Yes, I liked the way she voiced all the characters.

In Kabul, separated by a century, Rahima and her great-great-grandmother Shakiba are both trying to find their way in a world that is ruled by men; where women are valued only for their ability to provide male children.

This dual timeline novel introduced me to the ancient Afghan custom of bacha posh. This is a practice that allows a family with only daughters to change a child to a "son" in dress, manner and name until such time that they reach marriageable age. It also included the decision of the king to have women dressed as men to be guards for his harem.

An eye-opening story that was heartbreaking and difficult to bear witness to, yet also beautiful with moments of joy and hope. I am truly struggling to find the words to adequately express my emotions after reading this novel. It will stay with me. 4* The Pearl That Broke Its Shell
