message 26: by Ian (new)

Ian Houston | 33 comments Genre… title by author:

Strange… Engine Summer by John Crowley
African Futurism… Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
Sci-fi… Madness Season by CS Friedman
Fantasy… The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold
Mystery… S. by Doug Dorst and JJ Abrams
Horror… Nod by Adrian Barnes or The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
Cozy… A Psalm For The Wild Built by Becky Chambers. Not necessary to read the second book, but even if you do, these are short novellas and it won’t be much of an investment of time.
Memoir… Making It So by Patrick Stewart
Adventure… Into The River Lands by Nghi Vo … also a novella and a gateway to a world featured in multiple stories, but any one of them stands alone and they can be read in any order.

This is off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more I’ve enjoyed recently that are worth recommending.

message 27: by Ashley (new)

Ashley R | 61 comments Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Mystery about a world with infinite rooms.

Uninformed narrator and loads of reveals. I will admit that the first 100 pages are background and set-up. But around page 130, the action picks up.

message 38: by Henna_UwU (new)

Henna_UwU | 99 comments It honestly doesn't have a ton of focus on romance, but Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is very good.

Maybe a bit of a hot take, but I actually didn't like The House in the Cerulean Sea at all. I thought the characters felt really one-dimensional, especially the kids.

(No offense to anyone who likes it, of course :D)

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Reynolds | 10 comments Heartless by Marissa Meyer!!!! SOOOO GOOD! If you have read or watched Alice in Wonderland, then you will love this! It's essentially how the author pictured the queen of hearts origin story!

message 40: by Steve (new)

Steve Koyasako | 68 comments Klara and the Sun by Ishiguro is another good one-off. As for the The House in the Cerulean Sea, Klune's written a sequel, called Somewhere Beyond the Sea. I liked Sea a lot more than I liked Under the Whispering Door.

message 41: by Lucy (new)
