Does anyone feel like they're cheating by adding graphic novels to their yearly book count?

BookishDramas (sanjibkd) | 269 comments A book is a book by any name.
Novels, novellas, short stories, etc.
Reading some of the larger volumes is more tedious and time consuming than a novel of similar page count.
For the purpose of specific group challenges the standards are set separately.

Dee Turner | 17 comments I don't usually read graphic novels but I sometimes have to review them for a non-profit that buys books for schools, and those do go into my book count. I don't feel it's cheating when I have to do it. On the other hand, I very rarely push graphic novels in my reviews in the first place, as I don't think they promote literacy very well.

Moreover, I think the whole 'counting books' thing is ridiculous, although I do it because Goodreads/Amazon pushes it so hard. I could read 50 long, excellently drafted books and increase my knowledge and understanding of the world, or I could read 350 graphic novels about demon slayers, and so what??

I might have misinterpreted what you really wanted to say.
But I don't like how here you seem to imply that books are inherently more educational than graphic novels.

Solace Sylum | 2 comments A book is a book, including graphic novels and comic books (and poetry chap books, and illustrated stories, etc.). For some people, graphic novels and comic books are more accessible and / or engaging reading materials than other forms of text stories - same with audiobooks. Discriminating against story-telling forms is gate-keeping, and unnecessary.

Emma | 112 comments I don't really keep track of the books that I read, but of course graphic novels count! They may tap into different aspects of storytelling, particularly visual storytelling, but they are just as valuable in my opinion. Even manga, which has a reputation for being "for kids," can often contain some wonderful stories and gorgeous artwork. I recommend "Land of the Lustrous" (or Houseki no Kuni) as a particularly good example of this.

jayla (semi-inactive) why would i? they still counts as reading even if they are super short and more visual.

Seconding Land of the Lustrous! It's got more substance to it than a lot of books I've read, and the art is beautiful.

Lance | 48 comments no. books are books are books. and sometimes a graphic novel will have more story or plot than a book that isn't a graphic novel although it depends I'll go back to my statement books are books are books.

libby grace | 9 comments a book is a book lol

*mic drop*

message 19: by Alicia (new)

Alicia No. It might be cheating if you're only doing it to pad your numbers.

If you are genuinely interested in those novels, and you are tired of reading text heavy or long books, graphic novels may spark your love of reading again.

Steve | 23 comments If you mean 'goodreads' book count cheating, just don't add a read date or make the date a bygone year so it does not reflect in your count if it eases your conscience :P

A book is a book though. :D

I have 13 volumes of Berserk still to read, I will be counting them when I feel brave enough to make a start :P

Malissa (malissa1578) | 163 comments Not at all. To me, a book is a book. Some graphic novels are longer than some of the novels I read.
