The Instructor is an action-packed domestic terrorism thriller by T. R. Hendricks. The main character is retired Marine Force Recon and SERE instructor Derek Harrington. He has PTSD and ekes out a living with a wilderness survival school. He needs to earn more to support his ex-wife Kim and son Michael, and to get his dad into a care facility.

He's teaching a class in outdoor survival when one of the screwup students offers Derek cash to meet his boss. The boss, Marshall, leads some sort of right wing conspiracy group. He tells Derek he has formed a refuge, called Sanctuary, and wants him to build a quick reaction force to protect it. Derek refuses, but crises back home forces his hand. He contacts a friend in the FBI who wants him to go undercover as an informant.

There are a lot of descriptions of guns and survival techniques and the first part of the book was a little slow as Derek works in the field with the men breaking them down and rebuilding them as a team. But the final chapters made up for it with a lot of tension, double-crosses and non-stop action.

I listened to the audio narrated by Jay Snyder. He did an amazing job and I think I enjoyed the story more because I listened rather than read. I already have a hold on the next book in the series, The Infiltrator: A Derek Harrington Novel, out next month.
