A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting
question
Do you think Kitty could have been happy if she’d settled for either Archie or Pemberton?

I think you have to consider what Kitty’s happiness was aside from her motives for marrying. She loved her family and her home, and she was hoping to secure wealth to secure her own familys happiness and her own by freeing herself from debt. I think with Archie she would had been happy, he seemed quite an easy character to mould into and not an obstacle in Kitty’s plan. Alternatively, I am not sure that Archie would have been happy with her. He seemed to be set and guided by his mother’s decisions and whilst I believe he would had happily moved to live with Kitty in Bennington, I think he would had missed home and eventually resented her for it. With Kitty, she wasn’t set on finding a love match, and I think she would be content to find someone as amicable and “normal” as Archie. With thoughts to Pemberton, I think Kitty was using him as a last resort and just out of respect for Radcliffe. She would had chose Archie for it would had been an easier match and more managable when considering Pemberton’s arrogance and rudeness which was only further continued from his family. I don’t think we were introduced to Pemberton enough to compare him to Archie, but from the description I don’t think Kitty could had been happy with a character as opinionated as Pemberton. She seemed a strong, autonomous character, and Pemberton appeared both Conservative and conservative in views. I don’t think their futures goals and decisions would had aligned, It appears that Lord Radcliffe provided a perfect mix of the two, which would not only regulate Kitty’s fluorescent ideas but also encourage her ambition and show great admiration for her nature.
