Guy wakes up to a knock on his door

Many years ago I had a professor tell me about a book where a guy wakes up to a knock on his door and the entire book is what happens to this guy between waking up and and answering the door. The book ends when the main character answers the door. I've never read the book so I don't know anymore details than that. Please help me find this book.
