Riah Reads :D | 7 comments normally around ~100 pages (for a stand alone book), if I'm just not interested at all. If I have a little interest but it's boring in parts, I'll try to get through like 2/3. If it's a series, I'll try to get through at least the first book and 1/3-1/2 of the second.

luckykarmatx I will DNF at any time if I'm just not feeling it...Some books you just have to be in the right mindset to enjoy,

Luke Hannigan | 3 comments I wait about 2 years before I decide not to finish a book... 😬
I just have a completionism attitude..

message 54: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said that life is too short to waste it on boring books.

message 55: by Michael (new)

Michael Altena (gekopt) | 4 comments so far I finished the book. if it is a serie and I didn't like the book I won't read any others in the serie. like Hyperion. but otherwise I just keep going. and sometimes it surprises you. example being redshirts. where the beginning of just weird but then halfway it all comes together and it was a fun book

message 56: by Lizabeth (new)

Lizabeth | 18 comments 100 pages… Sometimes that seems too generous…

message 57: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments Same here. 100 pages at the most, anything else is a waste of time. If the author didn't manage to make the plot interesting by page 100, it's the author's loss, not mine.

message 58: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments If I'm in the middle of the book and it didn't convince me then I DNF

message 59: by Rozebudzz (new)

Rozebudzz | 2 comments A couple of chapters, sometimes not even that much. There are a lot of poorly written books out there. I won’t waste time on one that doesn’t capture my interest right away.

message 60: by REZZER (new)

REZZER | 44 comments I have a book on my shelf that's been there for 20 years. I'll get to it soon. Lol

message 61: by Lilith (new)

Lilith Jane | 45 comments Good Question! I give it about 50%.

When I'm over halfway through I feel like I just push myself to finish it but when I dislike it until the 30-40% mark and it doesn't seem to get better, I DNF it

message 62: by Krista (new)

Krista | 7 comments I normally know about 15% to 25% through the book if I will enjoy it or not. Some books I know after the first couple chapters, it just depends. I know what I like and what I don’t and books can sometimes tell me quickly other times it takes a little bit.

message 63: by Dee (last edited Feb 11, 2024 02:39PM) (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments I very rarely DNF a book, but when I do, I've almost always finished half. And at that point, why not just go all the way? Unless it's really cringe, or infantile beyond belief, wildly offensive politically, or consistently knocking me unconscious after a few pages...

If it's simply dense material and difficult for me, such as nonfiction science, I endure and hang in, even if I have to read just a few pages at a time.

message 64: by erindreads (new)

erindreads | 10 comments I don’t DNF I have to finish a book once I start it even if I don’t like it.

message 65: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1 comments I don’t think I ever DNF a book

message 66: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments The general librarian's rule of thumb is to give a book 5 chapters before you reject it. I just read this in an amazon.com reader's review of "A Place of Execution" by Val McDermid.

message 67: by cherrymay ☆ (new)

cherrymay ☆ (cherryfreckle) | 5 comments i haven't dnf a book so far, but i think out of pure stubbornness i never will haha. that's why i'm extra picky with the books i'm buying atm

message 68: by Anna (new)

Anna I usually make it about 20% in before I decide to DNF, but I also mentally differentiate if it’s a proper DNF (never going to pick up the book again) or like a soft DNF (I’ll come back to it, just not really in the mood for it). Hope that makes sense lol

message 69: by Victoria (new)

Victoria G | 9 comments I try to go for at least 50% but with some books it's been 20-30. I'm very stubborn and usually read the books till the end even if I don't like them so I try to give the books a proper chance.

Some books were not worth it though

Lauren (iniysa) | 149 comments 100 pages

message 71: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Surratt (zoesurratt) | 1 comments I decide if I want to finish after 2-4 chapters so I have a feel for the characters, setting, and start of the plot.

Madelyn (Maddie) (GFB) it depends

message 73: by ali (new)

ali | 76 comments It could be the first sentence for me if i get bored (unless I bought the book then I WILL read it). I just really don't like wasting my time rrading books I know i won't like lol

message 74: by paula (new)

paula kenneth | 0 comments i hardly hardly hardly ever dnf a book so I don't know but I been though 78% of a 'the cheat sheet' and i'm really surprised that I didn't dnf it yet.

message 75: by Kai's (new)

Kai's Darling | 660 comments I'd give it up to 68% before its gone

message 76: by Emma (new)

Emma Dissociates 🦋 | 13 comments Around the 50% mark I usually give up. If there is not plot or fleshed out characters by then it’s a NOPE

message 77: by Laura (new)

Laura Jane | 26 comments If I get to 100 pages and I don't care about anything or the characters, I ditch it. Life's too short to force yourself through books you find boring. That or the second the main female protagonist is revealed to be baby-obsessed or man-obsessed. Give women other stories.

message 78: by Surajat Debbie (new)

