Dusty (dustyrosereads) | 6 comments I remember bits and pieces and the overall plot, but no useful names.

A sorceress lives with only the menagerie of mythical creatures she has drawn to herself by knowing and taking their names (though they seem mostly okay with it?). I think there is a prince involved, a prince who comes and lives with her for a time under her care. She is obsessed with finding the name of some nightmarish creature that has only come at her most dire need to protect her a couple of times.

At some point the prince leaves and becomes a ruler and makes some request of her that she feels she can't or won't fulfill. She is also aware that her name is being magically discovered by some other sorcerer. Afraid that he will use her to wreak havoc, she gives all her pet mythical creatures back their names so they can go free.

The sorcerer who sniffed out her name draws her to him, and at the end the nightmarish creature saves her again. In that moment she understands its nature, and it becomes the most beautiful, glorious... swan-like thing?

That's all the detail I can remember, and some of it might be off. It's been a long time.

Eskana | 15 comments Sounds like "The Forgotten Beasts of Eld." A sorceress inherits the power from her father and calls legendary beasts to her and they live with her in isolation.
A prince asks for her help, and she refuses it- at first. But then she raises a child under her protection.
Then one day, SHE is called because her name is used by another magician. She calls on the name of a beast she has been calling, and it kills the magician and later turns out to be a beautiful swan.
