Barbara Michaels (RIP), one of two pennames of Barbara Mertz, drew me into gothic books as a teenager. I own all of her books and set to re-read most of them this year that I haven't reviewed yet.
When I growing up I didn't know what a gothic was and thought they were just nifty mysteries that were 'different.'
A lot of her books don't read like gothics though - they really just read as mysteries. Others, like The master of blacktower, is pure historical gothic.
She wrote mainly contemporary, although had a historical here and there.
