Middle school age fantasy/ MC is a boy who enters a door or portal into a different world that is very dark and contains magic. Helps man from world who hides in shadows and wears a trench coat and fedora type hat with task in order to save city from danger.

Okay I read this book in 8th grade (2011-2012) for a reading journal… I of course have no longer have any of my school work from back then and I know that there is 100% a second book because I read it after because I was so intrigued by the first and needed to know what happens. If memory serves me correctly it’s a decently long title not just a few words. I believe the covers had one being green and one being red. I’ve been searching endlessly all day with various descriptions in google and key words in Goodreads title search to no avail… if anyone has any inkling of this series please help!

A long shot, based on the red/green covers and the man wearing trenchcoat and hat, but the titles aren't long... Malice and Havoc by Chris Wooding?
