Maybe The Battle of the Bulge: Brothers Behind Enemy Lines by Suzanne Agnes? Though, it is probably too recent and seems to be based on a true story.

The book is called The Ghost Front by Frank Bonham. Originally published Jan 1968. I was searching for the title of the book to see if I could obtain a copy when my Google search showed your post. Very good book.

Two American twin brothers enlist in the Army in 1944, and they do so early because they figured, according to the papers, the war was going to be over soon and they're going to be drafted anyways. They are sent to France, and are separated at the start of the Battle of the Bulge.
The brothers know a little German due to a nanny they had growing up, one twin wears glasses.
They also encounter a truckload of German soldiers pretending to be American soldiers. Americans soldiers use questions about baseball to determine who's American and who is not.
At one point a small group is entrenching itself in a defensive position but have so few defenders that an aging soldier working for the Army's mail service is positioned to man a machine gun.
Story ends with the twins reuniting as one of them takes out a German position by pretending to be a German soldier.
