It starts with the boy successfully stealing a pie made with berries so sweet only the king is allowed to eat them. He eats the pie on a wall outside the kingdom with a bunch of animals that were attracted by the sweet smell. The boy has the ability to sacrifice something for a wish to come true. He tries first to sacrifice his scar since he never liked it anyways but it doesn’t work since he doesn’t place value on it. This happens while he’s fleeing from soldiers for one of his many thefts. He eventually sacrifices his boots (that magically change size to fit him as he grows) and later his journal that is also a book of recipes. There’s something about jumping off the end of a bridge that leads to a cliff and has leaves carved with prayers hanging on it. He also encounters a blind woman who’s learned to See as he’s learned to Listen. Towards the beginning of the book he saves a woman who was going to be hit by a cart and gets his debt erased by her father.

Is the boy a teenager or a younger child?

I read it sometime when I was in elementary school so maybe between 2010 and 2013. I think the boy was a teenager not a child, definitely old enough to be making conscious choices, but I’m not 100% sure. Set in a fantasy world.