Surajat Debbie It depends. I can push through to about 50% if I’m struggling with the story and characters. But if the writing is just plain bad then I’m giving up after about 2 chapters!! I feel like bad stories could possibly get better but bad writing? There’s no getting through that.

message 79: by rheya (new)

rheya b I have like a 50 page rule, if I don't notice the 50 pages go by that means I enjoyed the book so far. If I notice myself counting the pages, that means I'm not enjoying the book whatsoever.

message 80: by T.A. (new)

T.A. Par | 48 comments Intresting question...depends on the book. Usually over 100 pages. I have given up after a chapter on a few occasions.

message 81: by Kashaf (new)

Kashaf (dr-kashaf-rizwan) | 14 comments first few chapters, maximum 13 or I just skim through it or read from the middle and the ending but those are the books I usually end up dropping. if it fails to impress me UpTo chapter 5 or 6 it's a no

ʚ manvi°•✮•° | 71 comments i try my best to continue reading untill it just completely gets off road for me, like if it just irritates me how the story's written and stuff then I finaly DNF it.

message 83: by Kie (new)

Kie (kie06) | 96 comments if I feel like I have to force myself to read the book, then that’s when I give up

message 84: by Matin (new)

Matin Payervan(Pyron) (payervanmatin) | 22 comments when I'm half way through the book and it seems there will not be coming any twists, I would DNF instantly

message 85: by Angelic Angel (new)

Angelic Angel | 14 comments When I feel like I’m about to dnf a book usually I just listen to the audiobook to help me finish it. Funny thing is that it usually always end up with me loving the book.

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments Angel wrote: "When I feel like I’m about to dnf a book usually I just listen to the audiobook to help me finish it. Funny thing is that it usually always end up with me loving the book."

LOL, I've done this as well, and sometimes the other way around. The last couple years I've got a lot into audiobooks simply because I can listen to them while I work and sometimes by the time I get home my eyes are so tired from looking at a computer screen all day that it makes it difficult to read so an audiobook is perfect. But then sometimes the audio narrator doesn't fit the role or their performance is lacking so I will switch to the physical book.

message 87: by Ashley (new)

Ashley R | 61 comments I physically can’t log a dnf. I just have to know what ending this author thinks will make sense. If it’s truly terrible, then I just got a kick out of it. It’s like watching a bad movie just to laugh at it.

☆° alimxx °☆ | 40 comments 25% at most then if I really want it to work out then I'll give a smidge longer but then if it's not working and I've fought tooth and nail for it to work then it doesnt deserve to be read by the likes of me xoxo

message 89: by Annie (new)

Annie Rose | 54 comments at least like 20/30 percent because i almost never dnf like i think i’ve only done it once or twice but i could just tell from early on that they weren’t something i’d enjoy

message 90: by Claudia :) (new)

Claudia :) (celaureads) | 46 comments 25-30% or when I have to force myself to continue reading the book

message 91: by quietpageturner (new)

quietpageturner | 21 comments About 25% on kindle or 100 pages in a physical book…why waste time reading a book I’m not interested in when there are so many better books out there? 🤷🏾‍♀️

message 92: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie Within the first chapter or two

message 93: by Amelia (new)

Amelia Ross-Vickery | 1 comments I used to have the rule ‘you start it you finish it’ then I read The Catcher in the Rye. I can’t find the words to convey how much I loathe that book, but sufficed to say it cured me of that particular mind set.
Now I DNF if:
- I put a book down and don’t think of it after.
- it’s a slog.
- always DNF if I get second hand embarrassment from the characters.
- throw book in bin INSTANTLY if a dog is harmed in anyway.
Exceptions to these rules:
- if they are part of a series that I’ve invested a lot of time and emotion too (I was so close to DNF’ing CC3. But SJM has my heart so I persevered.)

message 94: by Ineffable7980x (new)

Ineffable7980x | 47 comments It's the moment when I realize I am not enjoying myself, that I would rather do almost anything than pick up the book. Sometimes that is 50 pages, sometimes it's 100.

message 95: by Steve (new)

Steve Koyasako | 68 comments I usually finish, even if I don't like it, unless I've checked it out of the library and can't renew it.

message 96: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (iniysa) | 149 comments I attempt 100 pages. Sometimes I can't stand it and stop earlier.

message 97: by Bella (new)

Bella | 8 comments At least halfway through the book

message 98: by The_5ft_reader (new)

The_5ft_reader I'll give a book 2 chapters at most before I DNF life's to short and my TBR is too big lol

Bella(✨❤️Hopeful Romantic❤️✨) | 251 comments I just did a DNF literally 30 seconds ago. It was…🤮. I never, ever want to even THINK of that book again. 🤮🤮🤮😭. Not because of violence, not because of swearing, not because of it being dumb. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. I think I was less than 50 pages in. Never again.

message 100: by Ineffable7980x (new)

Ineffable7980x | 47 comments until I decide I'm no longer having fun with the book. that usually takes 50 to 100 pages
