The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas
Pages: 487
How It Fits: Elena Armas debut novel published February 23 2021
Date Read: 11/5
Rating: 4*

Review
This was a slow burn book with two very stubborn, strong willed characters. Catalina has to return to Spain to attend her sister’s wedding, but due to events from her past she doesn’t want to turn up along and seemingly single. Aaron her division leader offers to be her date a concept she is not to happy with but during a call to her mother inadvertently agrees to let Aaron accompany her. I really liked the way Aaron was always looking out for Catalina and how she slowly came to realise that what she thought was a fake relationship was slowly becoming real as she realised exactly to what lengths he would go to make sure her needs were met, including taking a crash course in Spanish to speak to her grandmother. As with all HEA novels there were bumps in the road that led to Catalina questioning whether they were destined to be together, but they got there in the end. For a debut novel this was a good read.

I do enjoy the relationship between Lord John Grey and Jamie. I forgot some of what happened in this one, which is why I decided to reread it before jumping back into Outlander with Drums of Autumn. I do really love Jamie. I don't think there could be a bad book when he's in it. I also really like Grey. I do wish we got more romance with him in these books though. He deserves it

Review: Cute, but OTT book about a man who is blackmailed into porn and falls in love with his 3 coworkers who are already in a relationship. Throw in a bad manager/owner, a skeevy ex-boyfriend and a mom who is sick and this is cute, sweet and very sexy. Add in some light BDSM. I enjoyed it, but a bit OTT for me.

Week #4
Book: Northern Lights by Nora Roberts
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I'm a Nora Roberts fan, so I'm not sure how this one got by me when it was released. While it was a little long, I enjoyed the story, I didn't quite figure out who the killer was and the setting was interesting as I was just in Alaska this fall. The MCs did a little of a gender swap as the story is told from the view of the MMC, and the FMC was the "not going to commit" type.

Review:
So here's the thing. This is my third book by this author. The writing is good and it does keep me engaged. But here's where they are starting to lose me...they are all basically the same but with different characters.

Please explain why all the FMC's in these books are all kidnapped towards the end. OR how about why do all the MC's all feel like they aren't good enough, or that the other person will be better off without them? Because it's happened in all of these books.

I have really liked Tucker. But in this book, he's not that alpha male, I'm going to protect you character he's supposed to be. Oh he protects Jensen, but then we have to listen to his inner dialogue about how she'll be better off without him. He's not good enough for her. Then he compares himself to his dad and does the wonderful third-act breakup. UGH!!!

Jensen does the same thing. She's had two relationships and now all of a sudden she has bad taste and is destined to be single for the rest of her life, lol.

I'm very nervous to finish this series. I want one of these books to have a character that's strong and doesn't let their past engulf their entire life and thoughts. Or one that fights for what they want and doesn't care what anyone thinks. But I'm already seeing we are going to have the self doubt issues with Kennedy, and I'm nervous Cain is going to fall down he same path that Walker, Liam, and Tucker have so far.

The only problem is Melanie hates Christmas. As she settles into the cottage the local sheriff turns up who takes it upon himself to show Melanie that Christmas isn't all that bad. There are very sweet moments through the book as Melanie discovers the true meaning of Christmas as they head towards their HEA

Book: The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston
Rating: 4.5
Review: I initially had some trouble getting into this one -- the first few chapters spend too much time in the FMCs head with at times too much detail. But once the "slipping" started, it was a fun, entertaining, sweet romance. I feel like this would be a good palate cleanser after a really intense book.

I am clearly in the minority, but I didn't like it. This author isn't for me.

The plot idea was okay, but it was predictable. It was a case of been there, done that, so nothing was exciting or new. Troy's mom was annoying. Who knick-names their kid "bong bong"?

The connection between these two was definitely from forced proximity. Once they were rescued, I had a hard time finding this connection. Seemed forced again. The epilogue is where you finally start to think, oh maybe these two should be together.

Review: Cute Bi-awakening story of a 40ish widower with a 13-year old daughter who meets a 40ish (gay) interior designer. Through their meeting til the end of the story this is a thoughtful book about a guy who's wife dies and he's just trying to do his best. In an attempt to do that he buys an old home and hires Andrews's company to fix it up. Through the ups and downs of falling for a "straight" man to meeting the guys family (including in-laws) and friends it was done very thoughtfully.

I can't wait to read about the other guys from ADJ.

Review: This is the second book in an off shoot of a 7 book series. I keep thinking that the author will run out of stories to tell as the setting in a small town in the Yukon is fairly limited. But this new settlement, with new people, and new adversaries for the larger story arc is pretty fun! I am very attached to the MCs, so that does add some to my enjoyment.

This was an enjoyable take on the shifter romance genre. Nix is escaping an abusive past where her special ability is a closely guarded secret. Thinking she could hide her ability at college she soon realises that she has landed in a world of shifters and has to learn to trust her new family to survive. There was a lot of character development in here, which I hope continues through the series. It was good to hear the different POVs of the main characters as the story progressed. The only fault I found was the ending felt a little rushed.

Review: This was a pretty well done childhood friends to lovers romance with a little bit of suspense thrown in for extra drama. I liked the 2 main characters although I never really got a good explanation of why they were denying they were more than friends. There were a few too many "bad guys" which made it difficult to follow the romance at times. I do love the MMC's family -- the siblings each get their own book in the series.

Review:

Jamie has moved back to his hometown to help his mother. He is a goalie for the professional hockey team, and learned fairly early on that he couldn't count on anyone but himself and his mom. When he rescues a dog, he needs someone to look after it while he is away on road games, and while he's busy with his career. Enter Pippa: the girl of his teenage dreams. Pippa has been kicked around a little bit lately by her ex, and needs a job so that she can get off her sister's couch while she waits to apply on a marketing job opening up. Taking care of Jamie's dog is her way in, and the fact that she had a crush on him doesn't enter in to the fact that she is leery of people on the fame wagon.

I liked Jamie and Pippa and how supportive they were of each other. There were few moments that didn't make sense or absolutely wouldn't happen, but overall, I enjoyed it.

Review:

Emmy returns to her hometown when she finds that she can't do her job anymore. It is never meant to be anything more than temporary while she figures out what to do or how to overcome her obstacles, because teenage Emmy couldn't not wait to leave. One of the first people that she runs into (literally) is Luke, her oldest brother's best friend. Emmy thought Luke was kind of hot when she was younger, but didn't like his actions. When Emmy finds out that Luke has changed and become a responsible citizen, she is intrigued. Then Luke helps her figure things out, and Emmy can't stop thinking about him.

I enjoyed this. Emmy and Luke were very supportive of each other (once Emmy got over the fact that Luke had matured and wasn't the perpetual teenage boy of her memories). I liked the interactions with her family and finding her place in the world and her family. It was also nice to see someone who didn't "have" to stay home once she returned to it, and to see a character who is neurodiverse.
