Starting now... each book, lately, kinda feels like Halo, with Master Chief / Duncan Idaho being awakened from cryostasis / cloning vats :D

Are we continuing past Frank Herbert and into the Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Sullivan era?

There are 2 more main series entries, then many companion trilogies/series... at this point, I feel like I dehyped myself enough before continuing past books 1-2, to not feel the disappointment that megafans do, and just enjoy them on their own meandering philosophical merits... we'll see if that changes in the post-Frank era, since I heard the Brian & Kevin books don't read quite the same...

All this talk of (view spoiler) is jarring, given their meaning these days...

Read half last night... these go down so easy...

Doesn't feel like a finale, really, for all some people talk like Frank Herbert finished his series and Brian & Kevin just revived it... maybe I'm projecting, since I know more content exists?

Anyway, (view spoiler)

And done... that wasn't really a finale... google shows a 7th novel was in the works when Herbert died, and Brian & Kevin used the outline they found to write Hunters & Sandworms in the 00s... altho wikipedia also says those books include storylines started in their own many prequel trilogies (which I think play more with the Butlerian Jihad & the war against the machines that led to a refusal to use computer technology and the rise of mentats?)...

Anyway, bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm interested to hear if we're planning to continue as a group, with 7-8 and any of the prequels...

That sketchy sex scene everybody complains about online and we discussed in the previous thread, kinda reminded me of some of the rape scenes in Black Jewels, to break female witches (gender-swapped)...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments I'm running about a week or more behind on BRs right now... will be along eventually.

I'm curious to try the Brian books, but would have to research where to start... I don't think I'd want to go on to "book 7" straight away because I don't think it would be a book 7... I've heard Brian's books are much more mainstream SF action and very different in tone from his father's...

I think we also need context to Brian & Kevin's interpretation of the Butlerian Jihad/etc, before continuing, since the machines become more prevalent in the story... I think they're the Enemy the Honored Matres fled back to Arrakis/etc...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Finished! I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, though I kind of zoned off for the latter half... (view spoiler)

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Yes, I am totally on the "underdog" side at this point. I hate what the Honored Matres are doing! Killing billions of people just because they can! And all the pointless torture!!!

However, my dislike for Duncan is also growing. I am tired of the juvenile view that in order to be my own person I have to rebel and hurt those who are trying to incorporate me in their culture... This is why I didn't like him before either... I guess, what truly bothers me is that he was sold to us as this loyal and noble character in the first two books, and since he has been constantly looking for a way to betray those he should be loyal to. That disloyalty is what brought the world to this state too...

I am not yet sure how I feel about the "guilt" that the Jews should be feeling here ... It smacks a bit of prejudice, but I am being open minded:)))

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I am interested in continuing, however you guys think is the best way... I am only 25% in this one, but I should be done by tomorrow...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I ended this one with the same feelings I started it with... (view spoiler)

I still love the series and am looking forward to continuing!

Nirkatze | 20964 comments I was doing some digging, and if we wanted to continue with the Brian Herbert books, it looks like it breaks down like this:

Prelude to Dune Trilogy
Published 1999-2001
Chronicles the events that lead up to the first book.
1. House Atreides (Aug 10) [link]
2. House Harkonnen (Sept 10) [link]
3. House Corrino (Oct 10) [link]

The Caladan Trilogy
Published 2020-2022
Takes place after House Corrino but before Dune.
1. Dune: The Duke of Caladan
2. Dune: The Lady of Caladan
3. Dune: The Heir of Caladan

Heroes of Dune Trilogy
Published 2008-2023
Fills in gaps between the original Dune books
0. Princess of Dune (2023) (follows the lives of Irulian and Chani before Dune)
1. Paul of Dune (2008) (picks up right after the end of Dune)
2. The Winds of Dune (2009) (picks up right after Dune Messiah)

The Legends Trilogy
Published 2002-2004
Takes place millennia before Dune--documenting the war that caused the suspicion of machines in the first place.
1. The Butlerian Jihad
2. The Machine Crusade
3. The Battle of Corrin

Schools of Dune
Published 2012-2016
Picks up close after the Battle of Corrin, continuing with the history of the Dune universe. Also said to be the basis of the upcoming HBO series...
1. Sisterhood of Dune
2. Mentats of Dune
3. Navigators of Dune

Dune Sequels
Published 2006-7
Picks up after the end of Chapterhouse: Dune and FINALLY continues the story--based on "Dune 7" manuscript, and incorporating details from the Butlerian Jihad onwards... GR calls them Dune #7 & #8
1. Hunters of Dune
2. Sandworms of Dune

There's a lot of discussion on how to read them best... Y'all know I'm a chronological person, but I know others prefer publication...

I have no idea the best plan... altho some people say publication order is best, if only because the authors get better at dialogue/writing as they go, and the earliest written books are pretty bad... so going in chronological order is gonna lead to a very topsy turvy reading experience... oldest, newest, old, older, new, old

July 10th has come and gone… we g out distracted and never finalized our plans for continuing…

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I was also waiting for you guys to decide. I will go however you choose

I think part of the problem is it's the 3 of us... I'm generally a publication order person, with few exceptions... or at least more willing to go with recommendations from online/in-the-know people... Nirkatze is chronological order... and there's not tie-breaker...

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments I'll go with publication order...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Timelord Iain wrote: "I think part of the problem is it's the 3 of us... I'm generally a publication order person, with few exceptions... or at least more willing to go with recommendations from online/in-the-know peopl..."

I'm chronological order--though I know you meant that, lol.

The order I put in that list was kind of a morphed publication and chronological that kept the trilogies together...

I hate breaking up series unless there's chronological overlaps.

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Though either way, we'd be starting with the Prelude to Dune Trilogy, so we could just start with that and then duke it out later. No pun intended.

Kicking the problem to November… I like it… we can schedule prelude for the next 3 months whenever works for you guys…

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Works for me:)

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Keep the 10th? If so, I'll get around to those requests today or tomorrow.

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Tenth is perfect!

Starting August 10th or last week on July 10th?... I probably wouldn't mind skipping a month, being so behind on everything...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Let's say August, Sept, Oct for this trilogy, then maybe skip another month and start in December for the next one...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments Whichever one we choose.

Sounds like a plan... just dropped Songs of Chaos, and might have to drop Verania (options for things to drop I haven't already started are growing slim... I don't want to drop anything in the middle if I can avoid it, and I don't want to drop He Who Fights With Monsters, since LitRPGs/Cultivation/Xianxia stories have been my go-to slump-dodgers, these days)...

Nirkatze | 20964 comments You've gotta do what you've gotta do... You're still planning on continuing Kushiel & Black Jewels with me next month though, right?

lol... afaik, yea...

My reading ebbs and flows... dipped in April/May, then surged in June, and now here I am in July... will know my situation next month better next month...

Things also tend to smooth out for me in the 2nd half of the month, since like 66-75% of my BRs seem to happen in the first half of the month...

I could also cut Mage Errant, but I've been trying to keep that one on my schedule... and the more I think about it, the more I think I can just cut InCryptid & Orphan X if needed, and just talk with BR readers without actually re-reading...

There's always the Cheaters Last Option: start everything, then leave it hanging until you feel like it... works best if you return before you need to start the next book in the series :D

Nirkatze | 20964 comments LOL Well I'm glad you're still planning on reading those with me! Also definitely recommend Mage Errant, it's super cute and satisfying so far.

Prelude to Dune Trilogy has been requested and I'll put the links in my big post when they're live.
