me company. And I’m thankful everyday because of her!

message 48: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 The school library was my favorite place to be in grade school. I loved reading because it transported me to new places. I can't recall the first book I read. The first series was likely to have been Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 exploits. I had a picture of Sean Connery in full color wearing only a pair of swim trunks in all his hairy glory sprawled in a lawn chair beside a pool. My father went ballistic and took it away from his little kid. He worried about my ogling such "pornography" and how I would be influenced. I guess in retrospect he should have been concerned.

message 49: by Ailyn (new)

Ailyn (cosmoslyn) local library has recs, i love them

message 50: by Melody (new)

Melody Daenshie (melodydaenshie) | 5 comments I don't remember a specific instance. I didn't have the most loving parents, so reading was escapism for me. Luckily the mother had The Hobbit and A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, so I went from there, despite how complicated they were to read.

I think I read Where the Red Fern grows at 8-10 years of age, and I uh...do NOT recommend that at all.
