For a mother daughter relationship, I'm not sure if you like memoirs, but I'm glad my mom died was sooo good

For a book set in North Carolina, you could read either Where the Crawdads Sing or All the Missing Girls! There’s some controversy with the author of Crawdads but I read it before all of that and it is a pretty good book.
