SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. Children's Picture Book 1970s about a dragon and (I think) a boy. I don't recall the plot but just the memorable illustrations: pen and ink drawings using only black(?), orange, purple, and green. [s]

Diane (tapestrythreads) | 3 comments In 1976-77 at age 11 I was living in the Philippines attending an American school for missionary kids. Our library was well-stocked with typical books that would be in an American school (I assume). We had a long bus ride, and when we were bored, on library day we would pass around the little kids' library books. One of the favorites was a book about a dragon and (I think) a boy, and probably a town, but the plot wasn't memorable. I just loved looking at the illustrations.

I remember being impressed that although at first glance the book seemed to be illustrated in color, in fact there were only three colors used: green, orange, and purple. I was fascinated that these created a magical effect, and the colors made me happy. This color combination has stayed with me all these years. There were showers of sparks, from the dragon's mouth perhaps, and maybe fireworks, but I don't remember anything else.

I have looked for this many times with Google searches and on other message boards, and checked all the typical suggestions, but so far I haven't found it--unless maybe the book I remember was another edition of a book that was later published with different illustrations. I have certainly found out just HOW MANY dragon books for kids are out there!! :)

Diane (tapestrythreads) | 3 comments Oh my goodness! You made that look so easy. Yes, this has to be it. The Goodreads reviews and the 5-star reviews on Amazon show me how much others loved and remembered it too! https://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Who-Lik...

Thank you so much!! I can't believe I've looked for this so many times without success, going back probably 6-8 years, and decided to try "one more time." So you're my hero. :) Now I have to figure out how to get an affordable copy because currently $40 is too much. But I'll wait.

No matter how many times I googled "children's picture book 1970s dragon boy," it never came up, but now changing it to 1960s or even 1963 also doesn't bring it up. Since the book didn't seem old in 1977, I sure didn't suspect it was published in 1963.

May I ask how you knew about this book? There's no substitution for a human brain, that's for sure.

It was this evening that I decided to look again and came across this article, tried the first suggestion, then tried the second suggestion which is this group. So glad I didn't have to go further!

Rainbowheart | 28679 comments You're welcome, super glad to help out!

I actually found it on the Picture Books About Dragons list and figured that had to be it based on the color scheme.

Diane (tapestrythreads) | 3 comments And I just realized I misremembered the colors...there's no green. :) Oh well, the purple and orange is definitely memorable.

I just found out someone turned this into a musical...ha!
