30.5 Truitt_T’s task: Match it Up!

I cannot even begin to guess how many episodes of the 1970s version of Match Game I watched as a kid. I loved Gene Rayburn and so many of the truly funny celebrity guests - Betty White, Charles Nelson Riley, Gary Burghoff, Richard Dawson, Fannie Flagg, Vicky Lawrence, Jack Klugman, Elaine Joyce, Jo Ann Pflugg, Mary Wickes, Dick Martin, Marcia Wallace - the list goes on and on. So in honor of the 1970s version of Match Game, here’s your task:

This is a two book task. MPG Childrens and Middle Grade books are not eligible (Match Game was a bit risqué.) Also, books that are MPG Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Read two books with an identical 4 or more letter word in the title or subtitle. The words must be identical - no plurals, possessives, or embedded words allowed. One of your chosen books MUST be Non-Fiction.

Examples:
An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us
The World According to Garp

Notes from a Small Island
The Island

Is That a Fish in Your Ear? Translation and the Meaning of Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying
Magic Bites

The total page count for the two books must be 450 pages or more.

Required: Note the common title word.

Truitt_T | 440 comments *****IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ*****

One of your two books MUST be nonfiction, preferably with a clear nonfiction (or related) MPG.

Thanks!

Perfect! I need to read Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love, too, so I hope it's good. And I love The Big Over Easy. I was hoping the combinations would be fun - yours is great!

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) So I've chosen these 2 books and I can choose between the 2 same words on both lol. Her Perfect Family & My Perfect Family. Either PERFECT or FAMILY lol.

Is that correct?

message 9: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 440 comments You’ve got the right idea about the matching title words (very cool to have two matches), but one of the books needs to be nonfiction, and I don’t see that either of your books is.

You may have to keep looking!

Tired eyes missed the Non Fiction part lol x

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Can I ask if The Perfect Freedom: Adeoti Monsumola Yinka be what we would class as Non Fiction or not?

Many thanks

Hmmm...this is a little hard for me to judge. It certainly sounds like nonfiction, but the phrase 'based on' is a bit confusing, if it's a biography. With no one haveing read or rated it, where are no shleves, or MPGs.

I may have to throw this one to the Mods.....

Robin P | 1609 comments Could you bold or put asterisks or something around the sentence that states NonFiction? I am not the most detail-oriented person and I missed that the first 2 times I read the task. I probably wouldn't have noticed except for other people questioning it. Thanks!

I see that Amazon has this marked in the "bestseller numbers as:
#32 in Boxing Biographies
#106 in Boxing (Kindle Store)
#148 in Boxer Biographies

I can't edit the first post because it's not mine, but I'll ask the Mods to add more emphasis than MUST in all caps.

I know it's easy to miss things!

Thanks for posting that - it certainly helps!

It's not so much that I don't think it's nonfiction so much as I'm not sure how far a Mod should have to look to make the determination when the task completion is posted. This is the first task I've created, so I'm not entirely certain how much leeway I have to approve something.

I'll get this figured out soon!

Oh, of course you weren’t the one who posted it! And no complaints, I think this is a great idea for a task. Congratulations on your first one!

Don't worry, I've changed the 2 books completely.

I've gone for the following: The Real Queen Charlotte by Catherine Curzon - Catherine Curzon NON FICTION & A Real Piece of Work - Chris Orcutt = I've used the word REAL xx

Thank you! The Mods were very patient with me during it's creation - the first verion was a bit more complicated, lol.

Switchboard Soldiers

I see the rule says no plurals, but I assumed it means I couldn't use "soldier" with "soldiers".

You are correct - 'no plurals' refers only to the idea that there are no exceptions to the common word being identical.

Soldiers - and your two books - work perfectly.

Melanie Schroer | 92 comments Hi there!
I'd like to read The Orchid Thief

My question: "The Orchid Thief" cover and listing on Amazon, etc. contain the following subtitle: "A True Story of Beauty and Obsession," but the GR title doesn't include the subtitle. Does the subtitle count for this task even if it's not listed on GR?
Thanks so much!

The Orchid Thief is a great book - excellent choice.

While the default edition that I linked to above doesn't use the subtitle, many of the other editions do: The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession; The Orchid Thief : A True Story of Beauty and Obsession, etc.

I think you'll be fine, but I'll double check.

Melanie -

The standard is that the edition you're reading has to meet the requirement. In this case, that means you can use the subtitle only if your edition is one of those for which it is included on GR.

It was suggested that it might be worth trying the 'Anyone With Librarian Status' thread in the General Help section. I don't know if adding the subtitle to a specific is possible, but it's worth trying.
