Group Read: Guards! Guards!

I thought we were reading The Light Fantastic! I already got that boook out. Now I'll have to get the other oone too! (Not a terrible fate, I admit.)

And so we begin with Carrot's arrival.

Well, I'm rereading The Light Fantastic, after some 20 years or more, i think. I'm enjoying it a great deal, and I'm recognizing many brief, minor mentions that I know TP later developed into major themes, and even, in some cases, entire books. So much is in this book! Has anyone else noticed it?

For bonus points we should also play the first Discworld game for anyone who can their hands on it ☺. Just in case anyone doesn't know it's basically Guards! Guards! but with Rincewind as the protagonist.

I was actually referring to the computer game. Is the protagonist in the board game Rincewind or Carrot? If there is a protagonist?

Not Rincewind then. He would never join the Watch.

This must be one of my favourite books, hands down. I read this in my early teens, so it's been more than 20 years since I first read it. Then came the Discworld game which made me like it even more.

Given this I've really grown to have Carrot as my favourite character!

I think I actually started off with Guards! Guards! as my first Watch book, so I was good chronologically :)

Back to Carrot, what's your take on the whole (view spoiler)[King of Ankh-Morpork thing? It seems to be slowly dying out as the Watch series progresses, to the point where I'm gradually wondering if this is akin to the nobility of Nobby where this status may be contentious. It was an interesting plot device in Guards! Guards! (you know, country boy who just happens to be King), where STP may have thought to let it die out as the series matured. (hide spoiler)]

there are more allusions to his being (view spoiler)[the rightful king (hide spoiler)] as the series goes on, it's just often not relevant.

That is true, for example in (view spoiler)[Vimes's elevation to Duke (hide spoiler)], but as you say it gets less and less relevant. I haven't read the very latest in the series (Snuff) so I'm not sure if there are more references there.
