Richaar | 133 comments Do you believe that reading a book when you're not in the mood for it can affect your rating? Do you think that if you'd read that book at the right time, that you would've rated it more? Or do you think the rating and your opinion wouldn't change?

Yes I agree with all that. I have been wondering why I have been getting in so many reading slumps lately. I think a lot of it has to do with picking the wrong book at the wrong time or the wrong mood. So definitely yes.

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments I'm always in the right mood for any kind of book. I never experienced a reading slump (but plenty of lousy books which other people praised).

Natasha | 136 comments I definitely have picked up certain books and struggled to get into them, put them down, only to pick them up at a later date and loving them. For me, the right book, at the wrong time, is a consideration. Most of the time, anyway.

Tarynla☾ | 80 comments Definitely. Honestly I rate books how I feel in that moment, wait, and return to it later with an updated rating. Sometimes I do a reread to see if I truly like it or hated it. I'm also a mood reader so there are times where I just put the book down, read something else, and come back to it later. I get into reading slumps all the time. I read small books like poems or novellas to help get me out of it.

Additionally on this topic, I still love reading YA books and there are times when I think I would have loved this so much if I was younger. There were several books where I thought this deserves a 5 out of 5 but I wasn't in love with it because I couldn't relate to the plot. I always think in these cases " right book, wrong time."

Joudel (joudels) | 3 comments Yes I recently realized that I am a mood reader, I didn’t realize it was possible until recently. If I finish reading a fantasy I can’t jump into a mystery/thriller.

Malissa (malissa1578) | 163 comments I'm a mood reader. If I am not in the mood for a book I won't read right then and generally come back to it when I am in the mood for it. Otherwise, I do see all of that happening.

Kindle Jenner | 90 comments 100%. Sometimes I’ll stop reading a book cause I realize I’m just not in the mood for this particular book at this moment. But then I’ll pick it up later and enjoy it. 🤷‍♀️

Definitely, If I get in a reading funk and just force myself to read I don't enjoy the book therefore what I do is either reread a book I did enjoy or listen to a favorite audiobook so I can give an honest review. But this is with all things in life, example I don't cook if I don't feel like cooking or my food comes out gross. lol

Linda (lindadixon678) | 10 comments Read Salem's Lot while camping in a remote location. Got spooked and swore off scary books for a while after that. It didn't last.

message 14: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Sommers | 11 comments I have to be in the right mood for the book. I keep a variety in my TBR stack so I can choose the right next read.

♤Lizzy♤ (Inactive) | 200 comments Yes! I read the first 50 pages of WOFTDP (Wings Of Fire, The Dragonet Prophecy) when I was younger and I really didn't like it. But my parents bought me the rest of the series so after awhile I read it. And loved it so, yes. I do think so.

message 16: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 8 comments I do think sometimes depending on the genre and where my mental health is, it is a factor on if I will be reading the book at that time or not :)

message 17: by Gyan (new)

Gyan K I do agree that this phenomenon exists. I attempted to read lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch and dnf’d it after 50 pages thinking the writing was pretentious, the time jumps jarring and unnecessary, and it just wasn’t holding my interest. I picked it up again a year later from my local library and enjoyed it.

Sarah Lehman (sdelgado8404) | 116 comments Absolutely! A book could be incredible, but if I'm not in the right mood for it, I won't enjoy it

aubrey౨ৎ₊˚⊹ | 12 comments the do over for me! I feel like I would like the book so much more if I read it at a different time

Violet Sorrengail | 66 comments Matched, a dystopian romance, I just wasn't feeling it and I wanted to read other things

Kameswara | 3 comments Shadow of the wind, Picked it up 2 years ago during 12th grade study pressure, so nothing got to my head (took me 3 months to read 300 pages bruh, and dnf.....then I picked it up again last June, after exams, and from start to finish, I was obsessed! Done with it within a week <3 and it's one of the best books I've read in my life. A literary treasure !

message 22: by Jo (new)

Jo Kerr | 76 comments Yes! And I’m sure this does affect ratings/reviews.

I know we all like to try and stay objective in our ratings but at the end of the day a review is a personal, subjective thing so is bound to be affected and influenced by our feelings as we read a book. If it didn’t hit home at that point in time we won’t be engrossed and would therefore review based on that IMHO…
