Tony Travis | 8 comments There are a lot of fine Dune books. If you want to stay wit that. Or if not try Foundation Series. Not sure where you are but I think reading the Dune Series in time order is a great read.

Steve Koyasako | 68 comments There are so many good books! For space opera, some good ones are John Scalzi's The Interdependency series, and Kate Elliott's Sun Chronicles, not to mention all the Murderbot novels and novellas by Martha Wells. For some exotic fantasy, you could try the Daevabad Trilogy by Shannon Chakraborty; and the Broken Earth series by N.K. Jemisin, all three of which won Hugo Awards.

Robert Robertson (trk06) | 52 comments The Foundation Isaac Asimov
I read it years ago and still go back to it .

message 18: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 19 comments If you liked Dune, The Witcher, and Game of thrones - all high fantasy-adjacent with a strong political undertone (yes, I know Dune is technically sci-fi, but still), I would definitely try The Mistborn Saga/The Stormlight Archive Series by Brandon Sanderson, pretty much anything by Robin Hobb (Assassin's Apprentice is a good place to start), and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

Joe (gherlone) | 2 comments have you read the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien) ?? those are epic fantasy, rather like the ones you named. if you'd like to try more hard scifi epics, someone suggested the Foundation books (Asimov) already, but I'd also say you might like The Expanse (James S.A. Corey). all of those are kind of on the grand epic model like Dune & GoT.

Lisa Goldstein | 125 comments I recommend the Neverending story by Michael Ende, more fantasy than Sci fi

message 25: by Nathaniel (last edited Mar 11, 2024 06:25PM) (new)

Nathaniel (nathaniel_) | 83 comments Brandon Sanderson is strong recommendation. Just finished listening to Mistborn, this weekend. I would recommend it. Listened to the first two Stormlight Archives books. Super long but they are rewarding in the end.

The Expanse is also a strong recommendation. Im working my way through them as well. Very very good science fiction.

For an off the beaten path, would recommend Gardens of the Moon, by Steven Erickson. Its based on a seriously involved Tabletop Role Playing Game campaign -probably D&D, but I don't remember - the author and his friends ran for years. Erickson might test your powers of concentration, there are a lot of characters.

Erickson's series is called Mazalan Book of the Fallen was published during the same time Martin was writing the first four books of Thrones.

If you want to ramp up your hard science fiction? Peter F Hamilton. Pandora's Star. Commonwealth Saga about an alien invasion.

message 31: by Ángel (new)

Ángel Javier | 7 comments «The princess bride» for fantasy. There's no better book in the genre. Also, anything by Moorcock. Pretty cool writer.

Sci-fi: anything by Philip K. Dick. Moorcock again («Dancers at the end of time» or «Behold the man»). «Book of Skulls», by Robert Silverberg. Anything by Alfred Bester, Fredric Brown, or Stanislaw Lem. And... «Dangerous visions». Brilliant anthology by some of the best sci-fi writers ever.

message 32: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Rae | 7 comments The War of Lost Hearts series by Carrisa Broadbent is really well written and unique it starts with Daughter of No Worlds. Throne of Glass series is amazing, but super long.

message 35: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Lockhart | 3 comments I have read all The Game of Throne books. Then I found I am Number Four and was delighted to read a three dozen more books in that series.(some small like pamphlets. ) I enjoyed all the Ender series and the four books starting with Divergent, I thought I was finished with sci-fi but read my favourite-Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I am not usually into sci-fi, but I got sucked in!!

I have listened to Veronica's trilogy starting with Divergent. They were so entertaining--I wanted to be there.

message 37: by Ali (new)

Ali Smith Pendragon is a really good sci-if/fantasy series with 10 books! In the simplest terms it has planet hopping and time hopping. The main character has a ring that allows him to find portals to save other worlds.

Also Divine Rivals is my current fantasy fav of the year. It’s giving studio ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle with maybe Princess Mononokee? Honestly I just really liked it because it was so visual. It has light moments of young romance but dark moments of the frontlines of war.

message 50: by Vítor (new)

Vítor Monteiro | 70 comments The classic anthology "Earthmen & Strangers" by Robert Silverberg. Still living author (89 now), once indulged answering me on email a little on this book, nice, helpful gent, give his book a try (given he is one of the lucky few writters who make a REAL good living out of his writing, not so much that he needs it a lot to eat, but again, real gent, he deserves all buys and reads of his stuff, written and collected).
